Jake Johnson tries, fails to inspire the youth in Netflix's foul-mouthed Hoops trailer

Continuing to corner the market on angry, roughly-rendered mentors with potential hearts of gold, Jake Johnson is settling into his next animated role rather comfortably. Netflix released the trailer for Hoops, an adult animated comedy about a high school basketball coach who aims to turn his shoddy team around and get them to the “big leagues.” Johnson stars as Coach Ben Hopkins, who Netflix describes as “a pathetic, angry, foul-mouthed coach desperate to prove himself, but always looking for an easy way to get the job done. He’s shameless and selfish, and given the opportunity to do the right thing, he fails most of the time.”

In this short teaser, Hopkins can be seen making a half-hearted attempt to inspire his team with what should be an easy shot for a supposed professional. Not much happens outside of Hopkins inserting strings of profanities between missed shots, but we imagine it’s a decent enough slice of what to expect from the largely inept guide.

Along with a teaser, Netflix also revealed the rest of the cast and a premiere date. Starring alongside Johnson is Rob Riggle, Natasha Leggaro, Ron Funches, Cleo King, and A.D. Miles. Hoops premiers on Netflix August 21. In the meantime, check out the teaser below.

I strongly disagree with people who subscribe to the notion that all children’s animated shows look the same nowaways, the CALArts style as some call it – stupid and reductive. But. I now also strongly believe that nearly all current adult-aimed animation-comedies look the same, this feeling was only further deepened by watching the trailer for Hoops.
If this show, F is for Family, and Star Trek Lower Decks were put next to one another in a lineup, no one would be able to tell them apart.

The humor also seems to draw from the same stagnant well. It looks safe to drink from until you get bitten by mosquitoes carrying the Family Guy strain of malaria.

I just assumed they’ve been farming the animation out to the same few studios, and that’s been causing it all to look the same.

f as in family at least has some directorial flourishes, but yeah i can’t believe that everyone just decided that this is what cartoons have to look like now.i’d say rick and morty (alien character design/action scenes notwithstanding) is the same. everything is.

The Korean sweatshop animators are already swamped with all these “edgy” adult cartoons as it is.  You can’t expect them to draw them all differently.

I’m not sure I’ve personally seen people complain about children’s animation falling into the “CalArts style.” I mostly see that thrown about for all of the samey-looking adult animated shows. I’m told it’s mostly the showrunner’s fault, and the desire to make these shows look like multi-cam sitcoms.

I never thought I’d say this, but the swearing in that trailer sure seemed excessive. Why do I suddenly feel the need to clutch at pearls?

Honestly I watched this with the sound off. I think it made the final dunk in the gag pretty funny actually.

How do they only have one black kid in a show about a basketball team? What’s wrong these show creators. Get some diversity in there, Jesus. What is this the 1980 Boston Celtics?

  • allyoureggs55-av says:

Why does it look so ugly? It looks like had eye surgery, and while hopped up on medication was asked if they could recreate the Rick and Morty style and was like “oh yeah, I know how to draw that”

  • brickhardmeat-av says:

lol he’s a cartoon and he said the F word in front of kids! this is brilliant humor

  • fedexpope-av says:

Hold on a minute. A foul-mouthed…cartoon? Can they do that?

    Nah.

“What if an adult swore at children?”- a comedy writer who gets paid more than me

I miss Bojack Horseman but I accept that not all adult animated comedies can be a masterpiece. That said, if that trailer sets up the overall tone of HOOPS, this looks terrible.

    • luasdublin-av says:

Hang on , isn’t the the groupthink is that we’re all supposed to hate Bojack because Alison Brie was cast in it?

      • breb-av says:

Oh, right right. Fuck that show!

      • blurredwords-av says:

Wow, I hoped you stretched before that reach. Especially since we’re on the Av Club, a Gizmodo site that along with io9 gave Bojack NON-STOP praise during it’s entire run

      • gladys23-av says:

Oh man, I’m so behind on my groupthink workshops. Why do we hate Allison Brie now?

    • peon21-av says:

On the other hand, it takes a certain amount of craft to animate that many different and distinct missed shots in a row.

      • bcfred-av says:

The part at the end when the ball kind of gets away from him and he has to go collect it is spot-on when enduring a basketball humiliation.

    • frasier-crane-av says:

The voice acting from Johnson is a shitshow. It seems so stilted, like they used the very first time he’s seeing the dialogue, and it sounds like they recorded it in a bathroom via two cans and a string.
