Looks like James Corden is prepping for his post-Late Late Show career. The host tried something new on Thursday’s show, directing a low-budget, impromptu music video for pal Harry Styles’ song “Daylight” off his new album, Harry’s House.

With just three hours and $300 to complete the project, Corden and Styles resort to knocking on doors on a New York City street looking for a location. After striking out a few times (and one outright rejection), they happen to stumble on a group of girls who are all too eager to be part of the production. In fact, one room of their apartment is littered with One Direction and Styles memorabilia (Ungenerous to Harry stans, Corden snarks, “We need to hide all of this, because I’m worried you’re a psychopath.”)

The apartment’s residents are then put to work, chipping in as production assistants, prop masters, costumers, and even recruiting their friends as extras. (Knowing the shoestring budget, those girls were definitely underpaid!) Meanwhile, Corden begins to bring his vision to life–a vision that involves lots of confetti, a perhaps unnecessary green screen suit, and a Mick Jagger moment that’s a little awkward in light of recent comments.

“Is it too late to just do Carpool Karaoke?” Styles jokes at one point. But although this is Corden’s first time directing a music video (he actually shares a writing credit on the “Best Song Ever” video with Late Late Show producer and frequent 1D director Ben Winston), the end result is unsurprisingly warm, intimate, and fun.

It helps to have Styles’ blinding natural charm to fall back on–and that they accidentally discovered on one of Brooklyn’s loveliest, roomiest apartments. One might suspect the fix is in, but the girls insisted to Variety that the day was a true surprise: “If we knew [they were stopping by] we would’ve at least brushed our hair!”

Realized that if you put a gun to my head and asked me to name a Harry Styles or even a One Direction song I couldn’t give you one to save my life. Thanks to the music streaming services, podcasts, and cars with built in bluetooth I’ve been out of the loop on pop music for nearly a decade.

Being proud of your own ignorance and choosing to live in a bubble isn’t necessarily a good thing.

unless you apply it to this guy’s super bland work, and it’s just… fine

No , no given how bland this stuff is , having a crap filter is a good thing.

Lumping pop music in as one flavor is crazy dumb, it is persistently and objectively the most diverse “genre” of music and your art bands et al are aping it more than you’d care to realize lol.

Ooh!  Do “it’s just noise” next!  Then “back in my day”, etc.!

This. I was in a pretty insular punk/hip hop bubble for like ten years, then decided a fun new year’s resolution would be to listen to a new record every day (low-supervision desk job priveleges) and have largely forced myself to challenge myself with it.My top five artists this year are tracking to include Halsey and Carly Rae Jepsen. Turns out when you meet something in good faith and set aside the need for everything to be filet mignon, potato chips can be pretty fucking good.

A bubble? They don’t like shit pop music. Maybe that’s a level of discernment you don’t understand.

Unlike your other reply, I don’t think Harry Styles has really been vital music for most of his career, and ignoring boy bands as an adult really isn’t the worst crime against music. However, his newest album is quite groovy and worth a listen.

Two multi-millionaires shot a music video using children to provide unpaid labour, and that’s your takeaway?

    • bustertaco-av says:

I couldn’t name a Harry Styles or One Direction song, but I will say that the first time listening to Harry Styles sing was a nice surprise. The dude is good ass singer.

I know that One Direction song about how you don’t know you’re beautiful, but only because I have a 4 year old daughter and they did a Sesame Street appearance where they sang it about the letter U.  Don’t know that I’ve heard the original.

Treat People With Kindness is a decent song, but not as good as Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s outfit in the video.

Looks like everyone had fun and they made a cute video.

Now we watch as the comment section trashes everyone and everything about it, because on the internet, nobody is allowed to have nice things.

Corden’s obsession with Harry is so awkward. Dude, he doesn’t like you like that!

  • yesidrivea240-av says:

So, they basically copied the idea for Lil Dicky’s Save Dat Money music video…

  • docprof-av says:

    Ok thanks.

  • breadnmaters-av says:

The only music vids of his I have seen are all shot on beaches or he is running along some road or just hanging out in some other unidentified outdoor setting. Not much really going on.But this kind of slumming – for two very rich men – is insulting.
