While Everything Everywhere All At Once has returned to theaters following its whopping 11 Oscar nominations, fans of last year’s indie hit can also look forward to seeing its cast back together again on the small screen this spring. James Hong was just confirmed to be reuniting with his previous onscreen family members Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Stephanie Hsu in American Born Chinese.

Hong is not the only new addition to the Disney+ miniseries adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel. Ronny Chieng (The Daily Show), Jimmy O. Yang (80 For Brady), Leonard Wu (Alita: Battle Angel), Lisa Lu (Crazy Rich Asians), and Rosalie Chiang (Turning Red) have also been announced as additional guest stars, joining Poppy Liu (Hacks). Along with Yeoh and Quan, the main cast also includes Ben Wang (Chang Can Dunk), Yann Yan Yeo (Modern Love: Mumbai), Chin Han (Mortal Kombat), Daniel Wu (Into The Badlands), Sydney Taylor (Just Add Magic: Mystery City), and Jimmy Liu, a former Taekwondo champion.

American Born Chinese follows Jin Wang, a teenage boy who finds fitting in at school even more challenging when a new kid arrives from China. Soon, he has no choice but to confront his identity when he finds himself drawn into the world of Chinese mythology, featuring the Monkey King from Journey To The West. In a new teaser for the series, Jin walks through a school hallway that’s still smoldering from a supernatural battle and finds a lot more than books and gym shoes when he opens his locker.

I’m pretty sure that by now, Hong has the record for the most acting roles ever, with only John Carradine for serious competition.

I once heard that Samuel L. Jackson has a staggeringly high amount of film appearances but I’ve never looked at any real numbes.

According to an IMDB list and a Guinness page, it’s a Telegu actor named Brahmanandam. My personal guess was – if you account for all acting roles and not just screen roles – Frank Welker, but it looks like he’s a lowly second place on the list. James Hong is 10th place, but when you account for both number of credits and the notability of his roles, I’d argue he’s at the top of the list. Whenever his time comes, his obit needs to be an hours-long read.https://www.imdb.com/list/ls083889656/

Welder’s body of work is insane. Pretty much anytime you needed an animal sound in a movie for the last 30 years, he did it.Totally agree on your take with Hong. He’s been in a ton of things but he stands out because he almost always stands out.  Both his live action work and any voice acting work he does.

Sydney Taylor? Something something forced diversity! Can I get booked on Tucker’s show now?

As somebody who really enjoyed the original graphic novel, this doesn’t look good and the fact that they poached the Everything All At Once cast suggests that they are lacking in ideas and just grasping for something that worked, once.

I liked the book enough though it’s a little boggling how very little of it seems present from the teaser footage so far. The most provocative content with the cousin I assume there’s no chance in hell they could pull off. Nor the blond kid subplot? In the Chinese-adjacent sphere there have been pretty successful adaptations that ended up wildly veering off from the source material, whether Fresh Off the Boat or Crazy Rich Asians. It also almost seems like they want to do a semi-remake of The Forbidden Kingdom (leaning into Journey to the West stuff— which was somewhat in the original book) but without bogging it down with the poorly-received IP of a white kid doing it?

The Blank Check podcast made me hyper aware of weird billing— it’s interesting Ke Huy Quan gets top billing per this teaser? The initial press release made it sound like he was a wholly new character not in the book and I wouldn’t have assumed that to even be a regular. It’s funny they split Michelle Yeoh into as many drum beats as possible and how quickly they blazed their way through the names on the second screen. (But I assume the beats did also correspond to all the other names that were just there by the time the card switched?)

I know this is grim to say, or even think about, but I am going to be SO SAD when James Hong passes. He’s just been such a fixture in so many beloved movies, TV shows, games, etcetera for me. Just an iconic presence.

Who does Disney think they’re kidding by just buying the entire cast of this years Best Picture favourite? This is so cringy. I’m game for all of these actors getting more work but this is weird.

I’d rather they hire the entire cast and put them in more stuff than the other thing they do, which is just steal action and sets pieces from hit movies to reuse in their stuff. Although on second thought, I’d kinda would like to see how they justify Ant-Man needing to shove a butt plug up himself to use his powers in the next movie
