Jane Fonda took to social media today to announce that she’s been diagnosed with cancer, and, more specifically, non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Writing on her Instagram account, Fonda (who’s 84) expressed optimism about her prognosis, noting that this is “a very treatable cancer.”

Stating that she’s already begun chemotherapy, Fonda wrote that, “80% of people survive, so I feel very lucky.” Then, being, well, Jane Fonda, she pivoted the conversation to talking about the wider political ramifications of a moment like this, in terms of the American healthcare system:

I’m also lucky because I have health insurance and access to the best doctors and treatments. I realize, and it’s painful, that I am privileged in this. Almost every family in America has had to deal with cancer at one time or another and far too many don’t have access to the quality health care I am receiving and this is not right.

In addition to healthcare, Fonda also directed attention back toward her frequent and spirited efforts at climate activism, noting that “the midterms are looming,” and that “they are beyond consequential so you can count on me to be right there together with you.”

Fonda has remained a very prolific presence in Hollywood in recent years; her resumé remains as busy now as it was in the 1960s and ’70s, albeit with an increased focus on TV and voice work. Her most recent credits include, of course, her multi-year run on Netflix’s Grace And Frankie, opposite Lily Tomlin; she also had a starring role in the animated TV series Stoner Cats, and made a recent voice appearance in Apple TV+’s Luck, playing a magical dragon in the animated feature. Fonda’s upcoming credits include Paul Weitz’s Moving On, plus a sequel to her 2018 film Book Club.

Jane Fonda is a national treasure and I unequivocally swoon for her, but I have to star you for the Curb reference.

There are many different kinds of both, but in general Hodgkin’s lymphoma is cured more often than Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.Hard to know if this is “the good kind” of NHL unless she releases a path report, which I don’t anticipate.

      • curioussquid-av says:

I was about to say, I know people who have had both and I thought NHL was the “bad” one. But hopefully treatment has improved, this was years ago. And for a while it felt like Hodgkins was the go-to for TV shows where they wanted a character to get sick with something for a while but ultimately recover.

When my dad first got it 20 years ago, it was like a death sentence. Glad to say he’s still around today. His doctors have called him a miracle. You’re never really free of it, tho. It always comes back. That chemo is no joke.

    • masshysteria-av says:

Glad to hear it. My mom has been diagnosed with Hodgkins and non-Hodgkins lymphoma on three separate occasions. Thankfully, she’s been in remission for the past 8 years. The chemo routines were pretty harrowing and not improved by her having to argue with her insurance provider to cover the treatments while she was in the fucking chair getting the injections.

      • wrecksracer-av says:

It’s a constant battle with insurance, that’s for sure. My dad is now down to an experimental treatment (which has been working). Insurance wasn’t going to pay for it. The company doing the research wanted him to pay for it out of pocket. It was very expensive. My dad ended up saying “if you want to do research on me that will benefit you, you are going to pay for it.” Jeez! Make a 79 year old man play hardball.

My dad would be so happy that Hanoi Jane has the cancer. But he’s dead, and she’s not, so…I don’t know.
