An interactive episode of television not only has to maintain narrative momentum across multiple viewer-selected story beats, it has to keep its characters engaged, even when audiences are making up their minds. That’s “the art of the stall,” which—according to Jane Krakowski—is the best part of filming a choose-your-own adventure special. At Netflix’s virtual press junket for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy Vs. The Reverend, we got technical with Krakowski to find out how it all came together. The Tony-winning performer explained what makes the interactive experience, and revealed that the cast was given ample opportunity to riff when it came time to kill time. And, finally, with the Dixie Chicks putting out their long-awaited comeback album this year, we took a trip down memory lane with Krakowski to ask about her former music video co-stars.

Years ago (Ally McBeal days), I passed Jane Krakowski on the streets of London. I was in a slightly bad mood, but she had an infectious brightness just going down the sidewalk that I got a bit out of my funk, (or maybe I’m just a fame whore, so seeing a famous person did it for me — but not so much that I’d ever stop them). Anywho, I love her, she’s always fantastic.I also passed Jack McBrayer walking down the street. I think I confused him a little bit, because it was right by my college campus, and I thought he was in grad school with me, and gave him a “hey man” like we were buddies. Is was a couple of minutes later before I realized who he was.Which is my way of saying that I now need to stalk the rest of the 30 Rock cast so I can get a complete set.

Who is Bennett Godley? That name pops up on Krakowski’s screen.
