Jason Momoa isn’t very optimistic about his future as Aquaman

Momoa would like to keep playing the aquatic man, but it's not really up to him

The first Aquaman movie, starring Jason Momoa as the aquatic man himself, made over $1 billion and stands as the highest-grossing DC superhero movie ever. Despite that, and probably because of its close association with Zack Snyder’s… divisive Justice League movie, Aquaman failed to launch its own mini-franchise and is only now getting a sequel five years later—a sequel that nobody seems to really care about (maybe because of behind-the-scenes drama and controversies).

So, despite Momoa’s success as the character, it’s not super surprising that he doesn’t have a whole lot of confidence in Aquaman’s cinematic future. Speaking with ET Online, a cold and rained-on Momoa said that the future is “not looking too good” in terms of him playing Aquaman again after the release of Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom (coming to American theaters next week). He says that he doesn’t “necessarily want it to be the end,” but that it’s not “really, like, a choice” that he gets to make.

That choice is now in the hands of new DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, who Momoa concedes are trying to “start their own thing up” and may have their own plans that don’t involve him or Aquaman. But still, he’d love to be a part of what they’re doing, saying that Warner Bros. and DC are his “home.” Curiously, back in 2022, Momoa hyped up the arrival of the Gunn/Safran administration by saying that they were going to be making one of his dreams come true. We still don’t know what the heck that was about (Momoa’s Flash cameo?), but if it’s not something from The Lost Kingdom, and this is the last we see of Momoa in a DC movie, maybe we’ll never know.

The rumor of Gunn keeping Momoa but casting him as Lobo in the new universe makes so much sense.

    • nilus-av says:

That honestly would be spot on casting. I don’t think Gunn has any personal issues with anyone in the current DCEU but its clear the suits want to burn the current one down and start over, so throwing new roles to these people may be a nice way of saying “no hard feelings, wasn’t my call”I’d honestly love to see Cavil back as I think he is good when directed well. Ray Fisher seemed to get the shaft and deservers better.  Even Affleck could be cool in a different role in DC.  Just maybe lose Ezra and Gal’s phone numbers.

I’m sure we could all think of some other great examples, but the drop in quality from Wonder Woman to WW84 is something for the ages.

    • bassplayerconvention-av says:

Damn, that’s good. I was thinking Rob Zombie but maybe they could play brothers or cousins or something.
(I know Lobo’s supposed to be the last of his people— because he killed all the others— but maybe one of them was out running errands when Lobo was doing all the murdering.)

Kind of like the beginning of Three Days Of The Condor, where Robert Redford survives the operation that killed all of his office-mates because he was out getting sandwiches for everyone.

Here I was ready to type a whole comment about how Momoa could stay on as Aquaman because of his cameo in James Gunn’s Peacemaker and then you come along with this 24k gold idea.

Talk about being born to play a part…well, Ron Perlman was born to play Lobo, but he’s probably too old and I guess Jason Mamoa looks enough like him /shrug.

      • imnottalkinboutthelinen-av says:

Momoa would make a great Lobo, but the role he was born to play is Bruiser Brody. And I hope that the reason he wasn’t cast as Brody in Iron Claw is because he is working on a full-blown Bruiser Brody biopic.

    • xirathi-av says:

Holy shit that’s a good idea. Momoa ALREADY IS Lobo!

I dunno about this being the darkest timeline, but this is surely evidence we’re in the WTF timeline.

I wish they would keep him as Aquaman. I care more about his interpretation than literally any other version of Aquaman, animated or live-action.

    • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

      “any other version of Aquaman”
and what would they be exactly?

      • killa-k-av says:

Alan Ritchson on Smallville, Justin Hartley in the unaired Aquaman pilot, Matt Lanter in Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, Phil LaMarr on Young Justice (and in Injustice 2), Miguel Ferrer on Superman: The Animated Series, Scott Rummell on Justice League/Justice League Unlimited, and William Callaway on Super Friends. Even several writers’ interpretation of Aquaman in the source material – comic books – aren’t very interesting to me.One small correction: John DiMaggio’s Aquaman on Batman: The Brave and the Bold was pretty fuckin’ epic. They should have given that Aquaman his own spin-off show. Outrageous! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquaman_in_other_media

        I assume they’d be OUTRAGEOUS!

Obviously COVID had some effect, but it seems crazy that Aquaman made $1 billion, and then DC Warner Bros. somehow decide it was a good idea to do a bunch of other shit before making a sequel. If you loved Aquaman when you were 10, you’re 15 now, and have probably moved on to other things.I think Warner Bros. was just trying to ape the Marvel model. But, first of all, Marvel didn’t do that with the early MCU movies. When Iron-Man was a hit in 2008, we got a direct sequel two years later, before Marvel tried to do a bunch of crossovers or push other heroes. And, second of all, Marvel’s confidence that it can release sequels long after the original movie is being tested. How did it go for The Marvels? It seems like the better model is what Warner Bros did in 1989. When Batman was a huge hit, is it more plausible that the was audience telling you they were really eager to see a Flash movie, or that the audience telling was you they wanted another Batman movie?

Isn’t he like, the only really good thing about their DCU movies?

Considering how Mamoa would be the PERFECT actor to cast as Lobo:I don’t see how Mamoa has anything to worry about.
