Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek has been undergoing treatment for Stage 4 pancreatic cancer since earlier this year, and though it previously seemed like his cancer was “near remission,” Trebek revealed back in October that his chemotherapy treatments were making it harder and harder for him to continue hosting the show. Unsurprisingly, concerns about Trebek’s health have hung over every episode of the show since Trebek announced his diagnosis, and on today’s installment of the annual Tournament Of Champions, contestant Dhruv Gaur decided to blow his chance at answering the Final Jeopardy clue by offering a note of support for Trebek instead.
Reading “We love you Alex!” in place of an answer, Trebek became visibly choked up for a moment—though, ever the professional, Trebek did manage to add “that’s very kind, thank you” before continuing on with his regular hosting duties. On Twitter, as #WeLoveYouAlex began to trend, Gaur offered some more information about what made him decide to go for the emotional victory (if not the actual Jeopardy! victory), saying that Trebek had just informed the contestants that he was continuing his cancer treatments. Gaur said he couldn’t stop thinking about Trebek during the game, so when Final Jeopardy came and he didn’t immediately know the answer, he decided to write his note instead.
He also tweeted that the Tournament Of Champions players are working together to raise money to fight pancreatic cancer.

Nothing but love for Alex and this contestant.
*What is* nothing but love for Alex and this contestant.
What is nothing but love for Alex and this contestant *?*
Well, he didn’t have a chance at winning anyway since he was some $17,000 out of first place. Even if he knew the answer, he wasn’t winning unless his opponents both went big and lost. But when I watched that tonight, I teared up hearing Alex actually choke up. You can tell it took everything he had to power through it in order to remain professional.
The article title says “…sacrifices final round for sweet tribute..”. I would say this is true. He didn’t sacrifice a victory but he did forego his final answer to tribute. Way to shit on his gesture.
Youre an asshole.
Dude had been in and out of the red all night. I doubt he had any expectation of even knowing the Final. A sweet gesture nevertheless.
Showing that even in loss we can still find graciousness.
Greatest gameshow host ever. I genuinely wish him the best.
Who is Alex Trebek?
He’s—Oh, I see.
I’m sorry, that’s not acceptable, your answers must be in the form of a question.
Well done.
If you have to ask…?
No Who is on first.
Deep down its for the best that I never get on the show. I would forget to phrase it like that everytime.
i really thought it was just me who thought Alex was gonna cry. Just a great way to express love for what will, unfortunately likely, be the last Tournament of Champions for this host. (I know his contract is through 2022 or something crazy, but let’s be real. he’s in his late 70s and is in stage IV of one of the most ruthless cancers there are.)
I’m not sure there was a reason for you to say this.
Well feel free to not fucking read it.
It’s just that I’ve obviously already read it.
Class acts all around.
Jeopardy taught me a lot. #SaluteTrebek
I know Twitter videos are always a mess… but please, AV Club: Don’t use a cam recording when there’s a perfectly-decent direct rip available! You’re better than that 😄 Yashar has one of the better clips:https://twitter.com/yashar/status/1194066519233306624
It made the next guy who pulled out the old “What three people have never been in my kitchen?” answer feel like a real dick.
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
cheers ; )
What is “I’m not crying, YOU’RE crying”?
Gaur offered some more information about what made him decide to go for the emotional victory (if not the actual Jeopardy! victory) Ok, not to take away from what the guy did here; but let’s not act like that dude gave away his chance at winning. He was $12000 away from the guy who was in second place. If he’d had a chance to win, I’m sure he’d of gone for the correct answer. Instead, he knew that he was out of the game and decided to show some love to Trebek.
Clearly missing the point, dickhead!
No, I got the point and even mentioned it in my comment. I was pointing out how instead of just mentioning this nice thing a guy did, AV decided to fluff it up by trying to imply that he sacrificed a Jeopardy win to do it.
Clearly missing the point, dickhead!
No. Just typical bad writing in the article. He didn’t give up his chance at winning, he had no chance of winning. Doesn’t take away from the awesomeness of what he did, though.
Yeah, I’m sure if he had a chance at winning he could’ve still answered and then snuck in the note at the end. And I totally would’ve been on board if he answered correctly but Alex disqualified his answer because of the “We love you Alex” at the end.
You twist the story. You put facts in the story.
Sean Connery’s response
It’s gonna be hard to deal with him not hosting when the time comes. To a lesser extent- but same with Pat Sajak who just had a medical scare- though Vanna White will presumably take over.
The difference is that Pat Sajak is by all accounts(and well supported if you look at his twitter), quite a cunt.
Yeah, I do know politically he’s awful, I try to avoid his twitter that might ruin him further. Shatner’s is bad enough (and I imagine is ghostwritten by a 25 year old fanboy, allegedly someone named Paul Camuso but probably approved by the Shat)
The difference is that The Wheel of Fortune sucks, and Sajak is a trash human being.
Not having seen the answer, I thought, What! Half of all pancreatic cancer sufferers survive? And thought that was sweetly encouraging.Apparently, the other two were resounding to the actual Final Jeopardy clue.
Dammit Sam, what was the question?
