Jeremy Renner, who recently suffered “blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries” in a snow plow accident, is in “critical but stable condition” in the ICU recovering from surgery as of Monday night, according to a spokesperson for the actor. A source previously told CNN that Renner had so far required two surgeries for “extensive” injuries sustained in the accident.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to the outlet that at approximately 9 a.m. on Sunday, January 1, officials “responded to a traumatic injury near Mt. Rose Highway” in Reno, Nevada, where the actor has a home. “Upon arrival, Deputies coordinated with Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and REMSA Health to arrange for medical transport of Mr. Jeremy Renner via care flight to a local area hospital,” read a statement from the Sheriff’s Office. “Mr. Renner was the only involved party in the incident.”

Further details have not yet been released, though the Hawkeye star’s spokesperson previously referred to the event as a “weather related accident.” According to CNN, the Reno area received between 6 to 18 inches of snow (depending on elevation) during a storm on New Year’s Eve through New Year’s Day. Renner has shared videos of himself operating large snow plows on Instagram (saved under the “Holiday” Instagram highlight) as recently as a week ago, featuring the caption, “Nearly done with sledding hill for the kids.”

“Jeremy’s family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible doctors and nurses looking after him, Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue, Washoe County Sheriff, Reno City Mayor Hillary Schieve and the Carano and Murdock families,” said a representative for Renner in a statement. “They are also tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans.”

Update [1/3/23 1:45 pm]: Mark Ruffalo became the first Marvel costar to publicly share well-wishes for Renner, writing on his Instagram story (via People), “Prayers up for our brother @jeremyrenner on a full and speedy recovery. Please send healing goodness his way.”

Driving a snowplow is the strangest Hollywood flex I have heard in awhile.  Super low budget Harrison Ford.

Less to do with Hollywood than just age. This is a middle-aged man flex if I’ve ever seen one. Like when your uncle explains every single detail about the motor on his lawnmower. To impress you with, uh, torque, I guess? Blade speeds? Unclear. What is clear is that they know a lot about manly things. Which is the point.

or, you know, they’re educated intelligent men who also do home care and chores. Like, you know, The Greatest Generation or something. Also, not everyone just pays someone to dig out their yard. Some people- men, even women!- go out and plow or snowplow or shovel THEMSELVES.Like Jeremy Renner.

To me that prize goes to Travolta flying an airliner- a 737 I think. Why? Does he routinely transport 160 or so Scientologists around the country?

and to make it more weird, he wears an airline pilot’s uniform

Just following in the footsteps of L.Ron. “the Commodore” Hubbard….

John Travolta is a qualified and certified passenger airline pilot. Has flown Qantas passenger jets, I believe. There was definitely press here jn Australia about it.

To me that prize goes to Travolta flying an airliner- a 737 I think. It’s an even older 707:

    • milligna000-av says:

Yeah, how strange to want to be able to drive out of your garage and onto the roads

    • crankymessiah-av says:

Yeah, so bizarre for someone who is rich and lives in a snowy area to want to be able to clear their driveway.

    • BookonBob-av says:

He lives in an area that gets feet of snow on a regular basis.

    • ahildy9815-av says:

Everyone keeps saying “snowplow,” I believe this morning I read “snow cat” which makes more sense with the building a sledding hill.Double checked instagram, definitely a snow cat not a plow.

    • medacris-av says:

I hope I’m not “imagining a guy” here, but my brain immediately went to this:

Man who has never lived in an area that gets more than an inch of snow: Holy shit, enough snow to warrant a snowplow! Isn’t this wild?
Person who lives in a place where it regularly snows several feet every winter: Not particularly, no.

I am indifferent on Jeremy Renner as an actor and as a human being (I’ve really only seen him in Avengers movies, don’t know anything about him off camera), but I hope he is okay, as this sounds super painful— and a possible lawsuit, especially if the racecar driver who died today of a snowplow accident was using the same make/model.

A bit of clarification, Where Renner lives is up Mt. Rose, which is for all intents and purposes, Lake Tahoe. And Lake Tahoe got FAR more than 18 inches of snow during this last storm. We got more like 4-5 feet of snow, it is the fucking snowpocalypse out here. Wishing him the best

  • chandlerbinge-av says:

He should have just called Mr. Plow.

  • happyinparaguay-av says:

Relax, folks. That wasn’t blood. It was Jeremy Renner’s hot sauce.

  • franklinonfood-av says:

Having the Avengers make an appearance at his bedside will hit different this time out compared  to their previous visits.

  • ajvia12-av says:

Heroes don’t always wear capes (but sometimes they do and also shoot arrows and drive snow plows)

  • discojoe-av says:

Trading the MCU for the ICU? Bad choice!Jokes aside, hopefully he recovers well.

And now Ken Block died in a snowmobile accident. I guess snow vehicles have gone Maximum Overdrive on us because of climate change. We’re doomed.

  • yesidrivea240-av says:

I’m surprised you haven’t posted anything about Ken Block. I realize this is AV Club, and he was a race car driver, but Hoonigan is a media force like no other and his Youtube presence was far reaching.

    • nogelego-av says:

The lead singer of the band Low died and it wasn’t mentioned it here. I’m guessing they’re saving them up for an “84 Celebrity Deaths We Missed” slideshow.

  • wrecksracer-av says:

That’s not his real hair, right?

Now they call me… Three-finger Joe.

A couple of friends and I write and record movie riffs. We just did Hard Ticket to Hawaii, which features a guy in a forklift accidentally knocking over a crate with a mutated snake inside. So I sing a Shake Hands with Danger lyric. “Shake hands with danger/You could be just like Jake./If you don’t watch where you’re goin/You might free… a deadly snake.”

Just here to note this deck makes it sound like Ruffalo was injured, and then sent prayers to Renner. okbye

  • butterbattlepacifist-av says:

Just a couple zip codes away from me, so this has been a weird news story. Hopefully he had enough coke in his system to keep his heart active going into surgery

  • jodyjm13-av says:

After suffering “traumatic” injuries while plowing snow, Mark Ruffalo sent fellow Marvel star Jeremy Renner prayersI realize that proofreading is pretty much non-existent here, but this subhead has Mark Ruffalo as the injured Avenger actor.Seriously, at least spend a minute to send the headline and subhead to a coworker, just as a quick sanity check.

  • akabrownbear-av says:

Man…so much snark here. The descriptions of the injury sound truly awful, like injuries he could never fully recover from if he survives. And it sounds like he was just trying to help people out. Feel horrible for him.

  • cscurrie-av says:

best of health and full recovery. Take a few years off from any type of film or TV projects. Just heal and enjoy life.

  • carrercrytharis-av says:

I assume Scarlett Johansson has a Soul Stone now?(That sounds dangerous, glad he’s doing okay.)
