After Avengers star Jeremy Renner broke more than 30 bones, landing him in critical condition from a snow plow accident on New Year’s Day, new details from a Nevada sheriff’s report reveal that the actor was attempting to prevent the vehicle from hitting his adult nephew, reports CNN.

According to the incident report, Renner was using the snowplow to get his nephew’s car out from the snow. Issues began to arise when the snowcat vehicle’s parking brake wasn’t engaged, causing it to start sliding sideways off its track.

“The Pistenbully snow groomer began sliding causing Renner to exit the vehicle without setting the emergency brake,” reads the sheriff’s report obtained by CNN.

“Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, it is believed based on our mechanical inspection that the parking brake would keep the Pistenbully from moving forward,” continues the report. “When Renner attempted to stop or divert the Pistenbully to avoid injury to (his nephew), he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.”

Though the main conclusion of how Renner was crushed by the snowcat points towards the lack of a parking brake used, it is noted by CNN that the report also says the brake light in the vehicle “was not functioning.”

While Renner may have sustained some pretty severe injuries, the Hawkeye actor is lucky to be alive after being crushed by a 7-ton snow plow, undergoing multiple surgeries after the incident. Even as he recovers at home, Renner seems to have continued posting online (of course, not on the now-defunct Jeremy Renner app). Updating the public with Instagram photos of his physical therapy, Renner has also somehow had enough free time to push the second season of his Paramount+ series Mayor Of Kingstown.

“snow groomer”? Is that the best choice of words?

  • frenchtoast24-av says:

Sounds more like “Jeremy Renner *thought* he needed to save his Nephew”

    • apewhohathnoname-av says:

They are letting him safe face for doing something astronomically stupid and will affect him for the rest of his life.

  • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

well i see the bones of the term ‘snow groomer’ have already been picked clean.

  • arriffic-av says:

Well this is horrifying and could have been so much worse. I wonder how much risk there was to the nephew or whether it’s just one of those situations where you act on instinct and accidentally make things worse?

    • GreenN_Gold-av says:

Yeah, presumably the nephew was just fine (based on lack of any contrary reports) but it would’ve been a nice detail to add.

    • jodyjm13-av says:

I suspect mostly the latter, since we haven’t heard anything about the condition of the nephew despite the obvious fact that Renner failed to stop the PistenBully. Still, at least he had a good reason for his rash action.

    • sentinelT-av says:

100% made things worse.  To be clear, not pointing a finger at him, but this is the way a lot of people react in cases like this if they are untrained.  In the industry I’m in, exiting an uncontrolled vehicle only makes things worse, whether intended or not.  In the case of emergency when operating heavy equipment, first priority is absolutely to stop and secure the unit.  If you get out, no one else is doing that.  He’s very lucky.

      • Mount_Prion-av says:

To be fair, he’s only very lucky compared to people who make the wrong decision and get crushed by snowplows, which is generally a very unlucky group. This logic has been poached from George Orwell being shot in the throat and surviving.

It’s tough to tell without seeing the scene and the locations of the vehicles and people involved. Seeing as the nephew was fine and rendering aid to Renner after he was run over, it would appear that Renner might have instinctually overestimated the risk. It does appear that they were on a rather steep incline and thus the Pistenbully was rolling fairly fast, which would likely kick in Renner’s instinctive response even more so. I presume it was rolling fairly fast because not only did Renner get pulled under the track when he tried to climb on it, but it sounds like it ran him over fairly quickly and kept rolling down the incline it was on.I’ve worked around a lot of heavy equipment in my business and obviously rule number one is that the equipment is secured before the driver exits it. Whether that be as simple as a parking break or more complex chocking and stabilizing. Rule number two is that fails, due to oversight or mechanical failure, you just get the fuck out of the way. Yeah, there’s a good chance that runaway piece of equipment is going to cause some expensive headaches, but trying to climb onto a rolling piece of heavy equipment all too often ends with getting runover by it.

It might be that the risk was very high and that exiting the vehicle allowed Renner to warn the nephew, allowing the nephew the awareness required to take evasive action. It appears that, parking brake or not, the vehicle was already out of Renner’s complete control. Since the parking brake and primary brake act in the same way and if Renner’s use of the primary brake was not sufficient to stop the impending disaster, it may be unfair to suggest using the parking brake would have stopped that first problem. I suspect the initial problem would have been at least running the nephew down and might have been the threat of crushing him against the other vehicle or a tree, which would absolutely have been fatal.

As someone who’s had the impulse to address mechanical issues by shoving/pushing/pulling on things that shouldn’t be shoved/pushed/pulled, I’ve found instinct is a terrible guide.

  • legeagle-av says:

So why aren’t you giving coverage to the Peyton Hillis case, a man who saved his children from drowning in the OCEAN, an act of sacrifice which nearly killed him? There are many  heroes of great courage other than Woke Hollywood stars.

    • orangeblush-av says:

Because he is an ex athlete, not a celebrity and this is an entertainment blog site, not a news site. Are you trolling? The woke mention at the end makes me wonder.

    • roomiewithaview-av says:

There are many, I’m sure, but the AV Club is is a [checks] pop culture website, so being an actor or some such “show biz” person (“woke” or not), and not, say, a former professional athlete, is kinda a prerequisite for it “giving coverage” to a particular story. You seem to have discovered the Peyton Hillis story just fine without it being featured on the AV Club.

    • marksmaker-av says:

You may be looking for a site where the topic is sports & athletes.

    • mothkinja-av says:

      Are you lost?

    • yellowfoot-av says:

How stupid are his kids that they almost drowned in the ocean? They should have just swum back to shore.

    • thebutterthief-av says:

So why aren’t you acknowledging the Angel of Budapest, Angel Sanz Briz, a man whose improvised heroics saved more than 5,000 Hungarian Jews from deportation to Auschwitz? There are many heroes of great courage other than thick-necked football players.

    • awkwardbacon-av says:
    • dirtside-av says:

Yeah, what could possibly be the reason that an automotive website is doing a follow-up story about someone getting run over by a vehicle? I mean why would an automotive website even think about covering the mechanical and human error aspects of a crash involving a vehicle? Clearly, an automotive website should be covering the story of a football player saving his kids in a non-vehicle-related accident. Yes, I know Jalopnik reposted the story from AV club.

  • ryonious-av says:

First Anton Yelchin and now Jeremy Renner. Please people, make sure your vehicles are properly secured!

    • jellosalvationista-av says:

Anton’s Jeep had an interface with ambiguity issues (and insufficient safeguards) that was considered recall-worthy. Other, less famous people had problems with it. So, sure, both could have been averted by using the parking brake, but it’s highly complicated by circumstances—being judicious about the parking break in split-second panic as opposed to under circumstances where you thought you parked and the car didn’t alert to the contrary.

  • robert-moses-supposes-erroneously-av says:

Ezra Miller is behind this somehow, I know it.

  • dammitspaz-av says:

Mostly as an aside – has anyone watched Mayor of Kingstown? Thoughts?Had never heard of it until Season 2 came out and suddenly its all over my streaming stuff.

    • wearewithyougodspeedaquaboy-av says:

Its good. We’re most of the way through season 1. If you like Taylor Sheridan joints like Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, Tulsa King, etc. you’ll like it. Like his other works, it relies heavily on macho archetypes for all the male and female leads. It gets tiresome at times, but still a good ride.

    • pie-oh-pah-av says:

Agree with pretty much everything godspeed aquaboy said, plus, for me it was worth it just for some standout performances from Emma Laird, Nichole Galicia, Aiden Gillen, Tobi Bamtefa, Necar Zadegan, and Natasha Marc (who deserves to be a MUCH BIGGER deal after her appearances in this and The Good Lord Bird.)

    • erictan04-av says:

It’s good. Very violent. Created by Taylor Sheridan, who’s in charge of Yellowstone and all its spinoffs. If you like or don’t mind Sylvester Stallone, there’s also Tulsa King, also created by Sheridan, first season now ended.

    • dammitspaz-av says:

Replying to myself to address everyone who weighed in – thanks for the opinions.  Did not know it was a Sheridan thing – that explains why both it and Tulsa King just suddenly appeared.  He’s “tha hotness” right now.  Not sure I 100% understand that … But it least explains the sudden appearance of it everywhere all at once

  • coatituesday-av says:

I mean, I wasn’t there or anything, but — his nephew wasn’t injured, so maybe Renner did save him?

  • realgenericposter-av says:

If he had shot the snow groomer with a net arrow, that probably would’ve stopped it from sliding.

  • urkillingme-av says:

is it just me, or is there an insinuation that this is Renner’s fault? from what i just read, the plow was already sliding when he hopped out. if so, the parking break wasn’t going to fix anything.

parking brakes don’t stop sliding (especially when the sliding is sideways). they stop wheels/tracks from rolling.

  • etruwanonanon-av says:

when it’s reported as 30 bones broken, is it 30 bones all over his body or 30 bones in his hands or feet? I think one IG photo had him sitting up. I would assume he would be in a full body cast if it’s his whole body.

  • skc1701a-av says:

“Snow Groomer” sounds like a name from Black Dynamite like TastyFreeze, CreamCorn and Basehead.

  • minniewigles-av says:

Sorry he got hurt, but macho behavior like this can be to blame. Be sure you know what you’re doing w/heavy equipment. If it’s defective, sue them, But you can’t stop it, be aware of that.

  • bhlam-22-av says:

I wonder if this negates his asshole behavior in the past, at least for other people.

  • badkarbon-av says:

“Save”? I “save” so many pedestrians and other motorists every time I’m driving a vehicle too yet I get so little praise, unless I’m misinterpreting middle fingers.

  • rockhard69-av says:

So Renner was trying to avoid being charged with involuntary manslaughter? Some superhero

  • anders221-av says:

Now we just need a Gizmodo article spinning on how this actually somehow makes him a really shitty person.C’mon. Do it.You can do it. The circle will be incomplete unless you do it.

  • JohnnyWasASchoolBoy-av says:

“The Pistenbully snow groomer began sliding causing Renner to exit the vehicle without setting the emergency brake,” That seems like someone got their words mixed up. Shouldn’t that read “Renner didn’t set the emergency break before he exited the vehicle, causing the Pistenbully snow groomer to slide.”?Renner had operated the vehicle before. If it had started sliding while he was in it, he would’ve stepped on the brake.
