Duke students walk out of Jerry Seinfeld’s commencement speech

Jerry Seinfeld’s commencement speech at Duke became the subject of something much larger than post-grad career advice this past weekend. As the comedian took the podium, a group of students walked out of the university’s stadium holding flags and chanting “Free, free Palestine.” Seinfeld began his speech (“Thank you. Oh my God, what a beautiful day,” he opened) as the last of the protesters exited (via The New York Times).
This particular protest echoed the goals espoused by other campus movements at Columbia and more that have gained momentum over the past month. “Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not rest,” the students chanted before joining relatives and faculty members for a makeshift graduation outside of the stadium’s walls.
Still, they were also protesting Seinfeld’s presence specifically. The comedian has voiced his support for Israel multiple times since October 7, through social media posts and a trip to Caliber 3, a “Counter Terror, Defense & Security Training Academy” in Israel run by active members of the IDF. His wife, Jessica Seinfeld, also recently donated to and promoted a pro-Israeli counterprotest at UCLA that ended in violent attacks on a student encampment earlier this month. (She did condemn the violence in a subsequent post.)
Seinfeld did not directly address the protest in his speech (which you can watch in full here), but did touch on the culture of political correctness in comedy he’s been ragging on recently. “I totally admire the ambitions of your generation to create a more just and inclusive society. I think it is also wonderful that you care so much about not hurting other people’s feelings in the million and one ways we all do that every second of every day,” he said. “It’s lovely to want to fix those things, but—all caps, but—what I need to tell you as a comedian, do not lose your sense of humor. You can have no idea at this point in your life how much you’re going to need it to get through.” He also addressed his Jewish heritage: “I grew up a Jewish boy from New York. That is a privilege if you want to be a comedian.”

I have been to a Duke graduation and it is a multi-part event. The part shown here is in the college stadium with every student graduating (undergrads, veterinarians, M.D.s, everything) listening to a few speeches. When this bloviating is over, there is a break when students go to designated parts of campus for much smaller sessions where they walk and get their diplomas.
This walkout is a performance. The students are not abandoning their graduation.
All protest is, in some sense, a performance. What a weird and unnecessary observation.

Not to mention, all graduation ceremonies are a performance.

I live in a red AF town, students still protested at the local university (that I actually attended as a student).
Isn’t it well known that most large universities have a large school-wide ceremony as well as numerous smaller ones for the respective schools and institutions within the university system? The article is clear – students walked out of Seinfeld’s commencement speech, as a means of protest and generating attention for their cause, it doesn’t assert that they somehow aren’t graduating now. Knowing this… isn’t your comment performance?
That’s how 90% of graduations work, but unless you followed each of them to their smaller session, it’s hard to know what they as individuals did or didn’t do. It also was pretty clearly a specific protest against Seinfeld who likes to cosplay as an IDF soldier.

There is basically a 1:1 correlation between comics who complain about how the woke younger generation is ruining comedy and comics whose material doesn’t resonate with people under 35 anymore.
But that’s not saying anything. Whether you agree with Seinfield and the like or with the kids who don’t like his comedy, both think that’s what’s happening. The issue is whether it is just natural changes in taste in comedy that change everything else — clothes, music, etc. or if it is ideological.
The debate isn’t really over ideology vs. taste. It’s “is the problem with me or them?” There is a subtle but gargantuan difference between asking “Why don’t the kids today appreciate comedy?” and “Why don’t the kids today appreciate MY comedy?” Guys like Seinfeld assume the issue is the first one when it’s virtually always the second, as his suggestion that a whole generation is at risk of losing their sense of humor implies. I remember back at the height of the TV show’s popularity, Jerry released a stand-up special, so I thought I’d give it a shot. See if his actual comedy was funny. Give the guy a go.
And I distinctly remember it made me smile twice. Not laugh. Just smile.
I then tried reading his book and couldn’t finish it. He’s just not my taste direction.
