To date, the casting on NBC’s Law & Order revival has been a calculated mixture of the old and the new. On the one hand, you’ve got Anthony Anderson and Sam Waterston returning to a series that was long synonymous with, well, one of their careers. (Not to throw shade on Anderson, but two seasons and some change just can’t stack up against the legendary tenure of DA Jack McCoy.) Meanwhile, the series is also set to inject some new blood into its roster (albeit new blood who often appeared on old Law & Orders), in the form of Hugh Dancy, Odelya Halevi, Jeffrey Donovan, and Camryn Manheim.

But what about all those other detectives and D.A.s that filtered through the series over the years, eventually felled by contract negotiations or lack of on-screen chemistry or, possibly, because they were a lesbian? What, specifically, of Jesse L. Martin’s Ed Green, one of the longest-tenured detectives in the show’s history?

Well, if you ask Martin—as The Talk did earlier this week—he’d let you know that he’d be completely game to reprise the role. “I couldn’t possibly say. I certainly hope so,” Deadline reports Martin responded when asked about a possible return. “There were a lot of loose ends when Ed Green left the scene, if you will. Yes, maybe.”

(Deadline also reports that NBC declined to comment, and quoted a source close to production that said there were no plans to bring Martin back at present.)

Martin has, of course, been perfectly busy in the years since he left Law & Order in 2008. Most notably, he continues to co-star on The Flash on The CW.

As for Ed Green, well…he left the force at the same time Martin left the show, after being involved in an office-involved-shooting, and also an episode of Andy Barker, P.I. (Those two facts aren’t related, we just think it’s weird that NBC loaned Martin out to Andy Barker.) So who knows where he’s at these days?

I would say that it would be hard to bring Green back as a full fledged detective given how they wrote him out, but SVU had one of their ADAs full on disbarred and still brought her back as a prosecutor, so who knows.
If they do bring him back as a regular, I wonder if it will be as a court investigator, which the franchise usually shuffles responsibilities to the ADA for.

I remember when Dick Wolf was going to do a whole show from that perspective, but then I think it died quickly.

Briscoe was one in Trial by Jury, but Orbach died after Episode 2, and the series was cancelled after Season 2.
They were going to make a spinoff focusing on defense attorneys, but they apparently scrapped that and are working on something else.

Maybe he can get Barry to fuck with the timeline again and Detective Green will suddenly have his job again…

As much as I love Joe, it is okay if he takes a break from The Flash. It gives Cecile more to do for one thing

I didn’t realize Waterston was coming back. That was probably the only thing that would get me to check out the new seasons of this show. I guess I will check them out now. It would be nice if they did bring back Green, too, to bring them closer to the heydey of the show.

As probably the only person that actually liked Elisabeth Rohm, I hope that we get justice for Serena’s departure!

    Chris Noth is available!

Exiled 2! Logan is sent back to Staten Island after punching a Peloton executive following his twin brother’s untimely death.

Well he could come back as a perp. Ripped from the headlines…yeah its more of an SVU thing but how about a crossover with new L&O. If you make Noth part of some shady organized “rapey” crime syndicate and you can bring in L&O: Stabler. Then have something tie back to Chicago and you can bring in the whole One Chicago franchise. Finally, add some federal charges and then bring in the FBI crew. I know. Different network but Dick Wolf can do whatever the hell he wants. I want a Dick Wolf Universe. The DCU would be awesome.

Well unlike Anderson, Martin doesn’t have multiple sexual assault allegations made against him, so you would think that would be enough to sway the needle in his direction. Maybe in some other world, I guess.

What in the world?  I hadn’t heard that about Anderson.  I tell you what.  Men sure do make men look bad.

The Hustle & Flow one was big news at the time for a celebrity of Anderson’s stature. It’s almost impressive how thoroughly his people have been able to bury it.

Hey, don’t forget about Dylan McDermott – I know he’s (apparently) leaving Organized Crime to do another Dick Wolf show, but I find it really odd that he and Anderson got hired to begin with (given that SVU is all about bringing rapists to justice). Hell, it’s strange that they brought Noth back for Criminal Intent – I know it was before the main allegations had come out (and even before at least one of the rapes took place), but he was known to be an abusive asshole even during his tenure on the original L&O.(I am absolutely down for bringing back other characters from the show, though.

Bring Green back and pair him up with the bastard love child of Lenny Briscoe conceived while he was on some drunken bender from back in the day. Lenny Jr makes an opening scene quip over some dead body and Green shakes his head and says “Man. You are just like your father”

  • electricsheep198-av says:

They let Det. Logan back after he was pushed out in disgrace, so Green might as well come back too. But really I’d like to see Jeremy Sisto back. I would NOT like to see Alana de la Garza back. I enjoyed the last couple of seasons but her character was the worst, just so fucking sanctimonious and this is petty but she never wore suit jackets to court. No lawyer goes to court in cardigans!! On top of that she was a remarkably bad actor since her days on CSI: Miami, and do you know how bad your acting has to be to stand out as bad on CSI: Miami?

    • shotmyheartandiwishiwasntok-av says:

Sisto and Garza are too busy on FBI for anything other than a cameo.

      • electricsheep198-av says:

Well I’m glad Sisto found steady work, and I guess good for de la Garza for somehow suckering someone else into giving her a role.
