John Goodman is currently serving as president of the fiction jury at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival (our boy is officially fancy, America), and he apparently took the prestigious gig as an opportunity to drop a dozen or so interesting opinions on the topic of television (via Variety). These aren’t necessarily spicy “go off, king” opinions, but if you’ve ever been curious about where Goodman stands on things, here you go.

The most notable of his proclamations, probably, is that Goodman has no regrets about speaking up in defense of Roseanne Barr after she was fired from the Roseanne reboot over a racist Tweet (one that she had said at the time was caused by tweeting while on Ambien), but he also says that he “felt bad for her” at the time since everyone was “just attacking” her. That all being said, Goodman won’t really commit to answering whether or not he’d work with her again: “I don’t know. If she’d liked to… I just don’t know. I miss her.” He also added, “I wish her well.”

Goodman also discussed some other old collaborators, specifically Joel and Ethan Coen (Goodman appeared in a bunch of their films, including The Big Lebowski and Inside Llewyn Davis, before the duo went their separate ways), and he seems similarly unconvinced about ever working with them again—and not because they don’t even work with each other anymore. He says they always got a long because he and the brothers were “Midwestern transplants to New York,” and he has nothing but nice to say about their writing and their sense of humor. However, he says it’s been “so long” since he’s seen them that he thinks his “tickets have run out on the Coen brothers.” (But, again, they don’t even make movies with each other anymore.)

Back to TV, Goodman has spent his time in Monaco watching TV shows from all over the world, and he says foreign TV is generally “very good,” but he quipped that there isn’t much of a difference between American TV and international TV these days anyway, since “both sides have mandatory fucking now.” (Funny, but the TV shows that he’s on don’t really have sex scenes, do they?)

Speaking of the shows he’s on, Goodman (rightfully) highlighted how good The Righteous Gemstones is, partially because he gets to be a straight man opposite all of his significantly zanier co-stars, so he just gets to “sit back and watch a free show.” He’s really just living it up and having a great time. Good(man) for him.

I empathize with Rosanne and Goodman’s feelings for her that span decades. Rosanne and people with her views are seriously fucked up. We are as a people subjected to the mass delusions and paranoia of the MAGATs. When Trump is gone, the shit he has been at the forefront of is still going to be a danger to civilization. This is not hyperbole. These people are a Nazi level threat. Their movement promises authoritarian misery the likes we have never seen. When they are soundly defeated and removed far from the reins of power, we can discuss rehabilitation. That includes Rosanne. Until then, she and her fellow lunatics can STFU.

He’s going to be a danger for a very long time. He is the embodiment of the contemporary fascist, but he didn’t bring it; he’s just the spokesman and lead shit-stirrer. I’m not in any way convinced that they’ll be soundly defeated and it makes me sick to say it. The corporatocracy is firmly in place, creating a new kind of feudalismIt’s time to rebel and we have to start with nationalized healthcare. My doctor called in a simiple antibiotic but the pharmacy wasn’t taking my insurance. A$10.00 script was $200.00 so I had to go elseway. People are tied to jobs they despise and working for psychopaths they can’t escape. Sorry for the rant. All of those right to lifers don’t seem to think anyone really has a right to be healthy enough to live

Your healthcare “system” is one of the singularly most fucked things on the planet. That thing boggles my mind. Worst, there are cunts in other countries who want to emulate it.

        • breadnmaters-av says:

I don’t pray but I’ll hope those c*nts don’t succeed. Hopefully the systems already in place can dig in deeper and refuse to concede. You can look at any fb page and see thousands upon thousands of commenters complaining – and sharing horror stories, and yet we do nothing. We have become complacent and defeated. Even “good” insurance has gone to shit.

My mum went through breast cancer (she’s fine, it’s the drowning that’s gonna get her), did some googling looking for those who’d been through it and came across a bunch of Americans taking out second mortgages and selling cars to pay for their treatment.I think, at the end of the day, she was out like $900. That was mostly just discretionary spending (like having to deal with staying with her daughter-in-law during treatment), and travel. Once, in Brisbane, I ran into a Seppo backpacker at the Paddo Tavern, as you do, who had an arm in cast. Huge grin on his face. Fresh plaster, still crisp, still white. Working visa. Said he broke it on some stares, went to a public hospital, got it set and patched, and they sent him down to pay.“Unfortunately,” the lady says, “you’re not a citizen. You’ll have to pay the full costs.” And he was panicking, thought that was his trip over. This was going to ruin him. The lady at the payment desk says: “That will be…$400.”He laughed, whipped out the plastic, and that’s why he was having a drink.

Do you guys have to pay for general anesthesia? I had to fork up $1400 for it and that was AFTER my health insurance paid 40% of the original total. As if using it for surgery was a fucking indulgence.

Every day I kick myself for not leaving this country when I was young and smart enough to learn another language. After people go through all of their money they end up broke and on medicaid. You get treatment but then….this country needs to implode already. We’ve returned to the Middle Age where a few people own everything and the rest of us have to rely on the ‘churches’ – donations, go fund me, and churches.

I hope he works with one or both of the Coen Bros again. They seem to bring out the best in each other. He and Tony Shalhoub in different ways fit their world perfectly. They can deliver that heightened artificial dialogue but make it seem natural for their characters.

Broadly, yes you are right; but more specifically it’s Sam Barsanti who is the very model of an idiotically bad writer.

    • breadnmaters-av says:

Yeah, it sounds dumb; dumber than the Mills, anyway. My generation didn’t have wildly dumb phrases, just obsessively repetitive expressive words (awesome). And people in my gen didn’t use the word “like” the way they do now – which is annoying af. When GenZ-ers do it around me I just act like I’m too cool to care, when really I just don’t care. It’s usually not in a professional setting so it’s just the usual young-people code language that doesn’t concern me anyway. Kids always have to establish their own language so they can make everyone else feel excluded for a change, and I’m sure I’m not saying anything you don’t already know, I’m just high on benedryl and melatonin….

      • richardalinnii-av says:

I’m a 43-year-old white male, and my thinking about slang is this: every generation has their own slang, and I (mostly) get this generation’s slang through context anyway, so I don’t complain about it. However, I do my best to not use it, because a lot of it comes from Black culture, and I don’t want to use AAVE. Not because I don’t respect it, but because I respect it too much to try to reduce it to a tool for social cachet.

Were people “just attacking [Roseanne]”, Johnny? Or were they reacting to horrible things she’d said?

    • fanburner-av says:

She’s a woman existing in public. I 100% believe a lot of people took the opportunity to criticize her appearance, her weight, and anything else they could use to tear her down. Roseanne said shitty things and ought never to work again, but I can see if Goodman primarily saw people trashing her for things outside of that, especially things she’s been trashed about before, it would look to him more like an attack than righteous outrage for her awful words and terrible beliefs. Men like Mel Gibson say shitty things and they get movie deals. Women who say shitty things get rape threats (including the old “you’re too ugly to rape” rape threat).

      • cuzned-av says:

This is a good point. She’s been the subject of… unconstructive personal comments… for basically her entire professional life. And i’ve no doubt that an unfortunate percentage of responses to the racist tweet that finally ended her TV career were themselves also horrible. When people are shouting such things at someone you care about, it can be hard to hear the valid criticisms over the… unconstructive personal comments. Years later, though? He’s surely had time to cast a sober eye on her extracurricular oeuvre, and how its toxicity has actually increased.

  • luckysharp7-av says:

Did you know: Goodman refused to let his character Dan be a Trump fan on the Roseanne reboot. So Roseanne had to do it with her character. She didn’t want to because its like too much like her irl, so she was hoping Goodman would be the Trump fan.So he wouldn’t even pretend to like Trump for money. Very professional “actor”.

  • jrcorwin-av says:

I think that Roseanne is a trailblazing icon who had incredible talent at her peak. I think that Roseanne has long suffered from substantial mental health crises that have likely been untreated, mistreated or undertreated at various times. I think that Roseanne has some deplorable opinions/views on some issues. I think I can think all of these things at once.

  • kmfdm781-av says:

I miss Roseanne too. I watched her show when I was a kid endlessly. Her household and the lower/middle class-nes of the show really resonated with me and my life. I was disheartened to see her become a publicly hateful person, then absolve herself from responsibility by claiming Ambien made her do it. Seems like the social tide turned in 2016 when “he who shall not be named” was made president, where it became acceptable for some people and some groups to be out and open with their hate. How consequences don’t happen or don’t matter. How honor, integrity and decorum slipped further into the past. I struggle watching people I thought I knew become something else and whether they are evil people deep down or what. People I respected, who I thought were intelligent people. Part of me wants to forgive and move on because some of these people I miss, but part of me thinks this is the exit strategy of a rhetoric no longer popular among despicable people and now they want to stumble back home and make up. Part of me thinks if MAGA demagoguery was still in full force, they would still be gloating and making it that much worse for everyone else, not crawling back for forgiveness and scared the bridges they burned are still wrecked. When the liars, the fascists, the Nazis, the jan6ers, the cheaters, the molesters, the covid deniers and the absolute scum came to town and your first thought was “Hell yeah! let’s hear them out! They have good points about (insert people I hate)”, then fuck you. Sit and chew on what you did for a while.
