The Alfred Hitchcock of our time, Jordan Peele, shared a cryptic teaser for his next feature film. Based on the poster he shared on Twitter this morning, the only details offered so far are: the title is NOPE, and it will star Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Euphoria’s Barbie Ferreira, and The OA’s Brandon Perea. Also, it has something to do with a spooky-looking cloud.

“Nope” is the most appropriate response to a looming, billowy cloud with a flag banner floating beneath it like a kite string. It’s what you wish every horror film protagonist would say instead of walking down that dark hallway. There’s no telling what awaits the people of the small city below that ominous cloud, but Peele promises “a new terror.”

After garnering success in the comedic spheres throughout his career, Peele continues to carve out an influential space in horror, becoming the first Black writer to win the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for his first film, Get Out in 2018. Get Out became an instant success, carrying over into Us, which Peele wrote. His production company, MonkeyPaw, helped bring HBO’s hit supernatural horror series Lovecraft Country to life, as well as the forthcoming Candyman adaptation, which Peele wrote with Nia DaCosta. He also helmed the reboot of The Twilight Zone.

This will be Kaluuya’s second lead role in a Peele-led production, following Get Out. Since starring in Peele’s directorial debut, Kaluuya’s starred in Black Panther, Queen & Slim, and the Oscar-nominated Judas And The Black Messiah, for which he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Yeun has had a stellar year himself, snatching a nomination for Best Actor for his role in A24's Minari, becoming the first Asian-American Best Actor nominee in Academy Award history.

Rumors sparked earlier this year that Palmer may be the lead villain in NOPE, but only time will tell if this is true. Over the last few years she’s starred in horror series Scream Queens and Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers, and has a lead voice role in Disney’s forthcoming Proud Family revival.

NOPE is set to premiere July 22, 2022.

The man has made one terrific movie that just happened to capture the cultural zeitgeist and one mediocre movie that was far too heavy handed with it’s message over substance storytelling. He’s put his name on a few projects we’ve yet to see come to fruition.  Calling him the Alfred Hitchcock of our time is a gross over-exaggeration.

    • signeduptoyellatyou-av says:

You have to start from the assumption that most AVC writers have no idea how Peele might be similar or different from Hitchcock other than “horror(?) movies?”. They just make the comparison because to them it signifies the status and cultural cachet they believe Peele has.

      • p33p0le-av says:

Reducing Hitchcock’s legacy to a cultural footnote of ignorant reference in the process, yes.

  • oldmanschultz-av says:

The Alfred Hitchcock of our timeNope. I don’t believe there is a clear precedent for Jordan Peele and this comparison is doing him a disservice. The Twilight Zone, which has been renewed for a second season.Yeah you could say that is has been renewed. You might even say that it already aired, last year to be precise, if you wanna be all current about it.

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

yeah, i don’t remember hitchcock’s sketch comedy work.

    • prognosis-negative-av says:

You think this comparison is a disservice to…Jordan Peele?

      • light-emitting-diode-av says:

Constantly comparing filmmakers and actors to historic ones is a dumb practice that needs to stop, even when it’s supposed to be “praise”. It’s reductive on its own when it’s valid (when comparing art), but comparing people almost always ends up setting high expectations that will never be met due to confirmation bias.

      • south-of-heaven-av says:

He was genuinely funny as the host of Alfred Hitchcock Presents

    • adammcgwire-av says:

I don’t know why bloggers like this can’t just let the man have a nice career without burdening him with unnecessary hyperbole. He’s made two movies. One was great and one was a frustrating mess that showed flashes of brilliance, but didn’t gel. He’s not comparable to anyone as of yet. After two films it’s more of an M Night trajectory. Just let the guy do his thing without the breathless hype.

    • doctor-boo3-av says:

If you want to be really current you could note that it’s already aired its second season AND been cancelled. (Cancelled may not be entirely fair as Peele says they’d told all the stories they wanted to tell and wanted to stop after two seasons but yeah, it’s all done)

      • oldmanschultz-av says:

Aw man, I didn’t even know about that! Guess I wasn’t as hip and cool and current as I thought. Then again, I do not write for this site, and I don’t even get paid to write these comments, and at least I was more up to speed than the actual writer of this article.
        Forgive me please?

Is Elaine May kind of analogous? Starting off in comedy (albeit improv) and in front of camera stuff to writing and directing? Taika Waititi seems kind of similar too but happened afterward. Albert Brooks maybe?I’m not familiar enough with early SNL to know who pivoted towards writing/directing from the earlier years. In recent history though I can’t really think of anyone who had a really solid career then took such a hard turn into a new genre and formed such as clear and mainstream recognizable identity. (Donald Glover-ish? Did he direct Guava Island?)

      • teageegeepea-av says:

        May’s movies weren’t as successful.

      • kjordan3742-av says:

John C. Reilly started off doing prestige dramas and pivoted hard to comedy, but he’s always getting laughs regardless. I can’t think of anyone really matching Peele’s pivot from a creator/director perspective at all.

    • recognitions-av says:

Also, Peele doesn’t have a reputation for bullying his leading actresses that I know of.

    • megixt-av says:

Jordan Peele is the Jordan Peele of our time. I love, love, love Hitchcock’s work but can we give some one else an chance to set a new standard? I won’t live long enough to hear the press boost up a new hot shot director as “The New Jordan Peele” 30 years from now!

    • nycpaul-av says:

I also remember when M. Night Shyamalan was the new Alfred Hitchcock. This is like the “new Dylan” thing they used to push on talented songwriters in the Seventies. Peele is making very unique horror films. He’s just him. That should be enough.

  • slydante-av says:

I would give all the money in the world if this turned out to somehow be a collaboration with Edgar Wright. I mean, it’s a new Jordan Peele film with a cast like this that already has me intrigued anyway, so it was already getting my money, but I’m just saying that I saw this, & my mind immediately went to Don’t.

    • endymion421-av says:

Same here! I’m glad other people thought the same thing as well. Wright and Peele are two of my favorite current directors, so a collaboration between them would be awesome.

  • nothem-av says:

It’s about to be rainin’ used cars on that town.

  • bassclefstef-av says:

I’ll pencil this one onto the calendar.

  • anathanoffillions-av says:

Am I missing where it mentions Kaluuya actually won the oscar this year?I thought Us was uneven but still definitely looking forward to this. The world doesn’t need more of Shyamalan-like ego but it does need more idiosyncratic directors with $$$ to make what they want to make.Looking forward to the teaser poster campaign, just like a hint of something in the picture and above the title “JUST…” “SO MUCH” “AND I’M LIKE…” or above and below “THAT’S A” [TITLE] “FROM ME”

    • teageegeepea-av says:

Yes, you are missing that part:
Kaluuya’s starred in Black Panther, Queen & Slim, and the Oscar-nominated Judas And The Black Messiah, for which he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor

      • anathanoffillions-av says:

That’s what we call a dirty edit, my good chap :)it’s actually really nice to see an edit here, I know the typos never get edited

        • teageegeepea-av says:

Yeah, I wouldn’t expect the AV Club to note their errors. Correcting any at all is a small victory

          • onlyheretosaythis-av says:

There’s a writer here who consistently uses “climatic” when they mean “climactic.” I pointed it out in their most recent review, and that if you searched the word “climatic” you could find every instance of the misuse so it clearly wasn’t a typo. They deleted my comment, edited the one review where I pointed this out, and left the rest unchanged.

  • fronzel-neekburm-av says:

Just getting out ahead for headline writers:You COULD do the “Just say ‘Nope’ to Peele’s newest” or “Just say ‘Yup” to Nope” or you could be creative. Just… just putting that out there.

  • sophomore--slump-av says:

    ALL HAIL THE GLOW CLOUD

  • endymion421-av says:

“Nope” the name of that film reminds me of that Grindhouse fake trailer by Edgar Wright, “Don’t”

  • noisetanknick-av says:

    Finally:But feature length!

  • gruesome-twosome-av says:

That’s…a goofy-ass title, but I’m interested in whatever movies Peele makes. Get Out was great of course, though Us kinda fell off the rails in the last act.

  • thegobhoblin-av says:

Looking forward to the direct-to-streaming knockoff Nah.

  • cura-te-ipsum-av says:
    • endymion421-av says:

Haha I thought the same thing. I remember seeing Grindhouse in theaters when I was 17 and that was my favorite trailer. Took me a lot longer to learn Edgar Wright directed it!

    • morbidmatt73-av says:

Matthew MacFadyen sighting! I forgot about this trailer. Great stuff.

  • teageegeepea-av says:

Peele should have won Best Director instead.

  • recognitions69-av says:

Always down for more Jordan Peele horror.  Except The Twilight Zone.  Let’s pretend that never happened.

  • diabolik7-av says:

Very aggressive titles. Get Out. Nope. What’s next? Bugger Off?

  • refinedbean-av says:

    Was US good?NOPE!
Really?! Get Out!Someone turn this comment into something funnier, I’m tired. I disliked Us but I respect the fact that, hey, at least it was different enough to engage for a while. Looking forward to NOPE.
