UPDATE, April 6: Kanye West is officially off the Coachella lineup. Now, The Weeknd and Swedish House Mafia will have a joint headlining set on Sunday, April 17. This news comes from Variety.

Kanye West was supposed to headline Coachella this year alongside Harry Styles and Billie Eilish, but in a predictable move, he decided to drop out of the festival at the last minute. Travis Scott was also supposed to be a surprise guest during West’s set, and it would’ve marked his first public performance since the Astroworld tragedy.

TMZ first broke the news, and an unnamed source also told Variety that the rapper had not rehearsed or prepared for his Coachella performance.

No specific reason was given for West’s decision not to play Coachella, but this news comes a month after West threatened to drop out of the fest if Eilish was allowed to perform.

At one of her shows, Eilish helped a fan who was struggling to breathe, made sure they got an inhaler, and told the crowd, “We’re taking care of our people, hold on. I wait for people to be OK until I keep going.” West had perceived that act of kindness as a slight against Travis Scott who kept the Astroworld set going amid mass casualties in the crowd.

In a now-deleted Instagram post, West wrote, “Come on Billie, we love you. Please apologize to Trav and to the families of the people who lost their lives. No one intended this to happen. Trav didn’t have any idea of what was happening when he was on stage and was very hurt by what happened and yes Trav will be with me at Coachella but now I need Billie to apologize before I perform.”

Eilish commented in a reply to West’s Instagram post, writing, “Literally never said a thing about Travis. Was just helping a fan.”

West recently deactivated his Instagram and is inactive on Twitter, so he hasn’t commented on dropping off from Coachella’s lineup. The festival also has yet to announce who will replace West as the new headliner.

Why can’t Kanye go into the west?

I guess he was sick of Will Smith and Chris Rock getting all the attention, or maybe he just genuinely forgot about the performance.  Either way, whatevs.  Have to think Coachella has a backup planned already.

Hopefully their backup plan isn’t Death Grips or Morrissey.

people forget about Amy Winehouse, I had tickets the night she was gonna headline, I was really there for Portishead , Amy was an added bonus. then it turned out her Visa was denied so she couldn’t headline anymore. For a while Portishead got the headlining spot until a week before they got Prince to headline, which , well we all know how amazing that turned out… .but yeah what other act can they pull now to replace Kanye?  a Talking Heads reunion?? (its not happening obviously)… anywho rantings from an old man here.

We tend to forget the bad stuff about people we like after they’re dead. We probably shouldn’t, but we do, nontheles.

At this point, if you’re a concert promoter that is still booking Kanye and counting on him to be anything but unreliable, the consequences are kind of on you.

It’s like buying tickets to a Lauryn Hill or Morrissey show and expecting it to start on time, if at all. Unlikely.

Well, I’m definitely not going now.Wait… I was already definitely not going before, so the net effect of West’s latest little man-baby temper tantrum is ZERO.Yawn.

Is it really last minute if he announced it weeks ago? There was no chance Billie was going to play his dumb games, so nobody should be surprised by this.

Man can’t bully young woman to do what he wants, throws tantrum, takes ball, goes home.

It’s hard to tell with Kanye’s ‘eccentricities’, however it sounds like he was never going to perform and used this as an excuse.

I understand the Fresh Prince is reviving his career with a surprise Coachella headlining set.

(monotone voice) Oh no. Come back Kanye. We all love you. We want you to perform. Don’t go.

An old joke but: did you know House Mafia is Swedish for douchebag?

I hear that there’s a prominent former high ranking government official that has a social media platform that he’d be happy to unload for the right price. Maybe this is Kanye’s chance to control his Truth?

  • KingKangNYC-av says:

Can we start calling Kanye “Uncle Baby Bully”?

  • brianfowler713-av says:

I thought the Swedish House Mafia were done, defunct. But then again, people have been saying the real mafia in NYC was on it’s way out for 5 decades, so this isn’t that surprising.

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

Phew! Thank heavens we got that sorted out.
