Sure, Apple TV+ has Fraggle Rock and HBO Max has Elmo, but Disney+ isn’t quaking in its boots, not with the Muppets to help them weather this puppet renaissance. Next month, the streamer will launch Muppets Now, an “unscripted” series that finds the gang mingling with a host of different celebrities. It’s the first use of Jim Henson’s characters since ABC axed its 2016 mockumentary series, The Muppets.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the six-episode show follows Scooter as he readies the gang for each chaotic episode. Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Bunsen, Beaker, and even Pepé the King Prawn are on hand in the below clip, which also teases celebrity appearances from Seth Rogen, RuPaul, Aubrey Plaza, and many more.

From a press release:

Overflowing with spontaneous lunacy, surprising guest stars and more frogs, pigs, bears (and whatevers) than legally allowed, the Muppets cut loose in Muppets Now with the kind of startling silliness and chaotic fun that made them famous. From zany experiments with Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker to lifestyle tips from the fabulous Miss Piggy, each episode is packed with hilarious segments, hosted by the Muppets showcasing what the Muppets do best.

Check it out below, and say hi to a fuzzy lawyer we can only assume is the white-collar brother of Emmet Otter.

Muppets Now will begin streaming July 31 on Disney+.

Looks like fun! Can’t wait! Even though it is odd these were advertised as shorts at first, and now they’re calling it a normal TV show.

Pretty sure it is still just shorts and they’re just not saying that. They did the same thing with Pixar in Real Life, too.

      • marshalgrover-av says:

From what I heard, they originally had like 18-or-so shorts running under 10 minutes each. Now they’ve announced six episodes, so they’re taking those shorts and stitching them into a half-hour variety format.

Okay, after looking around a bit, I think you’re probably right. There seems to be a bit of conflicting info, but it seems more likely than not. (Up until you said that, I had thought it was just six 10-minute episodes.)

Well, I didn’t really expect Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes to be available …… but former San Francisco D.A George Gascón has no excuse.

Still not a fan of that Kermit voice. Seeing people on the internet who are better at sounding like Kermit the Frog makes me think they could’ve done better.

I actually thought Brian Henson did a pretty fair job in Muppet Christmas Carol and was a bit disappointed he didn’t do it more.

      • marshalgrover-av says:

Can’t tell if you’re being facetious or not, but that wasn’t Brian Henson; that was Steve Whitmire.

        • ceallach66-av says:

No, I wasn’t being facetious, I had always thought Brian Henson voiced him in that movie – huh. My mistake then!

    • ospoesandbohs-av says:

Agree, it’s in “wrong sounding Muppets” territory.

I think Matt Vogel is an amazing puppeteer- which is much of the job, after all – but he just doesn’t sound like Kermit. They should have given the role to Peter Linz, whose Ernie sounds a lot like Ernie (and Ernie, of course, sounds a lot like Kermit)

  • happyinparaguay-av says:

Really wish they’d do something more experimental with The Muppets again, like The Jim Henson Hour. These new shows just seem like they’re made for nostalgic purposes.

    • xaa922-av says:

I thought the mockumentary format had a lot of potential, but they flubbed it with bad writing.  It just wasn’t very funny.

      • marshalgrover-av says:

I loved the humor; I think the execution of the premise is what didn’t work. Had it been more about the backstage nonsense, it would’ve been fine. “Kermit thinks Fozzie’s girlfriend is cheating at bar trivia” is the kind of thing that didn’t work.

        • anthonystrand-av says:

Oh man, remember the one where the Muppets all come to work hungover and don’t do anything funny? HILARIOUS!

      • erikveland-av says:

After the retooling half way through it was very funny. Shame they lost so much goodwill with the first half.

  • kukluxklam3-av says:

I’ll watch if they MeToo Miss Piggy. Kermit has been in a hostile work environment since the 1970’s. I will also watch if they bring back the Muppet News segments similar to what they had on Sesemy street. .

I TELL people I subscribed for the Mandalorian… but these are the real goods.
