After months of speculation that Charlie Cox’s Daredevil would find a second life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel boss Kevin Feige has confirmed it’s true. The Marvel Studios president spilled the news about Cox’s Murdock will be joining the MCU in an interview with CinemaBlend.

“If you were to see Daredevil in upcoming things, Charlie Cox, yes, would be the actor playing Daredevil,” he said. “Where we see that, how we see that, when we see that, remains to be seen.”

Cox played Matt Murdock in the Netflix series Daredevil from 2015 to 2018, when the show was canceled. Netflix ultimately pulled the plug on all its Marvel shows, and Marvel decided to produce its own series directly for Disney+. The Daredevil rights reverted back to Marvel from Netflix at the end of 2020.

Feige hasn’t said whether this means other characters from Daredevil will also be coming into the MCU proper as well. That includes Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page, Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson, and of course Vincent D’Onofrio’s terrifying Wilson Fisk, a.k.a Kingpin.

Fans have speculated for months that both Daredevil and Kingpin would be seen in the MCU soon. Charlie Cox was reportedly sighted on the set of Spiderman: No Way Home (which will hit theaters in less than two weeks). D’Onofrio stirred up fans when he tweeted the Hawkeye trailer back in November.

His character Fisk has some obvious connections to that series. In the most recent Hawkeye episode, fans met Echo, a deaf fighter who was first introduced in the comics as Fisk’s adopted daughter who tries to take down Daredevil. The episode also gave some major hints that Fisk is behind the scenes of the “tracksuit mafia” that is chasing down Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld).

Marvel already announced plans for Echo to get her own Disney+ spin-off, which would be the perfect chance to incorporate more Daredevil characters into the MCU at large. It’s not clear if the MCU will consider the plot of the Netflix series canon, or if they’ll opt to give the Daredevil and co. new backstories. Feige’s announcement also opens the door for characters from other Netflix shows, like the Peabody award-winning Jessica Jones, to crossover too.

For his part, Charlie Cox previously expressed hesitancy to return to his Daredevil roots. In an interview with SiriusXM’s Jessica Shaw in October, the actor said, “You’ve got to be careful what you wish for. You come back and it’s not as good or it doesn’t quite work or it’s too much time has passed. It doesn’t quite come together in the same way. You don’t want to taint what you’ve already got.”

In the most recent Hawkeye episode, fans met Echo, a deaf fighter who was first introduced in the comics as Fisk’s adopted daughter who tries to take down Daredevil. Than she had sex with Matt and, like many other romantic partners Matt has had, was murdered. But don’t worry she got better. But the moral of the story is that Matt Murdoch’s penis is cursed…

    • devilbunnies3-av says:

Better at sex or better from being murdered? #askingforafriend #askingforanotherfriendwhoisinnowayanecrophiliac

That’s a weird knife if it can cut a person but not go through their clothes.

      • gargsy-av says:

Yeah, it’s almost as if the force it takes to drive a knife through someone’s chest diminishes the amount of damage it can do once it has gone through the person’s chest.

      • mshep-av says:

Nah. Clothing is lighter, less inert, more flexible than flesh. Tenting like that would make perfect sense. (I am not, myself, a trained assassin or serial killer, I promise.)

      • sarcastro7-av says:

I’m more interested in how those clothes make Echo – who is certainly extremely physically fit, but come on – look like she stole her upper body from The Hulk.

      • lectroid-av says:

That has long been a Frank Miller trope. I dunno if that particular panel is Miller (it doesn’t look ugly enough), but you can see that thing all through his Daredevil, various Batmans (Batmen?), Wolverine, etc.
Now that I think of it, I wonder if it was a way to show ‘this guy got run through’ without showing actual blood/penetration, in deference to the Comics Code…

      • weedlord420-av says:

It’s seemingly a special property of Elektra’s sai as it’s specifically been used that way numerous times (as of course a visual homage/callback to the first time that happened, when Elektra herself was killed).

        • laserface1242-av says:

To be fair, Elektra was wearing a one piece and a thong. I’d assume the Ronin armor is more padded than that.

    • shandrakor-av says:

…and then she became The Phoenix.Comics are weird.

Is that Elektra? She got thicc.

It’s a subpar(John Romita Jr.) artist trying to ape the style of another subpar artist(Frank Miller)

Miller drew? I thought he was just a writer

          • uselessbeauty1987-av says:

Yes he drew his own Daredevil run (inked by the excellent Klaus Janson who also inked Miller on Dark Knight Returns).Say what you will about Miller today, but his Daredevil run was excellent, both in art and writing. Genuinely brilliant.

          • kitschkat-av says:

Miller actually started in comics as an artist, and he drew a lot of his own stuff – he drew all of Sin City, and The Dark Knight Returns. Unfortunately, he also drew The Dark Knight Strikes Again, which is one of the ugliest comics I’ve personally wasted time on.

Then Bendis killed Echo again in his Moon Knight. Why’d he hate his pal David Mack’s creation so much?Elektra’s sai is penetrating the Ronin tunic, chest armor, undershirt, Echo’s torso, & out the other side. That is one spectacularly unprotective outfit! Plus Elektra’s arm would be elbow-deep in gore pushing it through.

  • robert-denby-av says:

This is excellent news. Now all we need is to get Mike Colter and Krysten Ritter back on board.

    • soylent-gr33n-av says:

      And Jessica Henwick!

      • ghostiet-av says:

Interestingly, Henwick turned down a role in Shang-Chi and it’s unclear if she was meant to play someone else or reprise Colleen Wing.

        • gatorlokishorns-av says:

I’ve heard that she was supposed to be in the fight club scenes instead of the Extermis guy, if she still had the Iron Fist the power set would’ve been fairly similar visually. So she basically traded a cameo that’ll be there later if she wants it for a more prominent role in the Matrix.

        • simonc1138-av says:

I feel like she would’ve been offered the role of Xialing (Shang Chi’s sister), I don’t see her in the Awkwafina/Katy role. And there wasn’t a lot of room for additional characters to come in.

    • mid-boss-av says:

And to keep Finn Jones away.

      • crackblind-av says:

Hey, if he sticks with Luke and they go the Heroes for Hire route, I’d be down with that. The brief scenes of just the two of them from season 2 of Luke Cage finally nailed Danny’s character.

        • bigal6ft6-av says:

I think Jones’ Rand worked in sidekick mode/being smack talked about. Lead not so much but he’s a decent glowy-fist punching buddy, the Luke Cage Heroes for hire episode was the best he was on the Netflix series. And I kinda liked how they cast him as the dopey one in Defenders.

    • angelicwildman-av says:

But Colter reported awhile ago that he wasn’t into repeating. I don’t know if it was tied to Finn Jones probably being replaced as Iron Fist or not. Of course Daredevil being an attorney can show up in various areas including series like She-Hulk. Jessica Jones private investigator job also can come into play.

    • themantisrapture-av says:

Am I the only one who thought Mike Colter was boring as fuck as Luke Cage? Zero swagger. Dude could just about pull off walking forwards in a hoodie.

    • peon21-av says:

If we’re on a wishing spree, can I have Rob Morgan back as Turk?

  • smittywerbenjagermanjensen22-av says:

Happy for Matt and Kingpin to presumably be back in the mix. Would really be happy to start hearing buzz about the return of Jessica Jones

    • yttruim-av says:

there have been small rumblings of Jesica/Hogarth being in She-Hulk. Similar to the small rumblings around Daredevil being in SM:NWH when it was early in production. If Fisk and DD show up this week or next with Hawkeye and SM:NWH then i would say that chances get into the high likely hood that the She-Hulk news is correct.

      • Ken-Moromisato-av says:

        sounds amazing

      • briliantmisstake-av says:

Hogarth seems more likely than Jones (although I’d love more Ritter/Jones) although who know how available Moss has been given the Matrix movie. I’m sure it will never happen but it would also be fun to see Hellcat return as part of whatever team-up Valentina Allegra is cooking up.

      • bigal6ft6-av says:

I’ve been really enjoying Hawkeye but I would have no problem if the last 3 episodes Matt showed up and the show just suddenly turned into Daredevil with Kate and Clint buying Christmas presents in the background.

        • amaltheaelanor-av says:

Just to clarify, is Daredevil the one running around in the background, or are Hawkeye and Kate?

          • bigal6ft6-av says:

I figured Clint and Kate, we’ve got 3 great episodes out of them, feel free to make it Daredevil revival for the last 3.

          • amaltheaelanor-av says:

Heh, sure. Though I do kind of like the image of Kate and Clint being chased by the Track Suit Mafia, and we see Daredevil fighting bad guys in the background ala that episode of Community when Abed helps someone give birth.

      • SquidEatinDough-av says:

She-Hulk would be the perfect place

    • yellowfoot-av says:

I really like Ritter’s Jessica Jones, but I don’t really see her being useful in the MCU’s storytelling. I’d love to be wrong though.

      • mdiller64-av says:

I also enjoyed Ritter’s performance but that show had more of a DCEU tone than MCU. I think if they bring Jessica Jones into the fold, they’d want to lighten the tone a little bit (less mind-rape and unrepentant alcoholism, for starters).

        • jmyoung123-av says:

Not every series needs to fit the same mold. There is room for a brooding hero. I can’t imagine Moon Knight will be too upbeat.

          • mdiller64-av says:

My favorite Jessica Jones moment came in “The Defenders” when Matt Murdock puts on her scarf as an impromptu disguise and climbs up the outside of the building, while Jessica simply takes the elevator and, on seeing him, says: “You look like an asshole.” That’s the MCU Jessica Jones I want – blunt, sarcastic, has no time for anyone’s bullshit, and is therefore funny.

        • derrabbi-av says:

Casting the same actors isn’t the same thing as bringing in the narratives of the Netflix shows which is looking more and more likely.

        • roboj-av says:

She should’ve and still can be more like the MCU’s version of Buffy.

        • wrighteous-86-av says:

How would that be Jessica Jones, then?

        • kikaleeka-av says:

The mind-rape & alcoholism have been part of Jessica Jones’s story since she was created. Unlike the rest of the MCU characters, she actually started out in “adult” comics (Marvel’s “Max” imprint).

          • mdiller64-av says:

Oh, I know – I just think that the MCU version of the character would most likely be a different take (as is the case with all MCU characters – they use the comics as inspiration, but not as a guidebook).

      • normchomsky1-av says:

All I really want is a few cameos

        • rogueindy-av says:

This. I don’t particularly need to see “what if Quake fought Ant Man” (though it would be pretty fun), but a little more acknowledgement of the old TV stuff would make the world feel so much bigger and richer.

          • bigal6ft6-av says:

The Snap/Blip gives a huge chance to reset a lot of the character dynamics to keep the same Netflix canon backstory. Like Kingpin should be in jail according to Daredevil S3 but there’s a Blip gap, also he’s the freakin’ Kingpin he gets out of jail all the time. (he should be rather well known though, he was outed as a criminal mastermind on Daredevil but y’know, can no prize handwave it away)Only thing that would undo their Netflix backstories would be like Matt Murdock goes “Yes, father, I shall become a Daredevil!” or y’know Ben Ulrich shows up not dead.

      • dabard3-av says:

I feel you. But then I ponder what could have been if they had synced up from the jump. I think they’d have fit nicely, and hilariously, in the opening parts of Infinity War, where Banner, Stark and Strange are fighting Ebony Maw.
Luke Cage stands in front of Banner, who can’t Hulk out and says, “I got you, little guy”

Spider-Man takes one look at Jessica and says, “Uh, hi” and Jessica says, “No, kid. Just… no”Daredevil and Strange do weird mystical trickery shit.

And finally, Danny Rand looks at Stark and says, “Hey, Tony. We had a meeting the other day about that distribution deal.”

        Stark: “Who are you again?”

Plus, I very much need Krysten Ritter to look at Chris Evans in some future MCU property and says, “Hey, soldier.” Just someone warn me so I can have my fap towels ready.

      • rogueindy-av says:

It felt like her show ran out of juice by season 3, but that doesn’t preclude her from making cameos and stuff. And I still want a Defenders 2, dammit!

      • Sarah-Hawke-av says:

I loved all 3 of them (JJ DD and LC), what do you mean there was a fourth? Don’t be silly! But I hope the Netflix stuff is wiped like Star Wars’ old canon. Allow the MCU to pick and choose what it wants to keep from it.Basically what I’m saying is please don’t bring back the Defenders, that was soooooo bad! Lol.

      • soylent-gr33n-av says:

She should be there just to roll her eyes when any other superhero gets too serious

      • doobie1-av says:

Jessica Jones is weird because her story has a much more obvious arc than most other characters. The Kilgrave story is great, but once she deals with it, she’s just another hardboiled PI. It’s why the first season of the show is among the best Marvel shows ever, and the rest is…not. It’s also why she hasn’t really had a good comic since the original Alias run ended.

    • hootiehoo2-av says:

Hopefully they work Matt in with Spidey and FF when FF is out as we need more people in the real NY setting. But so far Peter’s manhattan looks nothing like Matt’s from the streaming show Manhattan.

      • on-2-av says:

In fairness, a LOT of gentrification has happened recently in Hell’s Kitchen, so they could even that look right out.

And honestly, Queens never looks like Manhattan.

        • hootiehoo2-av says:

True but I still pass by Hell’s Kitchen (use to work near there in the mid to late 90’s what a shithole) and it’s still suspect late at night.  I think it also could be Spidey has been out and about New York in the day time while DD is out in the city at night.

        • rogueindy-av says:

In the MCU it had a whale fall on it though. A lot of S1 revolved around that.

      • bigal6ft6-av says:

After the Multiverse shenangians in Venom and No Way Home I’d be totally okay if the next MCU Spider-Man movie is a NYC gangland brawl with Kingpin, Tombstone, Black Cat, Spidey, Punisher & Daredevil.

    • TRT-X-av says:

Yeah it’s really weird everyone is obsessing about Murdock but no one cares about Jessica or even Luke.I liked this take on Jessica and I really hope Misty and Colleen make a comeback as well.

    • destron-combatman-av says:

But her character was fucking awful…

    • storklor-av says:

The three best things about the Netflix shows were two excellent villains in Kingpin and Kilgrave, and Ritter’s Jessica Jones. It would be great to see her make the canonical jump to the MCU in She-Hulk.

      • smittywerbenjagermanjensen22-av says:

Even in a golden age for live action female superheroes (Melissa Benoist as Supergirl, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Caity Lotz as Sara Lance), Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones is one of my favorites and has a distinct no-bullshit edge and niche

      • capeo-av says:

Cottonmouth was also a fantastic villain until he was killed about halfway through LC season 1, which really ground the momentum of the narrative to a halt. Woodard is a fantastic actor and I liked he Mariah, but Ali was killing it, and the rest of the season felt unmoored without him.

        • igotlickfootagain-av says:

It was a really bizarre decision. There’s all this build up of Cottonmouth’s character, and then he’s just wiped off the show without his arc being completed.

    • briliantmisstake-av says:

I would love for her and Cox to have more scenes together, even if it’s a one off cameo.

      • smittywerbenjagermanjensen22-av says:

Ritter was so good as JJ. It could have easily been a one note performance, but she managed to layer in pain and vulnerability under the prickly exterior.

    • hamburgerheart-av says:

This is what I’ve personally been most excited for about the MCU. I still love the show and think its some of the best stuff Marvel has made but I’m excited to get to see him be his full flippy, swingy, bought-and-paid-for-by-Disney glory

  • dabard3-av says:

Here is what we can salvage from the NetCU:

    * Daredevil & Kingpin
    * Jessica & Kilgrave. Leave the annoying sidekick blonde where she belongs
    * The idea of Nuke, but not that guy and certainly not killing him off
    * Luke
    * Danny ONLY WITH LUKE! NOT ON HIS OWN.

That’s kind of it. I tend to agree that Punisher just isn’t Disney material

  • soylent-gr33n-av says:

Shit, let’s get Krysten Ritter and Mike Colter up in this bitch. And for the love of God, Marvel, find a way to get Jessica Henwick’s Colleen Wing involved. You don’t need to include Danny Rand (please don’t), but more Colleen would be awesome.

    • ghostiet-av says:

Henwick said she had a Shang-Chi role she had to turn down to do the Matrix Resurrections, so I think she’s part of the plan if they do bring back those Netflix faves.

      • lisarowe-av says:

she wasn’t offered any roles. she had auditions for both movies which isn’t a guaranteed casting. both sides knew about each other and they said to her she could only audition for one or the other and she chose matrix. Both Disney and Warner Bros. knew about the other offer and gave her an
ultimatum: She could audition for their movie only if she forfeited the
competing project. Neither role was guaranteed.it’d be a waste to have her play katy anyway. “why not xialing?” i could see her being cast as xialing but xialing was full chinese and grew up there while jessica is biracial. it’s either have jessica do a chinese accent or change the story a bit so that she’s lived in the states long enough. they could’ve changed the story and had her runaway to england and then she could just do her natural accent… anyway lol.

    • deb03449a1-av says:

Danny Rand is awesome, please include him and bring him back. But do not have Finn Jones play him.

      • gatorlokishorns-av says:

I feel like his work would’ve been better with better directors, writers, cinematography and fight choreography. There’s plenty of horrible actors in the MCU that don’t seem as bad cause the product is more well made than the Iron Fist show. The other Netflix shows are only good because they have good acting, the pacing, cinematography(not DD, the shots in that are brilliant) and dialogue is pretty awful and they look super cheap but Ritter, Cox, Colter, Bernthol and Donofrio all put up stellar performances.

        • deb03449a1-av says:

This is true. There are a lot of problems with Netflix’s Iron Fist, but they comics character is Danny Rand is not the problem. Comics character Dany Rand is great.

          • hcd4-av says:

I think Andrew’s right and the overall quality of the shows—and the success and or lack thereof writing and casting—influenced how all of them were received, but the criticism of Iron Fist did center for a lot of folks that he was a white guy with Asian culture sidelining Asian characters. Now, I think that’s kind of the point of him (especially when paired with Luke Cage), and that Daredevil got a bye from the public that he’s a ninja with plenty of problems because he came first and the show was better, but that does mean Danny Rand the comic character is the problem.

        • angelicwildman-av says:

Bernthol recently stated he would return if Disney didn’t water down PG-13 his character.

        • capeo-av says:

I feel like his work would’ve been better with better directors, writers, cinematography and fight choreography. There’s plenty of horrible actors in the MCU that don’t seem as bad cause the product is more well made than the Iron Fist show. I’m not sure there are a whole lot of “horrible actors” in the MCU, but that aside, Jones was a whole other level of bad. Yes, the writing, directing, cinematography and fight choreography ranged from mediocre to piss poor but literally every other actor in season 1 ran circles around him, despite the material. You couldn’t buy a single thing that came out of his mouth. He was better in season 2 and Defenders, when he was more a foil for better actors to play off of, but all together he never seemed like he had any grasp of the character. I will grant that the writers didn’t give him much to work with, but usually an actor can still pull some charisma and gravitas out of role out of a leading role.

          • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I have seen few performances as bafflingly bad as Jones in the half an episode of ‘Iron Fist’ I was able to make it through. Just … so many bad acting choices.

Finn was awful as Danny Rand. At not one point did he rise above the terrible writing/direction to prove otherwise. Dude couldn’t throw a punch, let alone act like he was supposed to be the champion of K’un-Lun. It didn’t help they completely half-assed the actual IRON FIST mythos itself…I can’t even remember what the mystical city of K’un-Lun looked like.

    • storklor-av says:

Danny: I have to go now. My planet needs me. (Danny died on the way to his planet)

    • rogueindy-av says:

He was better in Defenders. I think that a) the character just works as part of an ensemble that can continually clown on himb) the same showrunner that did Inhumans was a poor choice

      • kikaleeka-av says:

Remember, though, he did Iron Fist S1 before Inhumans, & then he got replaced for the much better Iron Fist S2.

Not really. He said IF Daredevil is ever in the MCU, it will only be Cox. Not the same thing.

    • Madski-av says:

And what are the chances that MCU is not going to do Daredevil? And how big of a dick Kevin Feige would have to be to say “oh, this actor is going play this character if we ever choose to bring this character back” without having any sort of arrangements or a contract with that actor? Isn’t that a bit presumptuous? And kind of insulting to Charlie Cox? Does he not have other things he can do? The headline is definitely misleading, I’ll give you that. But it’s just semantics. It’s not outright bullshit.

    • burnitbreh-av says:

Even in your paraphrasing, the intent is clear: “if Daredevil is ever in the MCU, it will ONLY be Cox.” This only makes sense if they’ve got Cox under contract.

He wouldn’t say that unless Cox is under contract.

Well, there go Rex Smith’s comeback hopes.

  • freshfromrikers-av says:

Well, his audition tape was pretty good.

  • themoopofvenice-av says:

Charlie was great, but Vince Vaughn was spectacular.  I hope we get a whole lot of his Kingpin moving forward.

Introducing some of the Netflix characters to MCU makes way more sense in the Disney+ shows than in any movie. After all, they came from TV. More organic and can ease them in.

    • capeo-av says:

I think it’ll be two fold. Some small cameos in films that seed D+ shows, plus introductions in D+ shows that lead to full fledged films, likely with a D+ series first. Marvel Studios seems to be is treating their D+ series as important and narratively essential as their films. Wanda becoming all-powerful Scarlet Witch, Sam taking the Captain America mantle, introducing Kang and the destruction on the multiverse in Loki. These are all things that can’t be quickly encapsulated in a quick introduction when they appear in their own films. D+ makes it now even more serialized comic book style than the films by themselves even were.

Finn Jones waits patiently by his phone.

  • realgenericposter-av says:

This headline is a blatant lie.  “If we ever have Daredevil, it will be Cox” in no way confirms he’s coming to the MCU.

    • schwartz666-av says:

Come on man, with all of the evidence out there, this is as close to a 100% Feige confirmation as possible.Honestly, I surprised he even admitted the Charlie Cox part at all ahead of the debut.

    • capeo-av says:

He would never say such a thing unless Cox is already under contract. Otherwise that amounts to Feige saying, if Cox isn’t on board we’re never doing Daredevil, which is absurd.

  • brianjwright-av says:

    he said taint

  • coffeeandkurosawa-av says:

Cool news, and thanks for the clear headline. io9’s own headline was bizarrely baity for something that seems fairly cut-and-dry.

  • cura-te-ipsum-av says:

Now just make sure Homelander stays far, far away.

  • uptonwevil-av says:

Did they even audition a single visually-impaired actor for the role?

  • arrowe77-av says:

Just do one thing: change his damn costume! I hated it so much, I felt it was anti-climatic when he put it on, which is the opposite effect it should have.

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Can we have Turk Barrett come back to keep getting shit on again and again?

  • weedlord420-av says:

Fans will be very excited then very frustrated when Elektra shows up and drags him away on another adventure.

  • grandmasterchang-av says:

With Black Widow gone, wouldn’t Jessica Jones be more obvious?

  • rottencore-av says:

shocked they’re using Cox instead of Affleck.

  • debeuliou-av says:

That’s not what he said tho.
    Like, very much not.

He said “if daredevil joins the actual mcu, then it’ll be cox”
Not “daredevil will appear in the mcu and cox will play him”.

There is like, a massive difference there.

  • kikaleeka-av says:

Dear everyone saying “he just said IF, but they won’t actually DO it”,…heh.Signed,
    the future
