In one of the most jarring cases of professional whiplash in some time, Killer Mike, the winner of three brand-new Grammys, left the ceremony in police custody, reportedly following a physical altercation. Per The Hollywood Reporter, authorities detained Killer Mike on an alleged misdemeanor charge unrelated to his appearance at the Grammys.

Representatives from the LAPD media relations department confirm that an individual was detained and questioned around 4 p.m. at the Crypto.com Arena following a physical altercation. Tweets from around this time show Killer Mike in police custody.

The Recording Academy did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Though we likely won’t know why this is how his triumphant night ended until he’s formerly booked, TMZ reported that it was an altercation with a security guard. Sources for The Hollywood Reporter called the whole ordeal “a big nothing.”

Killer Mike took home three Grammys before things went south. The rapper took home statues for Best Rap Album for Michael, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Song for “Scientists And Engineers.” This was Mike’s first win since 2003 when he took home a duo for his collaboration with Outkast, “The Whole World.” He was last nominated for the 2018 Run The Jewels song “Chase Me.”

“You cannot tell me you get too old,” Killer Mike said in his acceptance speech. “You cannot tell me it’s too late.”

Update [2/5/24 12:39 a.m.]: The LAPD Media Division tweeted Killer Mike was booked for Misdemeanor Battery. His lawyer confirmed to Variety that he has been released.
