Kim Kardashian is really doing the acting thing
Netflix has acquired Kim Kardashian's new movie, The Fifth Wheel, written by Paula Pell and Janine Brito
Aux News Kim KardashianLook out, Hollywood, there’s a new It Girl in town. This It Girl was already an It Girl in other realms—reality television, fashion, even law apparently—but now Kim Kardashian has decided to really commit to being an actor. She’s coming off of a buzzy supporting role in American Horror Story: Delicate, in which she got to show off her comedic chops. Now she’s flexing those chops even further with her new film The Fifth Wheel, which this weekend was acquired by Netflix, according to Deadline.
Kardashian will reportedly play the “fifth wheel” in the female-driven ensemble comedy. Not much else is known about the movie, possibly because there’s not much else to it yet: the outlet reports that writers Paula Pell and Janine Brito came up with the idea and pitched it to Kardashian immediately after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended. Kardashian bought in and was “very hands on” in participating in every pitch meeting as they shopped the film around Hollywood. Competition for the project was apparently heated, but Netflix—also home to comedies Wine Country and Girls5eva, in which Pell and Brito are also involved—won out.
Pell is a notable alum of the Saturday Night Live writers room, while her wife Brito has credits on One Day At A Time, Bless The Harts, and Mr. Mayor. Beyond American Horror Story, Kardashian’s acting credits are mostly voice roles in the PAW Patrol movies and cameos as herself on sitcoms. However, her stint as an SNL host in 2021 generally exceeded expectations—perhaps because she sought advice from a number of high-profile performers, including Amy Schumer, Dave Chappelle, Michelle Wolf, Ellen DeGeneres, and James Corden (according to TMZ).
Unclear how launching a film career fits in with Kardashian’s legal studies. Clearly, she’s a woman who likes to play many roles at once (TV star, law student, mogul, muse, mother…), but it’s a lot to juggle for someone who said in May she was hoping to take the bar exam within the next year. In fact, she said at the TIME 100 Summit that she’d be okay quitting the cameras and becoming a full-time lawyer. “I always joke with my mom—who’s my manager—I say Kim K. is retiring, and I’m just going to be an attorney,” she said. Well, hold off on the retirement party, because Kim K. has another career to conquer.

Prospective review:Fifth Rate.
Wanting to be against it, but then reading that Paula Pell is so deeply involved…
Good comedians make bad decisions, especially when there’s stupid money at stake. Ever see The Toy with Richard Pryor?

I actually have! Yeah it’s pretty mind-blowing that that movie actually exists. It feels like something that would be like a fake movie that Kenneth parcell talks about in 30 Rock, and yet it’s real! And not just Pryor, but Ned Beatty and Gleason are in it! And Richard fucking Donner directed it. Just nuts.
I just don’t understand why they specifically went after KK for this role. Paula Pell gets to work with some really great people!
Absolutely not.

Look out Judi Densch!
If Kim K. is granted damehood there’ll be no stopping her!
Eh, I liked her early career indie films better.
Talk about a cum back story!

She’s the famous equivalent of that rich friend who doesn’t work but is always “becoming” her latest hobby for a few months – yoga instructor, painter, etc.
lawyer…
Oh yeah! I distinctly remember thinking “Sure, Jan” at the time.
Five bucks says if she gets her degree she’ll not bother with the bar exam but still call herself a “lawyer”.

I still watch AHS because apparently I love to punish myself and let me tell you, that between her, Emma Roberts, and AHS’s writing, it is a glorious train wreck of cinema.
I told my wife this is the first season in a long while I’m just going to skip, she can watch it if she wants. There’s campy bad acting and then there’s just bad acting. AHS has gone far afield of keeping my attention anymore.
Do you think professional unicyclists describe a person who takes up too much of their time as “a real second wheel”?
