Kim Petras became the first transgender woman to win a Grammy for Best Pop/Duo Performance. Beating the likes of ABBA, Coldplay and BTS, Post Malone and Doja Cat, and Camila Cabello and Ed Sheeran, Petras shared the awards with Sam Smith for the song “Unholy.” This was Sam Smith’s fifth Grammy award.
“Sam graciously wanted me to accept this award because I’m the first transgender woman to win this award,” Petras said to rapturous applause.
Winning for “Unholy,” which was included on Smith’s 2023 album, Gloria, Petras dedicated the award to other transgender performers and trailblazers that cleared the way for her accomplishment, particularly Sophie. “I want to thank all the incredible transgender legends
before me who kicked these doors open for me so I could be here
tonight,” she said. “Sophie, especially my friend who passed away two years ago, who told me this would happen and always believed me. Thank you so much for your inspiration, Sophie.”
Scottish pop innovator Sophie died two years ago after falling from a two-story rooftop. Sophie was a legendary transgender artist who came to prominence via singles like “Bipp” and “Lemonade.”

It reminds me of the pro women’s soccer team losing to a team of freshmen boys. No not college freshmen, high school freshmen lol.I remember seeing this documentary about the “battle of the sexes” of tennis that took place in the 70s too. A 55 yr. old pro named Bobby Riggs who was well past his prime beat like 1-2 of the top female players(that were in their primes) before ultimately losing to Billy Jean King. She was 29, he was 55. This is like if I beat the shit out of a boxer from the 70s who is now a senior citizen and then pretend it has merit. Like when Mike Tyson turns 80 if I whoop his ass am I tough?
Anyway, “Unholy” is garbage, but I do have a soft spot for Petras’ very stupid and danceable “Coconuts”:
Unholy is an ear worm that was way too short. Could’ve at least had another Sam Smith verse to put it over 3 min.

Came here to write the same thing. Unholy is one of those songs I just switch away from as soon as it comes on but Kim Petras has some bops, and Coconuts in particular should have achieved more chart success

In high school it was like several times a minute; so I’m at least getting better about the whole ‘Strangers With Genitalia’ thing
I watched that performance and acceptance, and imagined just how furiously the wheels were turning in Tucker’s office at Fox. Something, something, end of Western civilization…
Last time it was the gays getting married that’d lead to the downfall of Western civilization/the traditional family unit/etc. There’s a new moral/sociopolitical panic every 10 – 15 years or so.
But at least denying same sex marriage wasn’t as awful as the current effort to deny trans people gender affirming care. Now they want to charge parents with child abuse for allowing Billy to be Billie.
