Kirsten Dunst thinks the Spider-Man movies she was in are the best

Aux Features Film

It’s been 10 years since Spider-Man 3 brought Sam Raimi’s vision of the smartass superhero to an end, but the character’s already been rebooted twice. There were Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man movies, which saw Andrew Garfield play Peter Parker as more of an angry nerd, and now Tom Holland’s donned the primary-colored spandex as part of the MCU. The latter portrayal has generated far more positive buzz, and Spider-Man: Homecoming looks to be a return to the fun, wisecracking days of old. But as far as Kirsten Dunst is concerned, she doesn’t need to see any of the Spidey-centered movies released after 2007.

Dunst, who played Mary Jane Watson in all three of Raimi’s films, was recently asked about her webslinging-adjacent days while promoting her new film, The Beguiled, with director Sofia Coppola. “I wanted to be in that movie [Spider-Man] so badly,” Dunst tells Variety. “I loved it, and I wish we could have made a fourth.” And she’s right that Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 were wonderful movies, though the less said about emo Peter in Spider-Man 3 the better. But it sounds like Dunst is quite attached to the films, which might be why she’s indifferent to the reboots. She hasn’t seen either of the Webb movies, and it doesn’t sound like she has plans to watch the Holland-led ones: “I don’t care. Everyone likes our Spider-Man. C’mon, am I right or what? Listen, I’d rather be in the first ones than the new ones.” Well, at least Tom Holland has Tobey Maguire’s seal of approval.
