CBS’s Late Late Show has become the most recent in an increasing number of late night shows to be forced to stop down production due to a confirmed COVID case on the show’s set. In the case of Late Late, the diagnosis went straight to the top, with host James Corden announcing on social media that he’d had a positive test.

“I just tested positive for covid 19,” Corden wrote in an Instagram post. “I’m fully vaccinated, boosted, and because of this, am fortunate enough to say I feel completely fine.” The host went on to say that the show would be taking a few days off.

News of The Late Late Show taking a pause comes not long after a similar situation over at NBC, where Seth Meyers announced that Late Night would be taking a similar break on Tuesday after he himself tested positive. (Meyers also noted that he felt fine, giving similar thanks to vaccines and boosters—although we can’t help but think there must be some kind of link science should be looking into between being a late night talk show host and having an easy time of it with the disease.)

All of this comes not long after Jimmy Fallon announced his own diagnosis, which occurred shortly after The Tonight Show went on its holiday break. (Fallon reported “mild symptoms,” so maybe the secret to complete immunity is being a late late night host, as opposed to merely taking the first shift each evening.) Also, now we’re wondering if the late night hosts had some sort of secret party over the holidays together, breathing their lung gasses on each other as some sort of suited white guy ritual.

Anyway: James Corden is fine, but you’ll have to wait a few days to get your next installment of “Rich TV man thrusts his mouse crotch at people just trying to get to work,” more’s the pity.

The asymptomatic thing could be a product of them taking frequent high quality PCR tests that will detect a low level of the virus that most people would never even know they had. Everyone I know who has gotten covid has definitely had symptoms, even if they’re not super serious.

      Exactly this.
I do know a few people who’ve had positive tests without symptoms but they were only taking the test because their partner or coworker got a positive test after noticeable symptoms.

That’s something I’ve found interesting since the beginning. Many people like Corden, other entertainers, athletes, etc have to take the tests regularly as a matter of course due to their jobs – whether they are experiencing symptoms or not. It makes me wonder if I may have tested positive at some point if I were in the same situation. Could I have had the virus and never known it (either thanks to my immune system early on or thanks to my vaccination/boost status more recently)? And if so, does it matter? Is it still meaningful to stress out over skyrocketing case numbers knowing seeing as it appears to be only about as dangerous to the vaccinated as a seasonal flu? Or are there better metrics (say, hospitalization numbers) that are a better indicator? Are asymptomatic tests a waste of resources that are in short supply? Should the tests be reserved for those who are feeling sick?I have no authority to answer any of these questions, but I can’t help but to think about them.

the potential asymptomatic of it all is what really fucks with my head. like it’s possible i’ve had it dozens of times!

Right? It’s like the “tree falling in the forest with no one around” thing. If I had the virus but didn’t experience any symptoms, then did I really get sick?

          • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

well it’s more like ‘if i had the virus, but didn’t experience any symptoms, how many people did i accidentally infect?’

This is exactly why the correct response if someone asks if you’d managed to avoid Covid so far is “As far as I know.”

From The Times today:This week, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the U.S. government’s top infectious disease expert, suggested that it was time to stop focusing on case counts.“As you get further on and the infections become less severe, it is much more relevant to focus on the hospitalizations,” Dr. Fauci told ABC News on Sunday.https://www.nytimes.com/live/2022/01/06/world/omicron-covid-vaccine-tests/covid-300-million-cases-globalBasically the vaccines are doing their jobs and focusing on positive cases isn’t as helpful as in previous waves, mostly because Omicron is super contagious (I know at least a dozen people who either had it or currently have it – I’m in isolation right now, but fortunately still negative). The prevalence of at home tests also means that the positive case numbers we are seeing now are also likely significantly undercounted.

    “Anyway: James Corden is fine”

I miss Craig Ferguson so much. His “who gives a shit I think it’s funny” approach is the only late night show I’ve enjoyed, and I fucking loved it.

    • markagrudzinski-av says:

He brought a wonderful sense of anarchy to the stale talk show format. He briefly had a terrific talk radio show on Sirius, which also ended way too quickly.

    • drips-av says:

oh 100% I miss him so much. I try to keep up with his various game shows he seems to occasionally host (not my jam) and he had a decent little docuseries a bit ago, but it’s not the same.

  • i-miss-splinter-av says:

Hopefully it never comes back on the air.

  • markagrudzinski-av says:

I wish Corden a very slow recovery.

  • sensesomethingevil-av says:

The CDC passed a new rule requiring Late Night hosts to quarantine for up to 6 months on Thursday. It will not be retroactive.

  • glabrous-bear-av says:

I really hope he has minimal symptoms, recovers quickly, and mysteriously disappears never to be heard from again.

  • jeffreyyourpizzaisready-av says:

I used to be like all of you and hated Corden’s show, but since the pandemic started it’s been delightful, a highlight for me. So much anarchic fun.
