Dave Grohl has kept very busy over the last year through gigs that have seen him work as a musician, director, columnist, and drum battler. Eager to continue branching out into new fields, he’s also just finished a stint as a late night co-host, stopping by The Tonight Show to help interview Lil Nas X and share stories with Jimmy Fallon about stuff like the time he caught his mom drinking beers with Green Day.

This humanizing story (who among us has not caught our parents cracking cold ones with the pop-punk stars of old?) was brought up as Grohl discussed his new TV show, From Cradle To Stage. Grohl says that when his mom, Virginia Hanlon Grohl, had just retired after decades of teaching public school, he wanted to spend her free time in nontraditional ways and he ended up inviting her to hit the road with him.

“And she started going on tour with me,” Grohl says. “I gave her a laminate and she would just go and hang out. I’d be onstage playing and then get offstage and be like, ‘Where’s my mom?’ and,” he explains, “She’d be drinking beers with Green Day upstairs and hanging out.”

Grohl also says that Virginia’s experience on tour made her wonder where all the other pop star moms were—presumably when Billie Joe Armstrong swore and needed to be reprimanded by a responsible adult. To answer this question, she interviewed the parents of other famous musicians and wrote the book that the From Cradle To Stage show is based on.

Watch the entire video for the rest of Grohl’s interview, which touches on other subjects such as touring in vans, farting Beatles, and more.

For a brief moment I was wondering why Keanu Reeves was on the chair.

does it feel like Dave Grohl is drifting dangerously close to a Phil Collins level of thirsty, menschy ubiquitousness that forced Collins to disappear for decades? I hope not because I like Grohl, but lately it seems like he’s everywhere, just being everyone’s cool Uncle Dave.

Yeah, I see that too. I was actually thinking like “the grand old man of rock and roll”…even though he’s not old. Well, he is at his peak, and I don’t want to deny him that. And he is the coolest of the cool, apparently. But you do have to be careful not to over-saturate. People love to tear you up at a certain point.

i’m just happy there’s one wholesome rock star that’s still around.

      Nah, Phil’s an ass.

The truck thing may be a bridge too far for me.  But honestly, still love the guy.

Nah, as poppy and old-school as the Foo Fighters sound is, it’s still enjoyable, the current music-biz landscape makes it almost impossible for someone to be as unavoidable as Collins was in his prime, and Grohl hasn’t foisted anything as aggressively, unbearably shitty as “Sussudio” on us if nothing else.

Dismissed guy: nope, still not bad enough to rival Sussudio.

      Collins was NEVER cool.

You take that back!!Actually you are correct, but that didn’t stop me from growing up listening to him in the ‘80s, along with Genesis. I was -not- one of the cool kids in that respect.

    • asynonymous3-av says:

Nah…Grohl’s actually cool; he doesn’t really seem to take himself too seriously. He’s more like Jack Black, if anything.

  • stickmontana-av says:

Dave Grohl is one of the good ones. Ever since I saw the drum battle and seeing him on Conan, I’ve gained a great deal of respect for him. He seems very down to earth despite being in such a legendary band.
I’m not even really a Foo Fighters fan. He just seems like a cool dude.

  • kurtsghost94-av says:

Grohl AND Fallon together? The obnoxious pandering and ass kissing must have been off the charts…

  • sybann-av says:

“Dave Grohl’s Mom Has Got it Goin’ On” – wrong band, but.
