Les Misérables

Aux News Coming Distractions

Even before Anne Hathaway opens herself up to merciless fanboy criticism in The Dark Knight Rises, she's already facing the judgment of some slightly more niche, yet no less ardent devotees: "Mizzies," a term for lovers of the musical Les Misérables that we did not make up, and a group of people who will no doubt be combing this trailer for Tom Hooper's latest film version every bit as closely as your average Batman obsessive. Strangely, there are a couple of other parallels here to that first Dark Knight preview—the juxtaposition of Hathaway's innocent, fragile little rendition of "I Dreamed A Dream" with the pervading sense of griminess and despair, lots of people looking up at things—and some diehard Mizzie is no doubt already composing a vexed blog post about Russell Crowe's Cap'n Crunch costume. And again like Dark Knight, those people have to wait just a little longer to see and—most importantly—hear more from other stars like Hugh Jackman, Helena Bonham Carter, Amanda Seyfried, and Sacha Baron Cohen, and whether their resepctive singing and Frenchness will fulfill the expectations set by so many years of Les Misérables lore. "I can't wait to see the bread!!!! It better look crusty!!!!" someone is probably tweeting, or should be.
