Linda Cardellini and Christina Applegate do some grief-bonding in Netflix's Dead To Me trailer

Aux Features TV

Not all Netflix Original series are created equal, but pairing Christina Applegate with Linda Cardellini makes Dead To Me a must-see. The first trailer for the new series from Liz Feldman (2 Broke Girls) teases an intriguing dark comedy about two very different women brought together by the loss of their respective partners, but–here’s the fun part–one of them has a big fat secret. And she might be kind of cuckoo-bananas.

Executive produced by Cardellini and Applegate with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, Dead To Me looks like it’ll make for a decent reason to cancel your plans the weekend of May 3. Here’s the official synopsis for the series, which also stars James Marsden:

Jen (Christina Applegate) is a sardonic widow determined to solve her husband’s recent hit-and-run murder. Judy (Linda Cardellini) is an optimistic free spirit who’s recently suffered her own tragic loss. When the two women meet at a support group, they become unlikely friends despite their polar-opposite personalities. But as they bond over bottles of wine, Entenmann’s cookies and a shared affinity for The Facts of Life, Judy desperately tries to shield Jen from a shocking secret that could destroy her life as she knows it. Dead to Me, created by Liz Feldman (2 Broke Girls, One Big Happy), is an addictive dark comedy that dives into the painfully unfiltered, weirdly funny waters of grief, loss and forgiveness.

Is the secret something other than the glaringly obvious twist that Linda Cardellini is responsible for Christina Applegate’s husband’s hit-and-run death? Please?

I hope it’s neither that or that she was having an affair with the husband.

I don’t think affair is the right word. The way the description words it, Cardellini’s character also lost her partner, so I think it’s more likely the husband was leading a double life and was married to both, and she puts the pieces together first.

helps to listen … Cardellini lost her fiancé, not husband.  Double dipping husband is too trite of a trope so probably not that.  Maybe undercover husband with Applegate as happy cover wife and Cardellini infiltrates to protect or uncover something (though that is tired trope also) … or fuck, it’s just two depressed grieving partners looking for some distractions.

        Worse, it could be both!

I didn’t read it that way. Judy desperately tries to shield Jen from a shocking secret that could destroy her life as she knows it.This reads as Judy protecting Jen, not Judy protecting Judy. I read it as either Christina Applegate killed her own husband, or he committed suicide.(Or, her husband is Marsden, who’s actually Teddy IRL and gets killed every day.)

I was going more with Cardellini being suspected in her fiance’s death.

The bird in the window drove the car that hit her husband… The bird doesn’t like Christina Applegate’s character…

Or it could be a stealth Scooby Doo crossover and Linda Cardellini as Velma is hiding out from g-g-ghosts…

Even considering the giant suck that is/was Two Broke Girls, I think I’ll give this a shot. Love both actresses.

I was just going to say that that 2 Broke Girls credit gives me pause, but I’m with you, will at least give it a look.

Wow, Ed Asner? That guy’s gonna be acting until his 100. And still be better than most of the people he works with.

Just her stammering reaction when Bill squirted beer from the keg all over the front of his pants—and she thought he wet his pants—was freakin’ hilarious.

  • overg-av says:

Kind of cool to see Cardellini get to play the comedic part. She’s an excellent actor, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen her play a funny character(I missed Scooby Doo, so not sure if that would qualify).

So, Widowed White Female, yeah. Looks like it has potential to be fair.

Is mentioning that this comes from the same person who brought us 2 Broke Girls supposed to draw in viewers?
