Those recently recovered 17 minutes of footage from 2001: A Space Odyssey—which promised to finally show audiences the legendary sequence of events where Dave Bowman searches for a replacement antenna, among other revelations—will officially remain on the cutting room floor, according to Warner Bros., who released a statement to Wired saying it has no plans to do anything with it. “Additional footage from 2001: A Space Odyssey has always existed in the Warner vaults,” the studio said via e-mail. “When Mr. Kubrick trimmed the 17 minutes from 2001 after the New York premiere, he made it clear the shortened version was his final edit. The film is as he wanted it to be presented and preserved and Warner Home Video has no plans to expand or revise Mr. Kubrick’s vision.” (Which you can probably take to mean, “At least, not until it’s time for another anniversary re-release.”)
