This March, Miley Cyrus is kicking off summer a little early with her new album, Endless Summer Vacation, out March 17. As she’s learned how to buy herself flowers—and pen a global hit—it seems nothing’s stopping her now. Other highlights for March include Lana Del Rey’s Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, Kali Uchis’ Red Moon In Venus, Fever Ray’s Radical Romantics, the newest record from experimentalist Yves Tumor, as well as the debut album from indie supergroup, boygenius. Plus, we’ve got records from both Depeche Mode and U2 on the way, with the former’s Memento Mori on March 24, and the latter’s Songs Of Surrender on March 17.

What’s the opposite of toxic positivity? “Feel Good,” the first track off Slowthai’s album Ugly, finds the artist as excited about the messy bitch of living as he’s ever been, even through the lens of his self-proclaimed “tears of a clown.” The second single off the London rapper’s third studio LP, due for release on March 3, makes a sweet contrast to the industrial self-negativity of Ugly’s lead single “Selfish,” but maintains a similar pep in its step. Structured around an echoey repeated chorus (“I feel so good”) the track feels more like a mantra than a truth—within the infectious, racing plucked guitar melody is the bottled feeling of faking it ‘til you make it. The boygenius record is gonna be my go-to for awhile I think. But I’m intrigued by noisier Tanukichan as well, so that will probably occupy the first 4 weeks of March.

I was hoping for a new U2 record of original songs. It’s been about 6 years since the last one. I think Bono said they had made another album but it hasn’t been released yet for whatever reason.

U2 have been, and will always be, my all-time favorite band. I hold a seemingly unpopular opinion that their last two albums were good; Songs of Innocence might be my favorite since their Achtung Baby/Zooropa zenith. THAT being said … they really do seem to be stuck in a moment that they can’t get out of … and that moment is the past. They are not exactly a nostalgia act, as I do think they put far more thought into their “retrospectives” than other legacy/jukebox acts. I saw their recent Joshua Tree tour, and it was fantastic – incredible visuals for each song, some re-jiggering of the originals, the band sounded great. I am listening to Bono’s memoir now, and again, the audiobook is full of music, sound effects, different vocalizations. All of these Songs of Surrender are supposedly re-thought (although so far they only seem to be slowed-down, like movie trailer song covers). And finally, I’m sure the Vega Achtung Baby show will be visually stunning. So, I don’t think they can exactly be called “lazy;” they apply care an thought and effort and passion to all of these projects. But all this somewhat false hussle seems to keep them from making and playing new songs and new music. As an all-time fan, I would greatly prefer a banged-out album of new music recorded during some pandemic downtime than a vegas Achtung Baby extravaganza (without Larry!).

I’m right there with you on Songs of Innocence. It’s such an incredibly interesting album with some true bangers.Every Breaking Wave and California are both right up there, with the former particularly an all-timer U2 classic. It’s an album I’ve listened to countless times in full over the last nine years.

I understand people’s negative reaction to it and for not giving a chance or just not being into U2, but yeah it is so good

Well said. I don’t think I agree that they’re a legacy or nostalgia act; I never thought of them that way. They’re decidedly not like the Rolling Stones or even Dylan, replaying the hits over and over again, coasting on their past laurels. Or maybe they do do that; I haven’t been to a concert of theirs in ages. What Bono said years ago is that he’s busy as an activist and so it takes the other lads to remind him that he’s in a band and they need to get to a studio. If true, and I don’t remember the exact quote, I can that as one reason for the time between records.

For all its goofiness, “U Talkin’ U2 2 Me” really did nail that their biggest problem is they’ve backed themselves into a corner to where every album they put out has to be HUGE and it really rattles them if it misses. I think they honestly just don’t know what to do anymore.

They also have an album of new music already recorded. Just no release date; if they decide to release it.

I think I heard about this on U2X radio (SiriusXM Channel 32). I love the fact that what started as a ‘limited time only’ channel morphed into something I enjoy on my daily commute. I’ll likely both buy this album as well as continue to listen to them in U2X.

    • snagglepluss-av says:

They are in their 60’s now, long past the point where most bands are doing anything original or exciting. We should be okay with it but a lot if u2 fans, including me, are a little bummed out by recent activities. I think this has much to do with us reflecting on our aging as it is with their music

      • pairesta-av says:

When I saw them for the Joshua Tree 30th anniversary tour, looking at the crowd I actually thought “Man when did all these old coots start listening to U2? Oh, wait . . . “

        • snagglepluss-av says:

I always wonder what it’s like to be on a band that looks out from the stage and sees an audience with of young, hip and very attractive people to a crowd of middle aged people and the realization that they are the same people. Like the Stones used to play to screaming teen girls to people as old as they are

    • pairesta-av says:

Here’s the thing: they always claim they have a whole other album they recorded honest it’ll be out later. Then they never do it. It’s so frustrating.

Can’t wait for my “Endless Summer Vacation” to begin! 😜

Seen on highway billboard on a congested freeway: “If you lived in Lana Del Rey you’d be home now”.

Rapper ICE-T had one of the funniest MTV Cribs moments. While showing his mansion he said, if friends or family come over and they get hungry (walks over to several vending machines in his home) “Here you go! It’s a $1.50!” Haha, I never forgot that.
