Hulu’s corner of the Marvel universe may look even grimmer than Netflix’s at the moment, with plans for a Ghost Rider show and a Tigra & Dazzler cartoon falling apart last year (not to mention Runaways getting the axe), but Hulu does still have its M.O.D.O.K. show with Patton Oswalt in the works. In fact, the show’s cast just got expanded with some big names: As announced in a press release today, Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. has added Ben Schwartz, Melissa Fumero, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Beck Bennet, Jon Daly, and Sam Richardson to its cast, which seems like a good sign for a show that seems pretty weird.

For those who don’t know the eponymous M.O.D.O.K., Oswalt’s character is a Marvel villain that looks like a giant head in a tiny chair with tiny arms and legs, and his name stands for Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing. Garcia, who you may know from Lucifer, will be playing M.O.D.O.K.’s wife Jodie, who is starting to question what she’s getting out of her relationship with her evil husband. Schwartz (soon to be better known as Sonic The Hedgehog) is M.O.D.O.K.’s son Lou, who is an “overly confident” dork with no friends and no particularly noteworthy skills. That stands in contrast with M.O.D.O.K.’s daughter Melissa (Fumero, from Brooklyn Nine-Nine), who apparently looks like her father but is nonetheless the most popular girl in school and a future figure skating star.

Outside of the family, McLendon-Covey will play brilliant A.I.M. scientist Monica Rappaccini, Bennet will play tech company executive Austin Van Der Sleet (he’s trying to take over A.I.M. from M.O.D.O.K.), Daly will play the Super Adaptoid (hey, an actual guy from the comics!), and Richardson will be playing endlessly loyal A.I.M. grunt Gary.

Wow, looks like they’re putting together a great cast of hilarious actors.Plus Ben Schwartz!

I love all these people, so I am pleased

  • lattethunder-av says:

Garcia? Did she drop her first name?

    • soylent-gr33n-av says:

      She’s doing a reverse Madonna/Cher/Shakira/Lizzo.

I was about to say, who the fuck is Garcia?

Look buddy— if there’s a better way to show that the AV Club isn’t just copy-pasting articles from Marvel.com but is rather meticulously typing out these articles and intentionally including errors and ommissions, they would love to hear about it.

Because they want to just copy-paste from Marvel.com, please understand, journalism is longer, harder, tangier than it looks.

I’ll watch it just for this.

I’m a little disappointed he’s not continuing his role as the Skelletrex-fighting Ghost of Christmas Way Future from I Think You Should Leave.

I know the animated Hulu shows will probably exist in their own ‘pocket dimension’ apart from the main MCU timeline, but I love the idea of an animated Guy Ritchie flashback where Killian is just exhausted with having to deal with M.O.D.O.K.

If Tigra/Dazzler was canned and MODOK is a go, then that’s all good news,  as far as I’m concerned…

  • voxafgn-av says:

you mentioned MODOK and Melissa Fumero and now I’m sitting outside a movie studio with all my money in a bucket

I am loving the idea of of Sam Richardson as an endlessly loyal A.I.M. minion, bringing some of that unflappably, foolishly positive Richard Splett-energy. This all sounds delightful. I had no idea Oswalt was actually voicing MODOK (Mental Organism Designed Only for Kirsten [Dunst]), I thought he was just producing.

  • bmglmc-av says:

So, are they retconning Oswalt’s role(s) in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., or are they going to offer a cleverish reason for M.O.D.O.K. looking like the K.O.E.N.I.G.s?

I mean, i’d be both up and down for M.O.D.O.K. starting off as a rogue K.O.E.N.I.G., that’d be D.O.P.E. i guess

The show is animated. Barsanti should’ve mentioned that, just like he should’ve mentioned Aimee Garcia before referring to her by her last name. There are many Garcias out there; fortunately, there’s only one Barsanti.

haha, the show is animated, and dude didn’t mention that? what am i doing here

      • wrightstuff76-av says:

Animated? Ah man I haven’t been this disappointed since the most recent Addams Family film.I mean you get Oscar Isaac as Gomez Addams and you put him in animated film! You were so close guys, so close.

        • paraduck-av says:

I was so upset by the missed opportunity that I embarked on a one-man boycott of that film in protest (a.k.a. didn’t feel like seeing it).Oh, and why would one cast Oscar Isaac in an adaptation of Dune but not as Duncan Idaho? Explain yourself, Denis Villeneuve.

      • avcham-av says:

Goddammit, I want live-action Patton Oswalt with little arms and legs glued to his face and a rocket on his chin. Is that too much to ask? Why did I even get out of bed today

I don’t think these shows are set in the MCU, in which AIM and Howard the Duck have already popped up.

She’s AIM’s current Scientist Supreme, or at least the Scientist Supreme of one of AIM’s main splinters. As a scientist who specializes in toxins, she’s also a literary reference to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Rappaccin.”
