Mary Kay Place is probably best known for starring in The Rainmaker and Big Love, voicing various characters in King Of The Hill, winning an Emmy for her role in Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. In honor of her new film Diane, where she plays the titular character, we sat down with the actor for a video version of our interview series Random Roles.

    She was fantastic on Lady Dynamite as Maria’s mother, who was not quite as midwestern-sweet as she initially seemed, despite not resembling Maria all that much (which I think was kind of the point)

    Awww – I was waiting for her to include “Pecker” in her list of Martian movies. She was so good in that – “Don’t mind Ms. Sweet Tooth – she’s all sugared up.”

    Mary Kay Place’s role in Being John Malkovich is easily one of all time funniest performances. I’ve consistently loved MKP in every performance, but I was definitely in the dark about the incredible breadth of her career. What a legend…
