Matt Smith is going back to space for Star Wars: Episode IX

Evidently, three seasons of zipping around time and space wasn’t enough for former Doctor Who star Matt Smith, because he’s now going back to the past and to a far away galaxy for Star Wars: Episode IX. That comes from Variety, which says it’s “unknown” whether Smith will be part of the Resistance or part of the First Order, and we’re having a similarly hard time trying to guess which way this will go.

In the old days, pretty much everyone with an English accent was with the Empire, but that’s no longer the case thanks to Rey. He could be a good guy, then, but Smith also has the rigid, pronounced chin of a First Order officer. Smith should grow a beard if he’s going to be a hero, but he’ll look just fine bowing to Kylo Ren in one of those little caps if he’s a baddie. That being said, he’s clearly trying to be Han Solo in that picture, right?

Either way, Smith is joining a lot of new/familiar faces in Star Wars: Episode IX, including Dominic Monaghan, Keri Russell, and Billy Dee Williams (who has actually been in a couple Star Wars movies before). J.J. Abrams is directing this one, and we’ll hopefully get a name for it before too long.
