May 2023 might go down in television history because it marks the end of current TV favorites like Succession, Barry, and Ted Lasso. But as these doors close, several more open. HBO bounces back with the political satire White House Plumbers and thankfully revives The Other Two. Meanwhile, Apple TV+ has four new series debuts, including a rom-com with Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne. What’s more, Pete Davidson returns in Bupkis, Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an action comedy, and Netflix’s Bridgerton presents a prequel. With all that in mind, here is The A.V. Club’s guide to what you need to know about in TV land in May.

Nat Geo’s partly biographical drama A Small Light, which airs new episodes on Mondays, will also stream on Disney+ and Hulu the following day. (It’s all about that corporate synergy, people.) The show traces the life of Herman Miep Gies (Bel Powley), who is asked by her employer, Otto Frank (Liev Schrieber), to shelter his family during World War II. Miep is the one who found Anne Frank’s (Billie Boullet) diary and decided to preserve it to later share with the world. The eight-episode season also stars Joe Cole and Amira Casar. [Saloni Gajjar]

Definitely in for Class of ‘09, love me some Brian Tyree Henry.

There’s also a show on Amazon called Class of ‘07, about a bunch of Australian women at a ten-year class reunion at their old boarding school, when a huge earthquake occurs, turning the area into an island and stranding them. It’s weird.

      • fireupabove-av says:

I’m going to watch that and treat it like a prequel to Class of ‘09. How did an earthquake in Australia lead to the creation of an A.I. surveillance state in the United States? We’ll find out!

All that matters is ITYSL season 3. Happy to skip most of May and go straight to the 30th

I cannot recommend The Great enough. It’s so awesome, and further proves that Nicholas Hoult can do no wrong.

It always amazes me to see that shows I watched half an episode of and then gave up on — looking at you “The Mayans” and “Fear the Walking Dead” — are still on the air, and have somehow racked up multiple seasons. Did either of them ever get good?

Speaking of new TV. Anyone try to slog through fired on mars? I thought it was godawful

Before I even say this, know that I’m a person of color.
But, why is it mentioned in the section on ‘Bupkis’ that the show includes “whatever other white man agreed to make a cameo”? That seems randomly aggressive to me.Does Davidson have a reputation for something race related that I’ve never heard about?

    • quetzalcoatl49-av says:

Typed right after Machine Gun Kelly, probably realized their list of guest stars was very white dude basedAlso saying there’s an offset of white dudes in the cast is not aggressive

      • brobinso54-av says:

Seems so to me. I dunno that it needed to be pointed out as though Davidson has some kind of agenda. MOST of media is ‘white dude based’, so I don’t get why its even pointed out here. I am excited to see how many things AREN’T all white these days, though, and I’m really enjoying the media that makes a point of being diverse and inclusive too.

        • quetzalcoatl49-av says:

Because the writer was snidely saying that the show is TOO white dude based from the guest stars. I agree that shows used to be chock-full of white people back before we started thinking of inclusivity, and while many shows are correcting this mistake these days, the writer of the article was trying to point out (clumsily) that this show didn’t seem to take that into account when casting this show.

          • brobinso54-av says:

I will concede that ‘snide’ and ‘clumsily’ are more accurate than ‘aggressive’.

First time reading AVC? It’s been like this since their good writers quit last year.
