Mel Rodriguez on Getting On, Will Forte, and On Becoming A God In Central Florida
TV Features Mel Rodriguez
If you’ve watched any television in the past twenty years, you’ve seen Mel Rodriguez. With guest spots on everything from Gilmore Girls to Big Love to Community, the actor made a habit of popping up for an episode or two—often as a law enforcement officer—before landing the role of Nurse Patsy De La Serda on HBO’s beloved Getting On. Since then, Rodriguez has been on a roll, bringing romance to The Last Man On Earth as Todd, and leaving a lasting mark on Jimmy McGill in Better Call Saul. This August, he stars opposite Kirsten Dunst in Showtime’s On Becoming A God In Central Florida, which provided the perfect opportunity for us to discuss his most notable projects with a video version of our Random Roles interview. In the chat, Rodriguez told us about the struggles of starting his career in New York City, the “masterclass” that was Getting On, and the reason why he said the script for On Becoming A God In Central Florida was “the best thing” he’d ever read.

He was really good as Todd on Last Man on Earth. Todd & Melissa for all their up and downs were probably the most bearable couple on the show
It was all worth it for how horrified Tandy was when he realized he married such a monster right before Melissa showed up.
Tandy was the monster, not Carol.
They both seemed pretty monstrous to me. The sleep apnea mask and constant needling could drive anyone bonkers.
Todd, on the other hand, shows up just in time for Melissa.
No love for Chubowski in Enlisted?!?! That was the first role I really noticed Mel Rodriguez. He had this hilarious plummy accent that seemed like too much at first then just worked for some reason.
Randy: “Nobody likes an ironic name!”He was weirdly hilarious as Chubbowski though
Hah! Randy’s the best. I think my favorite Chubowski line has to be from the finale:Pete: Right now, this guy wants a date with Lori Loughlin.Chubowski: I’ve got the steak. Now bring me the SIZZLE!Derrick: Are we still in the army?I mean, some parts don’t age so well but still great
That was such a cute show…
I want to READ Random Roles. Thumbs down for this great feature’s pivot to video. Give me a transcript.
Exactly. I’m a man on a bus. Let me read.
I too do not want this to become a video thing because watching videos is not what I want out of this website.
Thank you! It used to be my favorite feature, but I never bother anymore because it’s all video. Tell your bosses the whole “pivot to video” thing is stupid coming directly from your audience.
agree!!!!
Just wanted to hear his Gilmore Girls comments, can’t find it for the life of me in the video.
Just like yesterday’s video with Judy Greer, someone please alert me when the transcript is posted.
I don’t get it. Where’s the interview?
right???

“getting on” was sooooooo good. he was great in it!
Another long-time reader hoping for a transcript, so I can enjoy this (once great?) feature again. It’s my favorite recurring feature on the site so hope it comes back.
I personally have no interest in video from this site (other than movie/TV trailers or the return of A.V. Undercover.)
Enlisted. ALWAYS Enlisted. #HandsOnHeads for the man who got to say, “you’re the author of my obesity!” AND was the last honest date Lori Loughlin ever had.
Just so that there’s one more voice saying this POST THE TRANSCRIPTWatching videos blows my cover while slacking off at work. Be considerate.
Whoa. How long ago has he filmed On Becoming a God that he got so much thinner in between that and doing this interview? It took me a second to accept that, yes, this is Mel Rodriguez, not a Mel Rodriguez impersonator not really doing a good job.
I have zero interest in the video version of this recurring feature. Please return to the text version of this once-great feature. Please.Kinja nearly broke me. This will.
i HATE that this is a video. VIDEOS SUCK. I CANT WATCH VIDEOS AT WORK. I CANT SKIM PAST THE ROLES I DONT CARE ABOUT IN A VIDEO.FUCK A VIDEO.also i only know this guy as the “monkey knockout gas” security guard from Community.
