Bad news for fans of everyone’s favorite platonic zombie-slaying power couple (from, like, 2015) today: TVLine reports that the previously announced Walking Dead spin-off series centered on fan-favorite characters Daryl and Carol has just lost its Carol.

That’s right: Actor Melissa McBride has made like so much cultural enthusiasm for The Walking Dead itself, bailing on the franchise at long last. Which is to say that McBride has apparently departed the planned series, leaving Norman Reedus, who plays lovable crossbow wielder Daryl Dixon, as the show’s full lead.

Despite rumors that the loss of the Carol character (who’s spun through various flavors of heroic and antiheroic throughout the mothership show’s 12-year run) was a creative decision, AMC has asserted that it’s simply a scheduling problem, with McBride apparently unavailable to travel to Europe to film the untitled series.

Hey, it’s network spokesperson time:

Melissa McBride has given life to one of the most interesting, real, human and popular characters in The Walking Dead Universe. Unfortunately, she is no longer able to participate in the previously announced spinoff focused on the Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier characters, which will be set and filmed in Europe this summer and premiere next year. Relocating to Europe became logistically untenable for Melissa at this time. We know fans will be disappointed by this news, but The Walking Dead Universe continues to grow and expand in interesting ways and we very much hope to see Carol again in the near future.

The Carol and Daryl spin-off was originally announced back in September 2020, as the original Walking Dead was gearing up for its very slowly rolling final season, which is set to wrap up some time this year. The show would be the fourth narrative Walking Dead spin-off, after Fear The, World Beyond, and the upcoming anthology series Tales Of The.

I haven’t followed any of those shows in a very long time, but wasn’t the supposed selling point of this spinoff show the two of them together as a cutesy set?

  • elvis316-av says:

Like the article said,  a really cute idea from 2015.   Who knows what adventures they will have between now and the time the franchise becomes unprofitable.

which will be set and filmed in Europe this summerSo wait, it’s set in Europe? How’s that happen?

    • docprof-av says:

I’m deeply confused by this as well. I wouldn’t think transatlantic travel would be high on the priority list for restoring in the post apocalyptic zombie world. And Daryl doesn’t exactly strike me as a goes to Europe kind of guy.

    • fireupabove-av says:

Maybe the Trash Heapsters show up with another helicopter?

    • philipst47-av says:

That’s what I was wondering. It’s not like there’s planes or boats doing a transatlantic trade.

    • badkuchikopi-av says:

They established at the very end of World Beyond that the 28 days later style super-zombies are in Europe. Some of the people who created them were in the commonwealth city when the outbreak started at a convention. So maybe Daryl meets one of these scientists and is lured to Europe with the promise of a potential cure?
I mean whatever they need to get someone to Europe or explain how the smart/fast zombies crossed the Atlantic.

      • mytvneverlies-av says:

or explain how the smart/fast zombies crossed the Atlantic. Well you say they’re smart. Probably not that smart though.

“I mean whatever they need to get someone to Europe or explain how the smart/fast zombies crossed the Atlantic.”Rafting, like army ants, with a mass of their own bodies.

    • electricsheep198-av says:

I was wondering about that as well. I haven’t watched TWD since they were on the farm with the old guy and his daughters so I don’t know what’s going on. Is it just filmed in Europe or has the whole clan moved to Europe to fight French zombies? Did Carol and Daryl ever sleep together? That’s unrelated to Europe; I’m just curious.

  • mpbourja-av says:

I sure hope they can find someone else who can look sad all the time.

  • pearlnyx-av says:

So who’s going to respond to and interpret Daryl’s grunts?

  • mytvneverlies-av says:

BTW Is anybody watching Fear The Walking Dead? Were they just snowing that guy the whole time so he’d help them?Is Charlie really mortally sick?

    • badkuchikopi-av says:

I believe one of the showrunners confirmed that Charlie really is doomed. Which is …one way of resolving the awkwardness when the mother of the guy she killed re-joins the show.

      • mytvneverlies-av says:

They paper over little details like that all the time in TWD universe.Alecia forgave Charlie and June. Morgan and Daryl forgave Dwight. Maggie is forgiving Negan. They all forgave Tara.Forgiving someone for killing your loved on is just another Tuesday on TWD.Then again, this is Madison we’re talking about.I just remembered. I thought Madison was one of the people that ambushed Charlie’s boyfriend. It sure sounded like her. I was shocked when they all got ate.

Just the idea made me sleepy.

    LET IT DIE

  • themightymanotaur-av says:

How can they spin so many shows off a single show that struggles to get decent storylines written for it?

  • theeuglycasanova-av says:

Nothing of value was lost then. Certainly doesn’t need a 4th spinoff especially since it’s been awful for a long time now.

  • crankymessiah-av says:

Who the hell actually still cares about this show/franchise? At all?

  • hootiehoo2-av says:

Can I just find out what the fuck happened to Rick already? Yes this last season part 1 and 2 have been good but lets end this fucking show. They can’t even get a .40 rating all the time anymore. I rather get Thomas Wayne Negan vs. Joker Maggie than that Maggie and Negan spin off.Just show me Rick went off somewhere else and acted like it was season 2 and took over some place.

    • bigal6ft6-av says:

I watched all 20 episodes of Walking Dead: World Beyond to get that answer. And answer there was! The garbage lady needed to work with the Civil Republic (helicopter folk) and sold Rick to them for safety. No idea what happened after that but that’s why he was Taken.

  • hornacek37-av says:

The simplest solution seems to be … don’t film in Europe so McBride is available.Seriously – is AMC so strapped for cash that they *have* to film in Europe?  How much money are they saving by choosing this location? (and I have no idea where in Europe this is being filmed)

  • greghyatt-av says:

Apparently, she’s made some ant-vax remarks and this is the network saving face.

  • mwfuller-av says:

    Korl!  I mean…Carol.  Yeah, that’s it.

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

“Daryl And Carol” and “Dallas And Alice”?

  • knukulele-av says:

    Dixon/Dixoff

  • Nitelight62-av says:

They should bring in Larry and his other brother Daryl.

  • schrodingerslitterboxx-av says:

“from, like, 2015″ seriously, why the snark in every single post? i come here once in a while and leave after three minutes and i’m just exhausted. i don’t know if you’re under orders to try to be what deadspin used to be (no access, lots of attitude) but it’s not working. get a job covering something you don’t hate

  • smittywerbenjagermanjensen22-av says:

A Darryl & Carol spinoff without Carol sounds pretty, pretty bad Melissa McBride as Carol is an underrated TV badass character

  • amessagetorudy-av says:

It’s very meta that the “show” itself will not die.

  • SquidEatinDough-av says:

I gave up on TWD years ago but I’ll watch this if it’s shot like Highlander the TV Series. As an idiot American that’s my only visual concept of Europe (iow, it looks mostly like Vancouver).
