Meryl Streep won’t be put in The Cara Delevingne Hole, is coming back for Only Murders season 4

Streep will reprise her role as Loretta in the Hulu show's new season, avoiding the fate of basically every Only Murders In The Building' love interest to date

Although Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building is good at many things—rapid-fire dialogue, depicting people being tremendously bad at actually solving murders, jokes where Martin Short makes fun of Steve Martin for being 5 whole years older than him—one thing it’s not great about is keeping track of its characters’ various romantic partners. Good news for plucky up-and-comer Meryl Streep, then, as Variety confirms that she’ll officially be back for the show’s fourth season, continuing in her role as Short’s recent love interest, Loretta.

Thus will Streep/Loretta avoid what we’ve come to think of as “The Cara Delevingne Hole,” i.e., that black abyss into which Only Murders shoves the numerous love interests that the series’ podcast-hosting leads tend to attract each season. (At least, the non-Amy Ryan-played ones.) The hole mostly consists of characters (briefly) attached to Selena Gomez’s Mabel at this point (shout-out to Aaron Dominguez, who has hopefully made a nice life for himself in The Hole), although Martin’s character Charles has shoved at least one character in there, too, in the form of Andrea Martin’s Joy.

Given that she’s played by Meryl Streep, the only real question about whether Only Murders would bring Loretta back was probably whether Streep could find the time to film; she’s listed as “recurring” in Variety’s story, so it sounds like she had a good enough time with season 3 to film at least a few scenes. The real question, now, is whether Mabel’s current love interest, Tobert, will also be coming back, after departing for Los Angeles at the end of Season 3; we imagine Jesse Williams sitting in his nice home somewhere, eyeing The Hole with a mixture of dread and anticipation. Is it getting closer? Is it calling to him? He knows what all Only Murders love interests know, deep in their hearts: Cara Delevingne comes for us all, eventually.

“Being trapped in a hole with Cara Delevingne” would be a good white card.

Let’s see…Streep, Williams, Dominguez, Delevigne…now which one looked completely out of place and ground the show to a halt every time he or she turned up…

I’ll rec this, thinking we’re thinking of the same person. But really I could see someone saying that about almost any of the love interests. The romance in the show has always been its weakest point.

I’m gonna guess the one that could barely be convincing as a human, let alone as a realistic love interest.

The fact that Cara Delevingne is considered an astonishingly beautiful woman makes me think the world is playing a practical joke on me.

Tobert was beyond dull…see no need for him to return.

I thought it was funny in the finale that, in the span of 5 minutes, they dispatched both Streep and Tobert to California (presumably, at the time) never to be heard from again.  I’m glad – but very surprised Meryl is coming back.

She was pure joy every second she was on screen… and there have been very few “guests” on the show who have really added something special to the mix (in terms of guests playing themselves, Sting was pretty fun).

Only Murders has a season 4? I thought/hoped that it was finishing after 3.

The cliffhanger of S3 definitely meant that there would be a S4 — plus, the ratings and critical acclaim for the show are still really high (and how much longer are Steve Martin and Martin Short likely to be working at that level – I am still amazed at the physical comedy that Steve Martin is doing at 78).
