The trailer for A24’s newest horror film, X, is here. The film, directed and written by Ti West and starring Mia Goth, Brittany Snow and Kid Cudi (credited under his full name, Scott Mescudi), is about a ’70s film crew with Hollywood dreams who are making a porn flick. They convince an old couple in the middle of nowhere to let them use their house as the set. An old couple in the middle of nowhere and a bunch of horny hot people? What could go wrong?

West previously directed independent horror films like The Roost, The House Of The Devil, The Innkeepers, and The Sacrament. X marks his first film since 2016’s In A Valley Of Violence, a western, though he’s been busy directing episodes of television for shows like Them, The Exorcist, and Wayward Pines.

The film also stars Jenna Ortega, Owen Campbell, and Stephen Ure. X marks Goth’s first horror film since 2018’s Suspiria and High Life. Snow previously starred in 2013’s Would You Rather.

A24 has made a name for itself in the horror space, having released movies like The Witch, It Comes At Night, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer, Hereditary, Midsommar, and In Fabric. This is West’s first film with the distributor.

Despite worries about the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic’s effect on the box office, A24 has a full release slate lined up for 2022. In March they’ll also release Everything Everywhere All At Once starring Michelle Yeoh. They also have When You Finish Saving The World, written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg and starring Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard, lined up for this year, plus Jenny Slate’s Marcel The Shell With Shoes On. Colin Farrell and Jodie Turner-Smith star in After Yang, also set to be released the year. And The Sky Is Everywhere, directed by Josephine Decker, will hit Apple TV+ on Feb. 11.

A24: We pretty much just make horror films now.

    • thunderperfectmind-av says:

The whole paragraph about movies that aren’t horror films isn’t enough?

    • dirtside-av says:

A quick glance at their list on Wikipedia shows that they released 12 films in 2021 and only 4 of them were horror films.

      • butterbattlepacifist-av says:

Taking horror films seriously and releasing them at the same rate as your other genre movies means that you only make horror, and are therefore somehow less-than

      • bc222-av says:

They were also supposed to release another porn-related film, Pleasure, but I guess passed on it because they didn’t want to release an NC-17 cut.

I’m willing to give anything released by A24 a shot.

    • oldmanschultz-av says:

Those Bastards, by releasing banger after banger, have conditioned my brain to release endorphines as soon as the logo appears on the screen.

      • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

        They make sausage too?

      • bembrob-av says:

Midsommar was just ok. I liked the premise and had a decent setup but many of the characters were written as one-dimensional tropes and the movie kind of half-ass attempts to frame the Midsommar festival as like some rare, deep-rooted cultural philosophy that welcomes the foreign visitors to partake and bare witness as to broaden their worldview and show that there’s an actual rhyme to its reason but that mostly gets obfuscated by making them the unwilling burnt offerings when it’s implied that the previous victims freely offered themselves in service of preserving their heritage.

        • oldmanschultz-av says:

I don’t have much time today but I wanted to mention that Midsommar is one of my favorite movies of all time for many reasons, but one is that it’s emotionally resonant, even cathartic, in a truly sick and twisted way. I just think it’s delicious.

Speaking of A24 logos, my partner gave me some merch from their website over the holidays (socks, a long sleeve tshirt, a baseball cap). I love all of it, and I’m sure when I’m walking our dog I look like a crazy person.

        • oldmanschultz-av says:

That sounds absolutely awesome. Your partner sounds awesome. And if I saw you walking around with A24 swag I’d think the world of you!

          • JohnCon-av says:

That’s very kind of you. I once saw a guy carrying an “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives” tote bag in NYC Financial Dist. early on a weekend morning (when it’s a ghost town), and I RAN up to him, like—OMG THAT’S AMAZING! WHAT A HYSTERICALLY OBSCURE TOTE BAG! YOU MUST HAVE WORKED ON THE MOVIE?? CAN I TAKE A PHOTO OF IT? I THINK ABOUT THAT MOVIE LIKE ONCE A WEEK! and he was properly mortified, like “…..oh! uh … sure, yeah …”

          • oldmanschultz-av says:

Well, I wouldn’t do that, since I am terrified of strangers, but I totally empathize with the impulse.Honestly there’s certain stuff where there’s just no chance the average person is going to think you’re cool for rocking it so if you do rock it, you must be passionate about it, and I LOVE people who are passionate about art and movies and TV and music and all that. Those are the ones I relate to the most. And if I see someone like that in public, I’m not gonna talk to them, but I’ll be so glad to know they exist.

    • nonoes-av says:

now, there’s an ejaculation joke in there somewhere, but damned if i can winkle it out. i’ll get back to you.

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

…and the inevitable porn parody…It Comes At Night

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

and Kid Cudi, who’s legal name is Scott Mescudi,

  • oldmanschultz-av says:

I feel like Ti West and A24 were definitely meant for each other. This trailer looks great. The premise sounds intriguing. Looking forward to being entertained and terrified!

  • Blanksheet-av says:

This looks like the porn angle is a weak attempt to spruce up a generic horror plot. Unless the old woman monster is one of the actresses from an alternate universe/timeline.

    • bcfred2-av says:

Seems like a full frontal (haha) acknowledgement that having sex in a horror movie will get you murderized.

    • chronophasia-av says:

As opposed to all the old, generic slashers who added nudity and sex without “the porn angle”?

      Titillation is already generic horror.

  • mwfuller-av says:

This is paying all kinds of tribute to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

  • teageegeepea-av says:

I’ve been asking for a while when Ti West would make a new movie, so I’m glad to see this.

  • branthenne-av says:

Since this newswire is giving him the snub, I’ll point out that Martin Henderson is doing his best to give us a bargain basement Matthew McConaughey.

  • anathanoffillions-av says:

so they took that scene from IT and turned it into a movie, noice.Ti West needs a script collaborator, has always been my opinion.  The Innkeepers has an okay atmosphere and then just goes fucking nowhere.

    • unspeakableaxe-av says:

His movies are written rather terribly. I was very disappointed with House of the Devil when I stopped looking at it and started thinking about it.

      • necgray-av says:

My favorite part of You’re Next is when he dies.Fuck Ti West.

      • anathanoffillions-av says:

Yeah it’s crazy that film after film he makes everybody says “the script just isn’t there” but they let him do it again.  It’s like Chris Chibnall with these last seasons of Doctor Who…they had to look at those and be like “we’re letting him film these turdlets?  I guess we’ll fix it in post” (Narrator: They did not fix it in post.)

    • rowan5215-av says:

he seems to be insanely talented at setting an atmosphere and having likable, engaging characters, but actual story progression is not in his wheelhouse. House of the Devil works because the vibes are immaculate (and the kind of movies it’s homaging don’t really rely on airtight plot anyway), but The Innkeepers just falls apart when you realise that the atmosphere is literally all it has. I haven’t seen his other work but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were much the same – that being said, I love this trailer and I’m reasonably excited

      • necgray-av says:

What vibes? If you watched House of the Devil without knowing the title or the genre under which it was listed, you would never know it’s horror until about halfway. And even then, if you happened to be out of the room for that ONE scene, that barely minute-long scene, the subsequent film until the VERY END, would also tell you nothing. It only has tension because you expect tension. Tension does not actually exist. And then have fun with the 8th grade DIY home movie ending. It is a vaguely 80s music video for an attractive young woman dancing.I. Hate. That. Movie.(Sorry. That’s a lot. It gets mah goat.)

      • anathanoffillions-av says:

It certainly looks like he has the atmosphere right, Boogie Night of the Living Dead…and we’ve been talking about The Innkeepers but The Sacrament was one of the most overobvious and boring movies I’ve ever seen, and certainly did not justify exploiting Jonestown (Midsommar did a marginally better job)

  • gildie-av says:

I want to give Mia Goth the benefit of the doubt but being married to Shia LaBeouf makes me question everything she stands for.

  • usernameorwhatever-av says:

So it’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre mixed with the old jokes about “the farmer’s daughter”? Love it.They’ve even got the three holes! Wonder if there’s a milking machine behind one.

  • interlinked-av says:

I do love it when a trailer is comprehensive enough it saves me from having to see a movie.

  • notochordate-av says:

I’m intrigued. I hope the horror angle isn’t supposed to be dementia, after watching one too many Shyamalans I’m very over the whole ‘people whose brains are messed up’ as horror plot elements.

  • volunteerproofreader-av says:

High Life is the most disturbing fucking movie I’ve ever seen

  • aaaaaaass-av says:

I’da called it They Came For Us!
