In a fiendishly clever scheme to play with people’s emotions, Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts director Steven Caple Jr. shared a couple of big casting announcements on his Instagram today that seem carefully designed to trick you into conceding that you might be kind of interested in seeing Rise Of The Beasts. The first new addition to the cast is Pete Davidson, who people tend to have… a strong opinion about… and the other is Michelle Yeoh, who is great and universally beloved.

So, if you like her in Everything Everywhere All At Once, surely you must like her in Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts, regardless of how many Pete Davidsons are in it! Ergo, you should like Rise Of The Beasts! And if that’s the case, we have some other recommendations for you to check out (but not now, we don’t have time for that).

Caple’s Instagram post explains that Davidson is playing Mirage, an original G1 Autobot who turned into an old ‘70s-style Formula 1 car in the cartoon (but he’ll be a Porsche in Rise Of The Beasts, even though there were a ton of Autobots who turned into 911s and none of them were Mirage). Yeoh will be Airazor, who isn’t an Autobot at all. She’s one of the eponymous beasts, and in the ‘90s Beast Wars cartoon, she was a robot who turned into a bird. She’s also one of the only female Cybertronian characters in the original Transformers continuity, assuming you count Beast Wars as part of the original continuity, which you should (we don’t have time to get into this!).

Rise Of The Beasts stars Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback as the main humans, with Peter Cullen once again playing Optimus Prime (Caple said he’s the film’s “robot lead”), and it (at least partially) takes place in ‘90s Brooklyn. In addition to Autobots, it will feature Maximals (good guy robots that turn into animals) and Terrorcons (which are like Decepticons, but with more terror). After a lengthy delay last year, it will open in 2023.

This makes sense. I remember thinking “oh shit, that’s Orson Welles, Citizen Kane himself!” when watching the OG Transformers movie as a kid.

It’s really a shame that the CGI in Transformers Beast Wars is so so hard to sit through in 2022.

That’s fine. My level of am I going to see this just went from definitely not to still definitely not.

As long as Pete Davidson’s Mirage get blasted by Decepticon around 10 minutes of the movies. or a turncoat that get smash by Optimus Primal.

Ugh, so he’s going from a James Hunt era F1 car (Ligier JS11) to a generic Porsche 911, presumably due to marketing? How boring.I mean, the real race car is French. At least use an Alpine A110.

    • syafiqjabar-av says:

They probably try to make the cars at least plausible on the streets. This Mirage might also be an elaborate Energon reference? Since in that show Cliffjumper (who reuses the name of a G1 Porsche character) became blue and white in his powered-up form.

Why did nobody take note from the reception to Bumblebee? What we want is an extended version of the scene from Cybertron.

But no instead they heard “Try smashing all the different versions we’ve had together.”

Did they not just watch the terrible end to the WFC series on Netflix?

So you enjoy the Transformers franchise?    Is it hard living life as a complete idiot with severe brain damage?    I’ve never met you but I want you to know you have terrible taste and you are human garbage.   You are a terrible and embarrassing human being.   Fuck you for polluting our culture and world.

Just replying to myself to tell Charlie Meadows he’s an absolute plonker. I’m not replying to him directly so he can just stay in pending hell.

Honestly don’t think i’ve ever seen such a f****n idiot in all my life.

L….O….L!!!!I thought briefly that we might have a paid troll, going through with an assignment for trying to rile up emotions with the junk that his profile is filled with. But no, some folks simply are in need of medication, otherwise we see behavior such as what you’ve been subjected to in this case.
You CAN dismiss those troll replies, however. You’ve handled posting about it in just the right way, and thus didn’t give him any bites that he can see without searching for it.I’m still a grey on the AVClub myself, unfortunately.  It isn’t only trolls down here… **glances nervously around**

Seeing this space descend into full-blown troll shit-slinging has been pretty dispiriting.

They are making an animated movie, apparently set on Cybertron. It might be released in 2024 or 2025 at the earliest. ROTB is really them trying to recapture the height of the Bayformers phenomenon while also using a new art direction and cater to nostalgia for Transformers beyond G1 (the movie not only has Beast Wars elements but also homages to RiD2001 and the Cybertron trilogy animes).

    • syafiqjabar-av says:

They pretty much learned “toy buyers liked the Bumblebee designs” and is using that for ROTB. But they still want the action-packed spectacle of the Bay movies to capitalise on nostalgia for the early ones.

  • hoondonair-av says:

I believe Arcee would have a word about Airazor being the first female Cybertronian.

    • syafiqjabar-av says:

Airrazor did however get the first toy that was intended to be a female character. All the other female character toys before it were simple repaints of male character toys.
Her first toy actually had a funny history when in the Japanese dub Airrazor is male, which meant that Japanese Airrazor became the first canonically gay Transformers due to the romantic relationship with Tigatron.

Do people actually get excited for Pete Davidson?

  • charliemeadows69420-av says:

The perfect vehicle for Pete Davidson since he sucks and the people that like him are stupid.

For some reason I seem to enjoy torturing myself with these. Like I can’t help wanting to see how bad they’ve got this time, and how much a film can send me into a sort of mind-numbing despair when I realise there are still about 45 minutes to go

  • 0vvorldisabombaclaart0-av says:

    they’re still doing Bayformers?
