Moana’s heroine shows off her feisty spirit in Olympics spot

The first teaser for Disney’s upcoming Moana showcased The Rock’s demigod Maui. Then the studio released as its international trailer a cute little vignette about the titular character as an adorable toddler. Now, with a new TV spot, we’re finally spending some more time with the teenaged Moana, the hero of this thing. The footage focuses on our girl convincing Maui to join her on a world-saving journey. He’s reluctant, but she’s insistent, and serves him up a healthy dose of sass. “Ever defeat a lava monster?” he asks. “No, have you?” she answers. It’s a good introduction to the voice performance of newcomer Auli’i Cravalho, the Hawaiian native plucked from obscurity to be a Disney princess. In what little we hear, she’s got an appropriate amount of spunky youthfulness.

It’s appropriate that this look at the film aired during a night of Olympics coverage dominated by the ladies of the U.S. gymnastics team and virtuoso swimmer Katie Ledecky. Yes, teen girls can kick ass.

Moana arrives in theaters November 23, 2016.
