Modest Mouse had their “not-quite-a-comeback” in 2015, where they released their first record in eight years, Strangers To Ourselves. But the band took another extended break from making new music until now. Modest Mouse announced that they are releasing their first album in six years, The Golden Casket, on June 25 via Epic Records.

They shared the album’s first single called “We Are Between.” The opening guitar riff might sound a bit different from what we recognize as Modest Mouse’s signature melody, but we quickly dive into the textured musicality the band’s known for. Yes, it’s a bit poppier territory for Modest Mouse and it recalls Foals’ “Total Life Forever” but damn, it works. Leave it to Modest Mouse to cause a blog rock revival.

The digital liner notes say the album “hovers in the liminal space between raw punk power and experimental studio science” and from this single, we can see that Isaac Brock’s definitely experimenting with new elements. According to the tracklist, the record opens with a track called “Fuck Your Acid Trip” and we’re extremely curious as to what that one sounds like.

Check out the full tracklist below:

Isaac said in a Pitchfork interview back in 2015, “it’ll be released as quickly as it’s legally allowed to be” when talking about the follow up to Strangers to Ourselves. I guess 6 years is the legally allowable release time for those keeping track.

Think I’ll preorder the “Legally Impossible to Keep out of Your Hands” edition vinyl.

I will continue to pretend that The Moon and Antarctica was indie rock’s greatest farewell album.

Your dismissal of the entirety of Good News makes me sad. Obviously its not Moon and Antarctica, but it is a good album.

I think Car Seat Headrest is kind of the last bastion of this brand, which suggests that there may still be room for it, but it’ll be a while before a full-on revival happens.

“Modest Mouse are into golf now, apparently”As a longtime MM fan and recent golf enthusiast… all I can say is I can’t imagine how I would’ve handled the last year if I i couldn’t get out of the house a couple times a week and take a long walk with a view of the ocean, hundreds of yards away from anyone else, stopping occasionally to hit something as hard as I can with a metal club. The public course near me costs 15-25 bucks. Way cheaper than therapy.
Also, for some reason, you’re only allowed to drink in public if you’re playing golf.

Golf serves the same purpose as fishing – an excuse to drink. And with golf, you may even get to drive (a golf cart) drunk. My claim to fame in golf is I can hit the ball far and straight but can’t do anything else.  I’m all in for scrambles.

      • bc222-av says:

I get so much exercise in golf because I hit the ball very far but incredibly inaccurately, and inconsistently so. I do much more light jogging with 20 lbs of gear than I anticipated…

TIL that Dara Ó Briain is in Modest Mouse.

Flashbacks to an ex-girlfriend of mine and her repeated insistence that Modest Mouse’s first album was written/produced while “they were high on meth in a basement”.I’m not sure if this post is going anywhere, but the relationship certainly didn’t

When are Squeamish Squirrel putting out a new one?

  • anthonypirtle-av says:

It’s not bad. Nowhere near their best work, but it’s nice to know they’re still plugging away.

  • notochordate-av says:

Whew, I feel like I used to like their vocals more than this.
