It's going to be a blockbuster franchise-heavy year

After the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023, studio release schedules got a little hectic. Major films that were expected last year, like Dune: Part 2, got pushed back to 2024 instead. Which means that this year, the film calendar is actually pretty packed. We’ve got classic January horror movies like Night Swim, three different flicks in Sony’s Spider-Man universe with Venom 3, Madame Web, and Kraven The Hunter, and new entries in the Ghostbusters, Planet Of The Apes, Despicable Me, Mad Max, and John Wick franchises. Oh, and if you’re already making plans for the holidays next year, make sure you slot in some time for Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu. Here are the most anticipated films to look out for in 2024.

“The most anticipated films of 2024″“Madame Web”Haha okay dude sure

  • shartinyourjacuzzi-av says:

Looks like 50-70% sequels, reboots, and spinoffs.Ugh.

  • stevennorwood-av says:

I don’t know. I think Kevin Hart’s voice is much more suited to Claptrap than Jack Black’s. But I’m not a casting director, so…A lot of these I hadn’t even heard of, so I’m wondering if the anticipation was on the part of studio marketing teams. It’s not a great look for 2024 that so far I’m interested in maybe five films. But I don’t usually hear about the smaller ones until much closer to their release dates. And I’m no Dune fan but that Part 2 trailer looks wild.

    • precious-roy-av says:

Agreed, Jack Black’s voice is not suited for Claptrap whatsoever. It’s either going to sound horribly out of place whenever you hear it, or it’s going to take so much editing that casting Jack Black in the role was just an absolute waste of money.

  • 4jimstock-av says:

Argylle looks like a fun Romancing the Stone take off. Rebel Moon part one was such a convoluted mess I will  skip part 2.

  • naturalstatereb-av says:

Not a lot to get excited about here, ngl

    • yables-av says:

Madame Web has seen the future and she sees you watching her movie at 2x speed on Netflix in three years.

    • iggypoops-av says:

Not so much a list of “most anticipated” films than a list of “films being released this year that the studios desperately hope you will go see.”

    • bcfred2-av says:

I’m pretty fired up about Dune and Furiosa. But a haunted in-ground pool kind of gives off this vibe…

  • maximultra-av says:

No love for Alex Garland’s Civil War?When Rebel Moon Part 1 is in the gutter critically, is the sequel really that anticipated? Also, it’s hilarious that Madame Web is on this list at all, but in the Kraven entry it literally says, “At least it’s not Madame Web.” Consistency!

  • icquser810199-av says:

the obnoxious ways some of these have been marketed (too many “twisted minds”, the straight up LIE to have Mean Girls not be promoted as a musical) has made me more cynical than ever about the current state of studio production and distribution

  • jetenginejesus-av says:

“The most anticipated movies of 2024″, or “a list of all of the movies coming out in 2024 that I found a trailer for”?

  • yables-av says:

Minor pet peeve, but these Planet of the Apes movies might as well just all have the same title. There’s nothing that distinguishes the series chronologically. (E.g., the “Dawn of” entry isn’t the first one?) At least have the common decency to add a “Part VII: Conflict for Planet of the Apes,” to your movies, otherwise I will most definitely watch these out of order when attempting a series binge.

    • dinoironbody7-av says:

I liked how the four sequels to the original all had a different preposition before “Planet of the Apes” in the title: “beneath”, “from”, “of”, and “for.”

    • junjihyun-av says:

“Continuation of the Planet of the Apes”!

    • electricsheep198-av says:

I’ve had this thought as well, when I see them on the cable guide “Dawn” or “Rise” I can’t immediately remember which is which. I figured out that Rise means how it started, or “rose” from not existing, and “dawn” is it’s official beginning as a Planet of Apes.  So I guess “Kingdom” is where we have an official Planet of Apes that has reigned for some time.Does that undercut your point at all? No, because I had to do way more thinking than should have been necessary to parse these movie titles to where they made chronological sense.

I don’t usually care about typos but I was struck by the how Maya Kawke sounds like something a character would exclaim in a Downton Abbey porn parody.

  • cyrils-cashmere-sweater-vest-av says:

Started the slideshow and quickly thought to paraphrase what Kevin Smith once said about Beetlejuice,Is it possible we’ve said all there is to be said about Planet of the Apes? Then, is it possible we’ve said all there is to be said about Spiderman? Is it possible we’ve said all there is to be said about Ghostbusters?

    • fredsavagegarden-av says:

Until we get an adaptation of the story that had Peter kill Mary-Jane with his spider-sperm, there will always be SOMETHING left to say.

    • saratin-av says:

I mean, you could have said that about the Apes franchise prior to the newest trilogy and yet they turned out to be far and away the best in the series.

  • cloneofdijon-av says:

That is Florence Pugh in the image for Dune. It’s not Zendaya.

  • bongomansexxy9-av says:

This list is almost entirely comprised of sequels and remakes, for yet another year. It’s apparently never going to change that there’s too much money at stake for Hollywood to take a shot on something original (and speaking of not original I realize I’m not the first to gripe about it.) Independent and International film, people. The last refuge of original thought in cinema.

  • shadimirza-av says:

The only thing I’m anticipating is how much money I’ll save in 2024 but not going to the movie theater.

    • danniellabee-av says:

My thoughts exactly.I go to the movies a lot. Sometimes multiple times a week. From this list I am only truly interested in a few movies this year: Dune, Challengers, Nosferatu, Argylle, Gladiator and Deadpool.I have luke warm to no interest in most of these movies. I am usually not one to harp on this point but I think it is relevant for this article. The releases for 2024 are mostly remakes and sequels. Where is the creativity? Where are the original screenplays?! Other movies I am interested in for 2024 not listed here: Love Lies Bleeding, The Crow re-boot staring Bill Skarsgard, If directed by John Krasinski, The Bikeriders, Mickey 17, and Hit Man.

      • shadimirza-av says:

Oh, I’m absolutely seeing Nosferatu. Eggers gets a lifetime pass after The Lighthouse. One of the few movies I’ve seen twice in theaters.

  • soylent-gr33n-av says:

There’s, what, four or five original ideas in there? Everything else is a sequel, spinoff, or adaptation.

    • ooklathemok3994-av says:

34 out of the top 50 grossing movies from 2023 are sequels, spinoffs, or adaptations. Execs are just chasing the money.

  • chriska-av says:

    Which Wytch is VVitch?

  • bio-wd-av says:

Woof.  Only about 4 or 5 films on that list even remotely interest me.  Feels like a real come down after last year.

  • doingfootwear-av says:

    Interesting

  • dudebra-av says:

Fifty Shades of Aunt May is something we all need to see..

  • sh90706-av says:

Seems these are mostly in theaters.

  • saratin-av says:

Re: Argylle, “No longer adapting Mark Millar comics” – Is Kingsman: The Blue Blood officially not happening, then?

  • falcopawnch-av says:

lol @ this list that has Madame Web but doesn’t have Mickey 17

  • senatorcorleone-av says:

Fury Road wasn’t just nominated for Oscars, it won several.

  • moviefan70-av says:

The list is incomplete without Mickey 17. How can you miss Bon Joon Ho’s new movie?

  • furtive-glance-av says:

Flying cows to return in “Twisters?” Maybe somebody should try FLYING SHARKS. I bet that would work!

  • spookypants-av says:

Oh great, now Ghostbusters is pushing some woke climate-change bullshit on us.(Also, it’s not the first time people have frozen to death in NYC; ask Jake Gyllenhall.)

  • imaginaryfriend-av says:

Saw the shot for Borderlands; was so hoping it was a Doomsday sequel. So disappointed.

  • thenewguyinthecubicledownthehall-av says:

Why does ‘Challengers’ automatically have to have her choosing one or the other, or even worse the two dudes fighting about it? Poly tripods are fine, too.

  • jepmen-av says:

Enough movies I’d like to see. Didn’t know about the Ethan Coen one, Drive Away Dolls. But Macbeth was just too dark and serious, and if I didn’t know this one was a Coen movie I just would’ve seen a trailer for your run of the mill crimedy. They need each other, maybe? But it seems like the Coens have been done making truly special films for a few years now. They’re just keeping busy.

Pig was amazing, and I still love the first A Quiet Place, so the director doing a prequel was a nice surprise I learnt in this list. Hopefully he’s allowed to play with genre expectations like Pig.LOTR animation might get more enthusiasm after we see some footage. Might be amazing.I believe Kevin Costner made a few good films back in the day? Horizon will be worth streaming. Most stoked for Furiosa and Dune 2 and Civil War. Excited for Nosferatu.

“falling out between Orion Pax/Optimus Prime (Chris Hemsworth)“I’m sorry, what?! Not sure I can take Thor as Optimus. Honestly, I don’t think I can take anyone other than Peter Cullen as Optimus. Are we sure this isn’t one of those Netflix or Nick TV Movies or something?

    Where’s “MaXXXine”?
