MTV announced today that it's bringing back its much beloved alternative rock program 120 Minutes later this year. It will be hosted by gravel-voiced network vet Matt Pinfield, who helmed the show from 1995 to 1999, before leaving MTV to, among other things, become Vice President of A&R for Columbia Records and go to rehab.
The new 120 Minutes will, of course, air on MTV2 rather than the reality show-heavy original channel, though an online component, 120 Seconds, launches Friday on MTV Hive, a "standalone online destination for indie music fans."
120 Minutes, originally hosted by Dave Kendall, began airing on MTV in 1986 and was a favorite of nerds and record store employees all across the country before turning a little too mainstream, playing Sum 41 and Staind videos, and getting cancelled in 2003. In its hayday, though, 120 Minutes was a force to be reckoned with. In fact, Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video premiered on the show, alongside videos from artists like Morrissey, Blur, and They Might Be Giants.
