Glee star Naya Rivera is presumed dead after her 4-year-old son, Josey, was found alone on the boat they’d rented. According to multiple reports, the actress rented a pontoon at Lake Piru in Ventura County, Calif., on Wednesday and spent the day swimming with her son. When she was late returning the boat, staff at the lake went searching for them and found the 4-year-old alone on the pontoon. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department posted a tweet just after 10:30 p.m. local time Wednesday reading, “The missing person at Lake Puru [sic] has been identified as Naya Rivera, 33, of Los Angeles. [Search and rescue] operation will continue at first light.”

[Update: At 5:45 a.m. local time Thursday morning, the VCSD account posted a tweet stating, “The search for Naya Rivera will continue this morning at Lake Piru. The lake will be closed to the public while search operations continue. Dive teams from throughout the region will be assisting us through mutual aid.” At 10:27 a.m. local time, the VCSD tweeted again: “Multiple teams of professional search & rescue personnel are actively searching Lake Piru for clues to the location of Naya Rivera. With over 80 people involved in the search right now, we are using helicopters, boats, ATV vehicles, and ground personnel to try and locate her.”

At a press conference later on Thursday, VCSD officer Chris Deyer said, “there’s no signs of foul play, no signs of anything that went wrong besides a tragic accident,” according to The Washington Post. “Switching that mode to a search-and-recovery mode, like I said, does not change the efforts and does not change the gusto, what we push forward with the search operation. The goal is still to bring Ms. Rivera home to her family, so they can have some closure.”

At a 3 p.m. PT press conference, officials said they had spoken to Josiah. While authorities would not say if the 4-year-old saw his mother go under the water and not return, they did reveal that the child said enough for them to believe that “his mother never made it out of the water.” A written statement provided by VCSD stated that approximately 100 people are now involved in the search, but that divers are experiencing “less than one foot of visibility in the water” and “investigators believe Rivera drowned in what appears to be a tragic accident.” Approximately 45 minutes later, the VCSD released the 9-1-1 audio of a woman calling to report a “missing person.” The woman who placed the call informs the operator that her husband had found a child alone and she would be able to provide more information once she was on site.]

Per Yahoo! News, Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Eric Buschow shared that Josey got back onto the boat after a swim, but his mother did not follow. The 4-year-old was found sleeping on the boat by himself by other boaters in the lake. “He’s in good health,” Bushow confirmed Wednesday evening. “The family is going through a very traumatic time right now.” Josey is Rivera’s son with ex-husband Ryan Dorsey; the former couple have shared custody of their only child since their 2018 divorce.

Rivera’s fans have been leaving messages on the actress’ social media accounts since the news of her disappearance broke. “no matter the year, circumstance, or strifes everyday you’re alive is a blessing,” reads her Instagram post from July 2 that’s getting attention from fans. “make the most of today and every day you are given. tomorrow is not promised.”

In the years since Glee ended in 2015, Rivera has released a memoir and starred on the YouTube series Step Up: High Water. We will be updating this story with the latest as events develop.

Jesus Christ this is unspeakably sad.

  • theporcupine42-av says:

Hope this turns out for the best but God it’s bleak. Is the Glee cast cursed or something?

    • wrightstuff76-av says:

Yeah I can see what you mean, there does seem to be a cloud of bad luck hanging over a lot of the main cast members.I hope that there’s a good ending to this story and she’s found alive.

    • newdaesim-av says:

Naaah, that’s an exaggeration! See, Melissa Benoist met her husband on the set of glee and they…apparently got divorced when he turned out to be a violent domestic abuser who nearly blinded her in one eye.Well, shit.

      • martincrane-av says:

Yeah, I’m sure a cursed television show made him do that. I guess it’s her fault for signing on, too! Get your head out of your ass.

        • newdaesim-av says:

See, I want to point out that the concept we’re discussing when we speak of a ‘curse’ is that there are multiple tragedies tied to a particular point of reference without necessarily saying that the thing itself is the cause. There’s the curse of star wars, the curse of the crow, curse of the exorcist, even a curse for odd numbered trek films. It’s all very tongue in cheek, which you’d realize if you weren’t a stupid asshole grey with a reading impairment.

          • martincrane-av says:

You’re making a joke out of someone’s account of abuse, and not even accurately (she has pointedly not named her abuser and we should respect that). But, yeah, I’m the asshole for pointing it out.

          • newdaesim-av says:

Making a joke about a horrible situation is markedly different from mocking a victim. It’s called ‘gallows humor’ and it’s older than your introduction to ethics curriculum. You’d certainly have a point if I disparaged Benoist for being attacked, which I didn’t. By your accounting, anyone who makes a sarcastic reference to 2020 whenever something else shitty happens this year are being unconscionable monsters. Does it feel good being that rigid? Being that upright must be hell on your back.

I’ve had a mood swing, Kallekanin, and it occurs to me that I am unnecessarily contributing to more negativity in the world. Since I can’t edit out my responses, I’ll just apologize for losing my temper. I hate it when others are incordial to me, but I’m a hypocrite for responding in kind.  That said, I will continue working towards the day that I can be as polite online as I am offline.

          • martincrane-av says:

I have too, in that I’ve realized I can’t be reasonable about this topic at the moment (I’m recovering from an assault). I still don’t like your joke, but I wish I hadn’t responded to it emotionally.I appreciate you apologizing anyway, that was kind.

Well this took a turn for the pleasant. Gold stars to you both for taking a breath, counting to ten looking at your responses to each other from the opposite perspective. What a refreshing way to resolve the argument. Now, lets get back to snark everyone.

“Wait a minute. Are we sure this kind of calm de-escalation is even allowed on the internet?”Not in 2020 it’s not! What’s wrong with these people? Don’t they know we’re in the Darkest Timeline?
Wait a second … De-escalation of message board arguments and Gary Larson is creating new Far Side cartoons? Could it be … have we reached some turning point? Will things actually start getting better? Is this what hope feels like?

Lucky you! I’ve never been that desparate, but I can sympathize with the stupid obsession when a random person doesn’t agree with you. Thing is, I realized the likelihood that no side will change opinions it too high, and I’m as much a hypocrite as they are for arguing. It’s also a stupid way to waste your time obsessing over someone to the point of creating troll accounts, and I don’t want to self-manufacture extra reasons to make my life seem sad.

    • boner-of-a-lonely-heart-1987-av says:

The difference is that Dr. Emilio Lizardo is a well-respected commenter on here that we actually like. On the other hand, there’s really nothing that an “impostor” Recognitions could say that could possibly make him any shittier than the real one. Hell, this one might even end up being an improvement!

          • recognitions-av says:

Remember a few days ago when you went on a multi-paragraph rant because someone dared to suggest we be considerate to disabled people

          • returning-the-screw-av says:

That’s not what happened, moron. All I said was that it’s stupid that people bitched about a policy that wasn’t even real about no chairs being on set. And how stupid it was to think Nolan wouldn’t allow disabled people to sit. I said I had no empathy for people that weren’t allowed to sit on their jobs if it were true.

          • recognitions-av says:

Nah you spent half your rant whining about how “everything’s ableist now” because heaven forbid we pay more attention to the difficulties that disabilities cause people

          • returning-the-screw-av says:

No. Moron. I was talking about people calling it ableist when it wasn’t because only morons would think if it was tweak Nolan wouldn’t have provisions for people thar needed to sit.

          • recognitions-av says:

“I’m really starting to hate this accusing people of being “ableist”
thing for just about anything. Call somebody a moron? I’m an ableist.”Those were your exact words.

          • returning-the-screw-av says:

Yeah, you illiterate moron, ‘for anything’. Like Nolan supposedly not having chairs and thinking he wouldn’t let people that needed to sit down.

          • recognitions-av says:

So you took one example and extrapolated it to mean that we care too much about disabled people. Not sure I agree with your police work there, Lou.

          • returning-the-screw-av says:

Well, that proves you’re a moron. It happens plenty.

Are you comparing yourself being disliked for being an insufferable asshole to people ostracized for race, sexual preference, or religion? How dare you. You should be ashamed. • recognitions-av says:

Boy you sure sound defensive of bullying

Boy you sure sound insensitive and oblivious

          • recognitions-av says:

You’re running around defending impostor accounts and calling other people insensitive?

          • wuthanytangclano-av says:

You’re running around constantly baselessly accusing other people of racism and sexism and you’re calling other people bullies? You’re running around comparing people not liking your bullshit opinions to being ostracized and you think you’re not insensitive? And this is just another baseless accusation you’ve made, because I’ve never defended this imposter account, I just don’t care if a troll gets trolled.

          • recognitions-av says:

I mean if you think calling out racism and sexism is a thing to bully people about you may be part of a larger problem. It speaks to the level of privilege around here that the mere mention of oppression is considered worthy of ostracism.
You have made several comments responding to people who disapprove of imposter accounts making it clear you think it’s ok for them to impersonate me. Try not talking if you want to look like you don’t care about something.

          • wuthanytangclano-av says:

that’s the thing, you’re not “calling out racism and sexism” you’re baselessly accusing people of it because you’re a bully and a troll. You don’t “merely mention oppression”, you baselessly accuse others of it because you’re a bully and a troll.

          • recognitions-av says:

Boy, for someone who hates baseless accusations, you sure just made a whole bunch of them!

          • recognitions-av says:

Ok, you realize that doesn’t work, right? Like, there’s nothing baseless about the comment you replied to. You literally made a whole bunch of accusations about me with nothing to back them up, all the while ranting about how you hate baseless accusations. That’s literally what you did. I mean, maybe I’ve got you all wrong and this is a bit? That sure would be less embarrassing than the breathtaking hypocrisy and lack of self-awareness you’re displaying here.

          • wuthanytangclano-av says:

Except that your accusation that my accusations are baseless, is baseless, because a simple look at your commenting history as all the evidence anyone needs. See the circle we’re making here? Also, don’t accuse someone of hypocrisy when you’re stewing in it. You’re a pathetic troll and a bully and you know it. Try some of that self-awareness on yourself.

          • recognitions-av says:

And you double down on the baseless accusations. Seriously, if this is a bit, I’d leave it out of your tight five.

          • wuthanytangclano-av says:

Haven’t made a baseless accusation myself yet on the AV Club, can’t say the same about you. However, you lack the ability to look at yourself realistically and reflectively, so we’ll just leave it at this: you are a bully and a troll, and that is why you won’t find any sympathy for being trolled.

          • recognitions-av says:

You say you haven’t made baseless accusations and then you literally make some in the next sentence. You’re going to make yourself sick chasing your own tail like this.

          • wuthanytangclano-av says:

I won’t be replying to the bully and troll recognitions any further because he will distort logic as much as possible to make himself think he won an argument. The point has been made, he is a bully and a coward. Curious, no AVC commenters seem to star any of his comments, what a winner.

          • recognitions-av says:

So you don’t actually have anything to back up your accusations. It’s almost like they’re baseless. Which is, again, exactly what you accused me of doing. But I get it, you can’t take the heat.

People can’t stand you because you act like such a self-righteous asshole all the time. And unfortunately, for as long as this is the way you choose to portray yourself, nobody’s ever going to truly like you. I’m not even sure if that’s something that matters to you, though. You might very well just be on here for the perverse joy you get from concern trolling, and if that’s the case, then that’s just plain sad.

          • recognitions-av says:

I didn’t know you spoke for the entire site! I’m sure that attitude will make you very popular with everyone who doesn’t agree with every one of your perspectives. But until then, I can’t say your baseless accusations are terribly convincing. Guess you’re just a hypocrite.

          • boner-of-a-lonely-heart-1987-av says:

I’m not claiming to speak for the entire site, that would be impossible. But based on the sample group of this comment section, it certainly appears a large number of people on here dislike you, and for good reason. To try to argue otherwise would be downright delusional. Notice that not a single person has come to your defense, which should probably tell you something about the way that you’re perceived around here!

          • recognitions-av says:

There’s like…five people in this thread. And based on the track record of most of them, I feel pretty secure in the idea that I don’t particularly want their approval. • boner-of-a-lonely-heart-1987-av says:

Not only are you blatantly putting words in my mouth, but the very notion of you of all people, miserable scold that you are, trying to claim anyone else is “pearl-clutching” is truly asinine. But hey, keep coming back. And we’ll keep right on ridiculing you! You certainly make a good laughingstock.

          • recognitions-av says:

Don’t pretend you haven’t made those same sentiments repeatedly. And it’s no surprise that a bully like you feels free to state openly that you’re going to continue to harass me. After all, that’s the only reaction you have to the fear that the world is passing you by triggers in you.

          • returning-the-screw-av says:

Only people like you who are actual morons.

          • recognitions-av says:

            Yawn

        • castigere-av says:

I’m unbelievably thrilled to find that there are so many others who find you the ass that I do. Whether you are Original Ass recognitions, or New Ass recognitions. It’s incredibly satisfying.I can only assume it’s also satisfying to you. As you make every effort to be the douchebag you are. You are a combative, derisive, puerile prig.  You make no effort to engage in legitimate discourse, and deserve no quarter.

          • recognitions-av says:

Hm, random guy I don’t know stops by to baselessly insult me. Trying to see why I should be affected by this, and failing.

          • castigere-av says:

Well.  There it is.  As I have had arguments with recognitions for years.  Have been chased around, even.  Its clear you’re some new jerk, just carrying on the name.  You have kept that faux unaffected airs, I see.

          • recognitions-av says:
          • castigere-av says:

            Thrilling.

          • recognitions-av says:

Sorry if you overestimated your own importance

      • dead-elvis-av says:

there’s really nothing that an “impostor” Recognitions could say that could possibly make him any shittier than the real one. Hell, this one might even end up being an improvement! The real recognitions doesn’t find The Far Side funny, so his impersonator couldn’t be worse.

        • galvatronguy-av says:

I don’t think they believe humor should be allowed to exist— so it’s extremely on brand

          • jimisawesome-av says:

Most humor can be offensive to someone especially a humorless scold.

          • dead-elvis-av says:

True, true. He seems like a miserable pud. I’m assuming he sticks around here because it’s the only attention he gets – can’t imagine anyone IRL wants to spend a second more than necessary with that.

      • sayshh89-av says:

        Very true.

      • wuthanytangclano-av says:

recognitions is dead. Long live recognItions

        • boner-of-a-lonely-heart-1987-av says:

This has to be the most active comment section I’ve seen on an AV Club article in months, and it’s almost entirely made up of people going off about how bad recognitions sucks! And just look at him down there. He’s staying up late, still individually responding to every single insult and delusionally convincing himself that he’s “won the argument”.

      • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I know not everyone here is a big fan of recognitions, but I think setting up impostor troll accounts of existing commenters is a shitty thing to do no matter who they are.

    • returning-the-screw-av says:

New? Recognitions has been an insufferable twat.

    • wuthanytangclano-av says:

A troll impersonating a troll, who cares?

    • callmecarlosthedwarf-av says:

It’s the same account as “Doctor Butt” or whatever.

  • batista_thumbs_up-av says:

This is so horrible (as with the tragic drowning of former WWE’er Shad Gaspard, I am at least relieved the child was alive), and yikes, the curse of Glee is becoming the stuff of Hollywood nightmares.

    • newdaesim-av says:

I picture Ryan Murphy sitting in an expensive but uncomfortable looking chair in a massive, sterile looking living room, watching local coverage about this and smirkingly considering creating an F/X miniseries emtitled: The curse of Glee.

      • batista_thumbs_up-av says:

On top of the deaths/arrests in the cast, I forgot Julia Roberts’ sister worked on the show and killed herself, and made sure to place the blame on Julia in her suicide letter for driving her over the edge.

        • smithsfamousfarm-av says:

Jesus effing Christ. My gf watched Glee back in the day and therefore, I kinda watched it too. I never much cared for it but it really is uncanny what has befallen the cast and crew of that show in the ensuing years. I’m nearly convinced that there will be an American Horror Story: Glee in a year or two.

        • raymarrr-av says:

          Jeez, that’s horrible.

        • gotpma-av says:

          Goddamn, that’s sad.

        • devoidofnuance-av says:

Wow. I had not heard of the like to the Roberts. Makes me wonder if Julia’s PR team had something to do with people not hearing about it, because that seems to have happened at a time (i.e., pre-Trump) where people would have noticed and paid attention.

          • batista_thumbs_up-av says:

There seems to be two consensus thoughts about Julia as a professional throughout the years: she is an absolute nightmare of a person to everyone around her and her PR team is VERY good at keeping that suppressed.

      • martincrane-av says:

One of the dumb as fuck things people bring up as “proof” of a curse is that Murphy’s son had cancer, so I doubt it.

      • jol1279-av says:

This kind of stuff will definitely end up being the plot for at least one American Horror Story.

      • tesseract0-av says:

Glee is going to have its own episode of “True Hollywood Stories” on E in a couple of years.

  • martincrane-av says:

Can everyone shut the fuck up about a cursed television show and let tragedy be tragedy? It doesn’t suddenly become funny because the person knew other people who suffered too.

    • apostkinjapocalypticwasteland-av says:

I get what you’re saying, but when I start thinking about that poor four year old I can’t even. Stupid jokes are distracting.

    • sickerthanmost-av says:

its the internet, not everyone copes with tragedy the same way. u seem upset but some people are doing their best to not let this horrible thing bring them down more. i’d recommend staying away from the comments.

      • martincrane-av says:

Yeah, I was just reacting emotionally for personal reasons. I really wish I could delete comments.

    • harleyquinnpleasechokeme-av says:

I don’t think most people talking about a curse are doing it to be funny or disrespectful. In fact, my first thought when I saw this was “Jesus, this cast might as well be cursed”. Not as a joke, but more like “I know curses aren’t real, but this cast has had such an unusually high rate of personal tragedy that it FEELS like a curse.” I hope I explained that coherently, it’s a sad situation

  • unique-identifier68-av says:

hope lea michele’s got a good alibi.

  • Nitelight62-av says:

In the years since Glee ended in 2015, Rivera has released a memoir and starred on the YouTube series Step Up: High Water.
Well, in retrospect that seems unfortunate…..

  • returning-the-screw-av says:

Holy crap. That kid is lucky to have gotten back on that boat. Pretty impressive for a four year old. Before I read that part I was going to say it was impressive he stayed on.

    • kantsmasher-av says:

I have a four year old and he’s useless when it comes to lifting himself on to things. Can barely lift a cup to his mouth. Arms like spaghetti, or, like a four year old. Extremely impressive this tyke could not only lift himself up, but stayed still in the boat for an indeterminate period of time. I hope his mum is found. This is all pretty awful.

      • rauth1334-av says:

uh what? young kids tend to have an excess of body strength to their size.

        • kantsmasher-av says:

Chill. I’m not querying the veracity of the details. Merely commenting that I’m doubtful my child could accomplish this. I am relieved. If you doubt me, then challenge my son to a fight. My money is on you to win.I’d also note that it has since been revealed that the boat was a pontoon and thus a bit easier to climb into.

          • eresungringotonto-av says:

Of course an adult would beat a 4yo child in a fight.

          • rauth1334-av says:

pontoons can be impossible to climb into if they are empty.my experience is the presidential fitness tests we used to do in elementary school. the small girls especially could do great on pull ups and the arm hang.

          • kantsmasher-av says:

It’s a great enough feat that those girls at your elementary school could do the arm hang. To hear that they were also presidents at such a young age makes me have to suspend my disbelief. Excellent work kids!

    • capeo-av says:

From recent reports it sounds like she helped him onto the boat at an earlier point but either stayed in the water or went back in. Her son said she was trying to swim back to the boat but couldn’t make it. The lake is a bit notorious for drownings. It’s a man made reservoir and the geography of the lake bottom can make for strong currents that aren’t obvious at the surface, currents that can upwell very cold water as well, and even whirlpools at times. It sounds like a current separated her from the boat somehow and she couldn’t make it back. It’s just awful all around.

  • docnemenn-av says:

Sweet Jesus, this is awful. That poor woman and her poor family.

  • drpumernickelesq-av says:

This whole thing is tragic. I can’t stop thinking about that poor little kid, alone and scared and confused on the boat. Heartbreaking and awful.

    • spursgo23-av says:

How about her?! You panic, realizing you’re going under….maybe you know your kid is safe, maybe you don’t. Just horrifying.

      • drpumernickelesq-av says:

Oh, I know! I’m definitely not trying to take anything away from that part of the tragedy. As a parent of a young child myself, I can’t even fathom.

  • jmg619-av says:

I wonder if we’ll hear from Lea Michele about this. I’m not sure if those two ever saw eye to eye. They sure made it believable on the show. Wonder if those two did hate each other in the real world.

  • cthonicmnemonic-av says:

This has somehow managed to compete for the darkest thing to happen in 2020.  It’s so bleak it’s almost poetic in a terrible way, like the beginning of an epic story, a foundling, hopefully that epic tale is this little guy’s.

  • wiscoproud-av says:

    That’s so incredibly sad.

  • tigersblood-av says:

Jeez this is horrible. Poor kid.

Look, people, if you don’t think you need a PFD that is your first indication that you should put on your damn PFD.

    • tshepard62-av says:

It’s great that she wanted to spend some time with her child, all too often we hear stories of neglect, but the best advice to others at this point is if you’re going to do something like this try your hardest to bring another adult along with you.  While you usually end up having a great time spent with your child there are other things that can happen, most of them are bad.

  • John--W-av says:

    Jesus. I hope she’s okay.

  • sr337-av says:

Plot twist: police have found Lea Michelles fingerprints all over the boat.

  • deeeeznutz-av says:

As a father of kids ages 3 (for 5 more days) and 5, I am just absolutely heartbroken reading this story. I can’t even imagine the fear, sadness, and every other emotion you could think of that that boy was going through on the boat before he was rescued. God please provide peace and comfort to that family.

  • fleiter69-av says:

Weird story. Why would she rent a boat to go swimming with a 4-year-old?

  • zaxby1979-av says:

For some reason the Avril Lavigne song Head Above Water is in my mind.

  • krinj-av says:

  • TRT-X-av says:

Her final tweet was from like a day earlier with her and her son and I was never a fan of Glee but seeing that after reading the news was still a punch in the goddamn gut.Thank god her child made it. If we want to look for small miracles at a time like this.

  • adventurepig-av says:

Please wear life jackets people, don’t think because you’re an adult you’re immune to drowning. I don’t know if she was wearing one but they are so easy to wear and can stop tragedies like this. Horrible news. I hope she is found safe. Thank god the kid is ok.

    • apostkinjapocalypticwasteland-av says:

No kidding. Just wear a life jacket, for Christ’s sake. ESPECIALLY when you have your kid with you. And to not have a life jacket on your kid? Inexcusable. Way too high a price to pay.

      • adventurepig-av says:

It’s also illegal. In CA every child under 13 must be wearing a lifejacket while boating. Why they dont extend it to everyone is beyond me.

  • robgrizzly-av says:

    Fuck. This is awful.

  • keepcalmporzingis-av says:

Can someone explain how one can just drown in a lake when a 4 yr old can make it back into the boat( presuming she can swim and I believe she took her life vest off before she went in)… just curious how that happens

  • arrowe77-av says:

Poor kid! So young and he already has to live through a tragedy.

  • wondercles-av says:

At this point, I’m just waiting for Jane Lynch to spontaneously combust.

  • evilbutdiseasefree-av says:

So sad. Didn’t like Glee but you have to give Ryan Murphy credit for this: He has good taste in actors. Everyone on Glee was at least solid. Thankful the kid is okay, physically at least.

    • robgrizzly-av says:

I mainly liked the first season, but Naya’s role was smaller then. Santana Lopez would get more substantial material in later years. Her standout performance to me was her duet/duel with Grant Gustin for “Smooth Criminal.”

    • apostkinjapocalypticwasteland-av says:

Of course they were solids. Founders wouldn’t lower themselves to be on Fox.

  • bootooth-av says:

Man this sounds kinda fishy to me. Who jumps into a lake like that without a life jacket, especially when the only other person present is their 4 year old son?
