Netflix titles come, go, and come back again, so it’s important not to wait too long to stream a title that you like because it won’t be there indefinitely. The elder streaming service has a generous selection of science fiction and fantasy movies, including the new family-friendly title Chupa, about a lonely young boy who befriends a mythical creature known as a chupacabra while visiting family in Mexico.
2011’s The Thing, a prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing, didn’t get much love when it premiered in theaters but is now trending on Netflix. Other notable titles include the hilarious sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest, the Oscar-winning Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Brad Pitt in the apocalyptic zombie flick World War Z, Christopher Nolan’s Inception, J.A. Bayona’s A Monster Calls, and many more. Read on for Netflix’s best sci-fi and fantasy movies and The A.V. Club’s thoughts on each.

Second plug for Inception. Tomorrow’s list: “Best movies about dreams to watch on Netflix right now”
Yes most movies compared to the book suck…..World War Z is AWFUL
and the book was so good! just film the book!!
The Thing 2011 was ignored cos it was rubbish. A limp retread of the original film, with less tension and more ropey CGI (forced by a studio that got cold feet over the predominant practical FX)
PJ’s King Kong is one of the most over bloated movies ever made. There’s a great 1 hour 45 minute King Kong movie in there that wants to escape. First thing I’d get rid of is the brontosaurus stampede.
Galaxy Quest is a classic. World War Z isn’t really worth seeing, despite the excellent special effects.
I did not think that I would end up liking Galaxy Quest this much or King Kong this little.Sidebar, if you please: Why does every single expedition setting foot on Skull Island think: “Wow, a giant gorilla, now that is a marvel that I MUST transport home posthaste for viewing by well-dressed people” and also “still-living dinsosaurs and their ilk, I could not give a single fuck and will never mention them again”?
Gotta save something for the sequel. The sequel to Kong on Broadway, of course.
Second time this week I’ve been reminded of that 2011 version of The Thing. I’ll probably give it a try. I like the idea of seeing what led up to that dog running into Kurt Russell’s camp. Well, I know what led up to it, obviously.
Skip it. It is nonessential.

It’s worth noting that Pitch Black is basically a remake of Stagecoach, with Diesel stepping into John Wayne’s shoes.
