It’s Valentine’s Day, and Netflix has a special gift for all the starry-eyed romance lovers in the crowd: Bridgerton is coming back for its third season on May 16, and the streamer just dropped a ton of information about what’s coming for the series’ next hot couple.

After two seasons of steamy enemies-to-lovers plot lines, season three—which follows the courtship between long-time companions Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton)—will be the show’s first where we’re already familiar with both leads. “Usually we’re meeting a new person who’s falling in love with one of our regulars, but this time, we know the people who are falling in love,” said executive producer Shonda Rhimes during a panel at a fan event this week. “We’re already rooting for them because we already know them, and I’m excited for that.”

“I think also Colin and Penelope are underdogs in many ways,” added season three showrunner Jess Brownell. “You have Penelope, the perennial wallflower, and you have Colin, who’s the third son, who hasn’t quite found himself, and we get to see these characters step into their power this year, which I think will make a lot of people who’ve ever had an unrequited crush or feel like an underdog before feel very seen.”

Over the first two seasons, we learn that Penelope—a.k.a. Regency London society’s gossip girl, Lady Whistledown—has nursed a lifelong crush on Colin, before overhearing him say he’d never court her in the finale of season two. A newly released clip from the first episode of the season sees Penelope finally putting Colin in his place in exactly the way fans of the book this season is based on, Romancing Mister Bridgerton, dreamed.
