Netflix is making a tie-in movie for Last Kingdom, its viking show that is not Vikings: Valhalla

Last Kingdom will already tie everything up with a final season next year, but now it's also getting a bonus movie

One of the great things about Netflix’s ridiculous and vast library of content is that—without having to worry about time slots or whatever like HBO—it can sit on a seemingly endless supply of fan-favorite TV shows without needing (or ever trying to, really) force them in front of the general public. One such show is long-running viking series The Last Kingdom, which Netflix just announced will be getting a bonus tie-in movie in addition to its previously announced fifth-and-final season.

This news came out during London MCM Comic-Con (via Deadline), during which producer Nigel Marchant explained that the final season “fully concludes the series” but that “there was always one more story that we wanted to tell” in addition to that. That “one more story” is the movie, which is called Seven Kings Must Die and will feature “many of the series cast” in addition to “some new faces.”

The one familiar face we know we will see is series star/executive producer Alexander Dreymon, who will be reprising his role as Uhtred. He said at the con that he’s “so grateful” to the show’s fans and the fact that they’re getting a chance to throw in this bonus movie on top of the actual series finale is entirely because of their support.

The Last Kingdom and Seven Kings Must Die are based on Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories. They are not, despite any evidence that say otherwise, related to the History show Vikings or that show’s century-later follow-up series Vikings: Valhalla, despite the fact that they cover similar historical ground and the fact that the latter is also a Netflix show. That’s the other thing: HBO would never have Game Of Thrones and then a second dragon-based fantasy show, but Netflix can have two viking shows and nobody has a problem with it.

I prefer Last Kingdom. Vikings is a bit much for me.

I prefer the Netflix show Norsemen, probably more historically accurate and a lot funnier. The third season was a prequel.

I prefer Norsemen , which is half as long but twice as funny (and yet just as bloody)

Norsemen started well, it was funny and refreshing, but burned through its ideas and – crucially – its jokes before the end of the first season. The second season was a recycled slog, without the humour to take the edge off the repellent characters. I couldn’t watch season 3 … maybe the whole prequel thing paid off eventually, or maybe it was just as it appeared, ie the desperate result of a show with zero ideas left having written itself into a hole . I wouldn’t know, i bailed before the end of the second episode.

I like that the Vikings The Last Kingdom are pretty cool, but they’re not like the most awesome, totally radical people to ever exist, like they’re depicted in so much media.

Vikings was great, until Ragnar died, then it jumped all the medieval sharks.(apologies for the 1000 year old spoiler).

I agree. I liked the first few seasons of Vikings, but dropped it after the Siege of Paris. The Last Kingdom just kept getting better.

Yeah TLK doesn’t shoot for the thematic depth that Vikings has reached for at times, but that also means it doesn’t fail like Vikings usually did

Vikings Valhalla will suck ass just like everything past the point where Ragnar’s gone. And everything on Netflix is questionable quality at best.

What’s most important is that they keep on saying “Hump” every time they talk about sex.  It never ceases to amuse me everytime they say it.

The Last Kingdom is one of the best shows on TV, period. That is not hyperbole, if you haven’t seen it, it’s that good.

This is a pretty good, watchable show. It aired first on BBC Two, so no way is it a Netflix original.

  • bericdondarrion-av says:

The great writing and pacing made the low budget campy costumes easy to ignore.  In more recent seasons the costumes have gotten a bit better.

It’s better than Vikings, and it’s also not a Viking show. It’s literally about the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and unlike Vikings, it’s based on real historical writings. This is like calling 30 Rock NBC’s “other show about a TV show”.

HBO could have another show with dragons, but not one with a mediocre cast, mediocre writing and a severe case of Bridgerton.
