Netflix had the option of downloading episodes of TV shows on your phone for a while but now it’s introducing something new.
This week, Netflix launched Downloads For You, a feature that lets you automatically downloads recommendations based on your interests. So you could either end up with a bunch of junk you don’t like, or you could potentially find your new favorite TV show. It’s an obvious ploy to get people to watch Netflix’s countless releases, but at least it beats not having any form of entertainment when the internet’s out or when you’re (eventually) stuck on a flight with mediocre viewing options.
You can modify your limit of gigabytes so Netflix won’t take over the space on your phone, if that’s something you’re concerned about. Green text box people have the advantage of the feature already being available on Android globally. But don’t worry, iPhone users – it’ll be tested on iOS soon.

Is this an American thing because Netflix in the UK has allowed downloads of whatever you want for years.
We’ve had it for years too. This appears to be something new. It’s such an oddly-written writeup that I’m not sure if the author truly understands what’s being reported.
Going by the Netflix page, it’s merely a new thing that lets Netflix download semi-random unsolicited stuff that it thinks that you will maybe like. Not sure what problem this is solving. I’ve never had an empty queue. Does anyone?
Yeah; I don’t think the author understands what they’ve been asked to write about; they compare netflix’s (already real, and free) offline viewing option to the ability to purchase content on iTunes. It’s been possible to download on the netflix app for offline viewing for a while now, though certain movies and shows have been unavailable for download. This, however, seems like a marketing ploy; Netflix dumps a few suggested shows/movies on your phone, and hopefully next time you’re on the bus you’ll try watching something you wouldn’t have otherwise.
I’ve never had an empty queue. Does anyone? When COVID-19 was still new-ish, I jokingly tweeted that “all it took for me to get through my Netflix queue was a global pandemic.”The joke was on me. My queue is longer now.
The American version is like the British version, but louder and dumber.
Yes, we’ve been able to download them for a while in the U.S. The difference now is Netflix will AUTOMATICALLY do this based on your recommendations if you allow it.
In France too. If you watch an episode of your show, when you get back on wifi it’ll download the next episode of that show and then delete the one you just watched automagically.
That’s… incredibly annoying. If I understand this correctly, the capability is there, but they won’t allow users to access it because they want to leverage it for their own marketing purposes. If I’m a user who is desperate to get Netflix platformed content onto my phone, isn’t that enough? This setup makes me even less likely to want to engage with them via mobile device.
You should definitely visit the Netflix link and read more. This AVClub write-up does not accurately describe… anything.
Thanks for the heads up. Whatever I am reading here does not make sense to me.
“Huh, why is Rattle and Hum suddenly on my iPhone?”
