Bean, Elfo, Luci, and the rest of Dreamland will return to Netflix next month for a new installment of Disenchantment, Matt Groening’s increasingly delightful medieval romp. On January 15, the streamer will premiere the first chunk of season 2, a.k.a. part 3, a.k.a. the first new Disenchantment episodes in more than a year.

“Bean must step up her princess game amid royal plots, deepening mysteries, King Zøg’s increasing instability, and concerns about who will rule Dreamland,” reads a synopsis, which arrives alongside a new trailer for the series teasing evil plots, bad trips, and new worlds (Steamland!).

Watch it below:

Abbi Jacobson, Eric Andre, and Nat Faxon reprise their roles as the series’ core trio, with the storied likes of John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, and Matt Berry rounding out the voice cast.

Neat. I’ve been looking forward to this. I wasn’t completely sold on the series for a few epidodes, but then I just relaxed and let the hooks to their work.

I genuinely thought this show was cancelled and am happy to see that’s not the case.

  • murrychang-av says:

Jeeze I only vaguely remember what happened already.  I remember it being reasonably funny and entertaining but nothing special…?

Yeah, I’ll have to rewatch. I feel like that’s an endemic problem with the current age of TV – they love cliffhangers more than ever (which makes it both harder and more necessary to keep track of many different plot and character threads), but with more and more time between seasons, it becomes almost impossible to just jump back in. When shows basically had standalone two-parters to latch onto, it was easy – it’s not too much to remember that (um, spoilers, I guess?) Picard was assimilated and the crew wanted to get him back, or someone shot Mr. Burns, or President Bartlet was going to announce whether he’d run again, for just three or four summer months. But asking us to keep close track of many different threads at the same time (that were established in a much shorter time, which is usually binged) for over a year seems like a much heavier lift, and one that few shows really warrant.

At this point, I sometimes would rather just not watch a show until it’s done to avoid exactly that problem. Once it’s finished, I’ll just binge all four seasons or whatever and not worry about keeping tabs on every little thing, and I’ll be the happier for it. (Even if that means the year-by-year ratings suck.)

For me it depends on how good it is.  I remember exactly where The Expanse left off at the end of the last season because I really enjoy the show.  I watched Disenchanted, I know that, so if I would have really enjoyed it I would remember what happened last lol

I do that for the most part but for a different reason. I got tired of investing time into shows that were unceremoniously cancelled before a proper ending, so for the most part I generally avoid new, multi-season shows until they’re near the end or have a solid enough following that staying on is likely. Happy to jump into anthologies or mini-series right away. And I do make exceptions for networks with a history of letting shows with good reviews stay on despite ratings. You’d think with the shift to streaming, this would happen less. Because streaming companies like Netflix capitalize their shows as long-term assets and they should understand that incomplete shows are garbage assets. But they are as bad as regular networks at this point.

The last few years i’ve been busy writing and working and with most of life put on hold due to the pandemic I ended up watching a bunch of shows I wanted to finally see. Crashing through 3 seasons of Discovery, 6 of Bosch, Picard, and I’ll be doing the Mandalorian next. I’m with you on this, I’m still frustrated by GLOW being dropped without a 4th season.

I would really prefer a 20 episode run of a show anymore, tell a hefty sized story, effectively 2 seasons with maybe a 3 month break before releasing the 2nd half then if it is popular enough buy them out for another 20 episode run, that way you atleast have a sizable watch library for the cost, everybody bought in at a lower price, and if you get a big hit like a Bojack Horseman or Mandalorian you’re not waiting a year for them to film 10 more hours of TV that will burn up in a few weeks/months.

          • akabrownbear-av says:

lol I also watched all six seasons of Bosch due to the pandemic. Then got five of my friends to binge it too because it was great. Surprised I had never heard much about it from anyone I know before. And yea haven’t watched Mandalorian either yet but that’s more because I’m holding off on getting D+ until the first MCU show is out next year. That show was so massively popular last year that I can’t imagine it’s getting cancelled without some sort of proper ending, especially since Disney is creating multiple spin-offs of it already.

          • bogira-av says:

Bosch definitely is a throwback show and I love it. I’ve been watching it with my dad who was a 20 year vet of the police force and he’s reminiscing about it all.  It’s been cathartic for him.  I’m going to get D+ when I cut the cord.  I can’t justify more than 3 streams.

It’s just really well done. The cast is good (always nice to see The Wire alum on shows), the season long mysteries are fun and interesting, and they capture LA really well. Most shows make LA seem like a paradise or a wasteland instead of a real city. Bosch presents it like it actually is which is nice to see.

Pixar’s Soul comes to Disney+ on Xmas Day.

      • dougr1-av says:

That’s why most of them have a “previously on:” at the beginning.

    • bringerofpie-av says:

At first, I thought I was misreading things and this was actually a Season 2 trailer, because I don’t remember a Season 2 happening. But apparently I did watch Season 2. I can’t tell if this is a problem with the show or if 9 months of quarantine have turned my head to mush. (And here they said it would be TV that would turn my head to mush!)

    • rogueindy-av says:

On the one hand, same; on the other, I’m really looking forward to more. idk if that says more about me or the show.

    • lordoftheducks-av says:

I forgot this show existed until now; probably due to a mix of the show’s mediocrity and 2020.

  • thesunmaker-av says:

A thudding meh, after the highs of Simpsons and Futurama; is it my imagination or have most Netflix own brand sitcoms been constant flops?

  • glancy-av says:

There’s some good stuff here, but I don’t really feel like Disenchantment has a love for fantasy the way Futurama adored science fiction or Venture Bros. was obsessed with comic books and ‘60s adventurer fiction. With those shows it’s like they couldn’t wait to show you the next convention they were going to riff on, yet they kept producing genuinely impressive examples of the very genre they spoofed. In Disenchantment it all just feels kind of surface to me — some decent jokes and characters in a fantasy world that the writers seem indifferent to, as opposed to one they can’t wait to explore. Would love to be proven wrong with this next batch of shows though.

    • bogira-av says:

Matt Groening has a good sense of writing fun characters but he only has a few seasons worth of writing in him on any show. Disenchantment has too much story to tell to get bogged down in the fantasy tropes and Futurama could afford more throwaway gags because both of the episodic nature and the total episode count a season. I think it ranks up there with golden era Simpsons and definitely has its place alongside Futurama.

    • luasdublin-av says:

well… Thanks to a freeze frame Easter egg its technically a Futurama spin off!

    • ryanlohner-av says:

It also oddly sometimes succumbs to Seltzer-Friedberg syndrome of spoofing a big fantasy thing like Game of Thrones, without seeming to realize that very same joke already exists in the original.

  • marshalgrover-av says:

I will honestly admit I don’t think I even made it through the first batch of episodes.

    • cartagia-av says:

The second batch was way better if that helps any.

      • ikeikeikeike-av says:

I’m with It’s-a-Shane on this. I found that first batch mostly very disappointing. There isn’t a story arc, is there? I can just skip ahead to the second batch, right?

        • v-kaiser-av says:

No it actually has a pretty significant story arc. It still plays out episodically in a way, but there’s more and more of the overarching plot in each episode as it continues. As the show started to focus more on that it got a lot better. I think there’s some good moments in the first few episodes, but they’re definitely rough. The show picks up a lot around episode 5 where Bean becomes an intern with the castle executioner/torturer, but if you just want to get some of the story and move ahead to the (much much better) season 2, just watch the pilot, jump to episode 8 and go from there.
I found it really makes the show a lot better if you don’t try to think of it as the “Fantasy Futurama” it was billed at, because it really never tries to be. It isn’t really a sitcom and its just not as focused on genre jokes (beyond just pointing out the silliness of its own premise) and it allows for more character growth than Futurama did.

        • rogueindy-av says:

There is very much a story arc.

        • cartagia-av says:

There’s actually like a ton of story, but I think that if you just watch the finale of Part 1 you should be ok.

  • coolmanguy-av says:

    Looks good

  • brickstarter-av says:

After all the much better shows Netflix has canceled, I’m surprised this is still on.

  • luasdublin-av says:

Richard Ayoade! Its getting closer to an IT crowd reunion!

  • refinedbean-av says:

This is the show I put on when I’m coming down from a good smoke and just want to finish a game on my Switch and need something on in the background. Now and then I look up and give it a minute to do something funny. It never does, and I go back to my game. It’s my kind of boring, is what I’m saying.

  • dougr1-av says:

Finally more of the steampunk world!
