If you, like Julie Andrews’ Lady Whistledown, are a messy bitch who lives for the drama, perhaps you’ll enjoy spending 2020's socially distanced Christmas in Bridgerton. Bridgerton, the first of Shonda Rhimes’ many soon-to-debut Netflix productions, brings its scandal-ridden period romance to the streamer on Christmas Day. Today, it received a steamy new trailer.

Adapted from Julia Quinn’s popular novels, the series counts Rhimes as an executive producer and Scandal’s Chris Van Dusen as its creator. Phoebe Dynevor stars as Daphe Bridgerton, whose debut onto Regency London’s “marriage market” is plagued by creeps and weirdos. Enter the “highly desirable and rebellious” Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), who helps Daphe concoct a scheme to free them both from the dated traditions of their elders. But alas, it is scientifically impossible for two people this beautiful to meet and not fall in love. Overseeing it all is Andrews’ Lady Whistledown, whose “high society scandal sheet” keeps everyone on their toes.

Watch the trailer below:

Jonathan Bailey, Nicola Coughlan, Claudia Jessie, Ruby Barker, and Adjoa Andoh round out the cast of the 8-episode series. Prepare your corsets for Christmas Day.

Y’know, for once, I’d like to one of these accurately. Just fuck the projected 21st-century romantic notions right off, and do it actually period accurately.Everyone dies of scrofula, someone beats one of the help to death, and the ladies spend all their time powdering their faces with the finest lead.

Oh lord, this is basically catnip for my wife. She’s all-in on pretty much any period piece, I can’t wait to show her this trailer.

Is this a show Julie Stiles will be embarrassed about? Because the link is on the homepage three times, including two right by each other.

So today is the 14th? That means this article will sit on the top of AVClub for about 10 more days until Christmas.

    It looks amazing.  Breeches, drool

Where there really Black people just walking around attending soirees and shit in the UK in that time period? I know England abolished slavery 30 years before the US but this movie seems a bit of stretch. Also the women being happy and walking around free is kind of off too.

    • blue2084-av says:

There were in fact. The first black British person to vote in Parliamentary elections, which required being a decently wealthy property owner, did so in 1774.

Not in a historically-accurate sense, no. But this sort of thing has been the Hollywood norm for a while now – a diverse cast gives them license to keep filming movies and shows that obsess over the decadent lives of filthy-rich elites from previous centuries. Being aware of how racist and classist those societies were can get in the way of vicariously enjoying their opulence.

    • dirtside-av says:

Eh, just think about how often Hollywood has whitewashed history, erasing the lives, contributions, and views of people of color. I think we can survive a handful of productions that do the opposite.

    • bennyboy56-av says:

Not really, but unfortunately it’s part of the modern drive for diversity no matter how unrealistic it is.

    • liebkartoffel-av says:

On the one hand, probably not, no. On the other hand, who cares? It’s fiction. It might surprise you to learn that there wasn’t actually a historical figure named “Lady Whistledown” who happened to look exactly like Julie Andrews.

      • operasara-av says:

Exactly.  There also weren’t all those young and sexy dukes.  Dukes were crusty old dudes because every male in your family had to die before you got the title.

    • miked1954-av says:

The UK has had several decades of color blind casting under it belt.

  • kca204-av says:

***SPOILER ALERT***I wonder how they are going to play the pretty dubious consent scene that they had in “The Duke and I.” I read that book years and years ago and even then, I was like this don’t seem right somehow . . .

  • miked1954-av says:

The corset thing confused me, as everyone seems to be dressed in regency gowns that gather under the bosom.

  • augustintrebuchon-av says:

I wonder what age group this is targeted at? Because the “I am not interested in you” line tells me all that I’d possibly care to know about the series.
