We’ll be honest: The new trailer for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad released earlier today—less than a week after the first full trailer for the August-set supervillain spectacular—has less new footage than we’d usually like when highlighting a trailer. There’s the same shots of King Shark (Sylvester Stallone, against all odds) cutely raising his hand; the same deadpan bits with David Dastmalchian as Polka Dot Man; the same high-intensity threatening of Peter Capaldi’s Thinker by Joel Kinnaman, Idris Elba, and Margot Robbie.

Still, though: The new trailer (named “Rebellion,” in reference to the moody speech that kicks it off) does have enough new tidbits to get us excited. We actually get to see Dastmalchian hit people with polka dots, for instance, and plenty of shots of Daniela Melchior summoning her rats as, well, Ratcatcher. Oh, and John Cena getting to bust out his comedy chops as Peacemaker, declaring that he loves peace so much that he doesn’t care “how many men, women, or children I need to kill to get it.”

The real reason we’re writing this up, though, is the simple fact that this is the first glimpse we’re getting at Nathan Fillion’s character, the enigmatic “T.D.K.”, in action, and by action, we mean showing off his weird-ass detachable arms. There’s been plenty of speculation that Fillion is playing a version of classic bad superhero Arm-Fall-Off Boy (with the power…of detachable limbs!), and this is certainly evidence to that effect. It’s not a long glimpse, mind you, but when it comes to well-liked genre actors cosplaying as Phantom Limb from The Venture Brothers while Michael Rooker looks on in confusion, we’ll take what we can get.

Okay, that looks much flashier. The first trailer seemed a wee bit rough.

Just gonna remind people that this movie is still missing Snowflame, the greatest DC supervillains. His powers come from cocaine.

  • tokenaussie-av says:

Nathan Fillion already has a superhero role, dammit….fucking tourists…

Gonna laugh if the trailer is a misdirect and what we’re actually seeing is his death scene.Like, his arms are cut off by something just as he’s about to dramatically reveal his powers.

I think this is pretty much what we’re seeing. I think he shows off his powers, he thinks this is going to be an awesome moment, instead his powers are dumb and everyone is “WTF???”, and he dies.

Yeah, it looks like he’s walking into a barrage of bullets with a “look at my awesome powers!” approach and ultimately dying. I get the feeling that the lead up will be him being super cocky about his powers and suit (it looks like one of the more refined “super” suits out of the bunch), so the reveal will make for a funny gag death. If this is the case, it’s sort of a bummer though because it’s a bit obvious and I feel like it’s a misuse of Fillion for a single joke. I’m not really a fan of superhero movies, but I still think he’s earned a role in at least one of the universes that isn’t a complete gag.

I agree. He seems to be stuck in the same rut that trapped Bruce Campbell i.e. beloved genre stalwarts that fit the hero mold too well and become a parody of it. At the end of the day they’ll both have had impressive careers, but get denied the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Yeah like I hate seeing him as a jobber y’know?

You had me at “Peter Capaldi snarkily narrating things.”  Here’s hoping his entree into superhero cinema works out a little better than poor Chris Eccleston’s.

Nathan Fillion stars as the audio cassette company TDK!!Another movie that I’ll wait for on HBO. In other news, Margot Robbie now insists on wearing formal evening wear instead of short-shorts.

  • c2three-av says:

I always suspected something uncanny about that Fillion guy. But I think I’ll just stick with Mystery Men for my intentionally unintentional laughs.

I honestly don’t understand how moviemakers still think CG > practical effects when it comes to a whole-ass character.
