Date night takes a terrifying turn in the first teaser for The Menu. Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult star as Margot and Tyler, a wealthy couple who have secured a reservation at an exclusive restaurant on a remote island.

As the finely plated dishes start to arrive at the table, Tyler finds himself moved to tears by the meal, while Margot is uneasy about her comparative disinterest. However, relationship issues turn out to be the least of their problems as the evening progresses.

Ralph Fiennes’ Chef Slowik is revealed to not just be the head of the restaurant, but something more like the leader of a culinary cult. When his staff members say “Yes, chef,” they’re also willing to kill for him.

“Over the next few hours, you will consume fat, salt, protein, and, at times, entire ecosystems,” Slowik promises in the teaser. As the tension ramps up, it doesn’t seem unlikely that the guests will also be consumed, alongside some very freaky-looking s’mores.

(How the customers find out about the restaurant when presumably fewer people come back than arrive on the island is anyone’s guess. What does mass murder do to a place’s Yelp rating?)

The Menu reunites a number of names from the Succession team, including director Mark Mylod, producer Adam McKay, and screenwriter Will Tracy, who co-wrote the script with Seth Reiss. In front of the camera, fans will recognize Rob Yang, who played Vaulter CEO Lawrence Yee on the acclaimed HBO drama. The film also co-stars Hong Chau, John Leguizamo, Judith Light, Janet McTeer, and Arturo Castro.

Taylor-Joy is already well-known for her horror roles, with projects like The Witch, Last Night In Soho, Split, and Glass in her filmography. The Menu’s teaser promises that Hoult will also get to flex his comedic chops, as he memorably has in The Favourite and The Great.

The Menu is set to hit theaters on November 18.

Cannibalism is in, we don’t even need the zombies anymore. I feel if themes in movies are indicative of the themes in the real world, this is a sad progression (with any hope people have being in the form of marvel heroes which become more and more corporate themselves). but this cast and aesthetic look delightful, and I hope it’s as fun as Fresh.

      Yes, Mr. Hammer.

    • gilbertgrady-av says:

Gotta work our way up to “Eat the rich” being not just a catchy slogan.

      • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

Eating the poor makes more practical sense though; they are numerous and unlikely to stir much of a response from the authorities.

        • gilbertgrady-av says:

Yes but eating the rich triggers a redistribution of wealth. Eat a man for a day, you’re fed for a day, eat a man whose wealth can feed the world, you’re fed for…whatever.

      • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

It wasn’t meant to be a mission statement!

    • boggardlurch-av says:

It might be argued that a shift from “we are afraid of a giant, faceless, all consuming other” towards “we are afraid of power and wealth hoarded within individuals whom cannot be trusted” is at least a little healthy.

    • noreallybutwait-av says:

Yeah I was just thinking, between this, and that “Fresh” movie with the Winter Soldier, and the most recent season of Atlanta, it sure seems like cannibalism is all the rage.

turns out, we never really needed the zombies

The gap between Anya Taylor-Joy and Elle Fanning continues to shrink. Soon we’ll see the rise of an all-powerful Anya Taylor-Fanning.

Samarelle Taylor-Fanning Weaving. Don’t forget the other triplet.

    • teageegeepea-av says:

I don’t think Fanning has done as much horror. There was Neon Demon, and that’s about it as far as I recall.Looking up the development history, ATJ is actually a replacement for a different former co-star of Hoult: Emma Stone. I don’t recall her doing any horror before.

      • teageegeepea-av says:

Also, it appears the writers of this film previously wrote for The Onion. No mention of that above. Is there no longer any brand synergy?

    • returning-the-screw-av says:

What if we added a Bryce Dallas Howard?

    • butterbattlepacifist-av says:

I really like Elle Fanning, but Anya Taylor Joy is just so far up there you can’t compare them like this dude

    • dirtside-av says:

They need to play elf princess sisters.

    • radarskiy-av says:

No, the gap between ATJ’s eyes is just as wide as ever.

Special preview:“Will you stop teasing the menu and just order please?!”

    • bigbydub-av says:

I’d like the…teaser menu. 7 exquisite little dishes, ‘tastes’ if you will, designed to keep your taste buds hovering on the brink of anticipation.

  • mirrorball-av says:

Fine dining thriller. Is that the new “it” genre?

  • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

between this and the upcoming hulu show ‘the bear’ we’re hitting new levels of food-content-that-looks-good.

  • norwoodeye-av says:

I will cop to gleefully giggling at the bergamot line and Fiennes’ reaction. And I will watch anything with Chau. Looks like fun.

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

Didn’t they do this in the UK in like ‘87? Eat The Rich had Paul McCartney, Lemmy, Miranda Richardson, Nigel Planer, Koo Stark, Bill Wyman and Lemmy in a restaurant called “Bastards”!

  • disqusdrew-av says:

So if you order via DoorDash, does the murder come to you?

  • rigbyriordan-av says:

So, is this a class war movie?

  • returning-the-screw-av says:

“How the customers find out about the restaurant when presumably fewer people come back than arrive on the island is anyone’s guess.”

    That statement is inherently dumb.

  • nilus-av says:

“What does mass murder do to a place’s Yelp rating?”If I were to guess. My bet is that they hunt the folks but maybe a few “winners” are allowed to leave and they do not say anything about the bad stuff that happens because the “twist” is, of course, that they are eating people. The bigger reveal is that human meat taste so damn good that you will be okay with not telling anyone about the whole “hunting people on an island” thing in order to get to taste it again. Also calling that Nicholas Holt has already been to the Island before and knows the rules and that’s why he clearly bought his unhappy girlfriend along.

  • thirdamendmentman-av says:

I feel like this movie is going to have one of 2 endings:1) Hoult ultimately kills (or allows Fiennes to kill) ATJ and becomes another chef under Fiennes. ATJ is ultimately served as a course for the next round of customers.2) ATJ ultimately kills Fiennes but takes over as the head chef.

  • BrooksSeveer-av says:

The screenplay was on 2019’s Blacklist and I gotta say, it’s pretty freaking great. Ralph Fienne’s is impeccable casting for that character. Not sure I’ll see it, as I’m not a fan of gore (I’m much better reading it) but this is a pretty entertaining and interesting horror film. Looks beautiful too.

  • akabrownbear-av says:

Knowing nothing about this movie other than what’s in this trailer, I predict it ends with ATJ eating Hoult’s organs or something like that.

  • erictan04-av says:

Anya Taylor-Joy was also in The Northman and of course Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, without doubt her most memorable role so far.
