Nicolas Cage and Ari Aster to make dreams come true with upcoming A24 movie

Dream Scenario is what we call an A24 movie starring Nicolas Cage

For many people, A24 is probably the only movie studio worth stanning. And with good reason. Despite the influx of merch and hype surrounding the studio and its release, they consistently put out interesting and occasionally brilliant films, often the types that film fans bemoan “never get made anymore.” Sure, we could reduce this to complaints about the studio’s misleading trailers, but even that isn’t totally fair to A24's fascinating and diverse track record. All of this is to say, Nicolas Cage is going to be in an A24 movie, and that should make some people very happy.

The aptly titled Dream Scenario will star Cage, so get your neon-tinged graphic tees ready, zoomers. If that wasn’t enough, Hereditary and Midsommar auteur Ari Aster will produce the film. He’s currently off directing the upcoming Disappointment Boulevard, which we hope isn’t aptly titled.

Kristoffer Borgli will write and direct the movie. Dream Scenario marks Borgli’s second feature-length picture, with his first, Sick Of Myself (also hoping that’s not an apt title), premiering this year. Based on the images in the trailer, which does not have English subtitles, it features the same disturbing body horror and cruel satire that Aster is known for. Of course, Dream Scenario is also a comedy, but we can’t imagine it’s the fun “haha” kind (more of the “hmmm…scary” kind).

Cage has a full dance card this year. Coming off the meta-comedy The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent, he’s finally treading into the Dark Universe, playing the world’s most famous and impersonated vampire, Count Dracula, in Renfield. We hope that one is an apt title because if Renfield isn’t in that movie, we’re just going to lose it.

Stop trying to make the Dark Universe happen. It’s not going to happen.

I walked into a room when The Mummy was playing a few years ago, and I assumed it was a cheapo action movie with a leading man who looked kind of like Tom Cruise. Then the real Russel Crowe showed up, and everything fell into place: Universal actually made a Mummy movie about a sexy mummy, there’s actually a cameo by Dr Jekyll in a scene that knocks off the Hulk chase in the Avengers, and Tom Cruise actually had plastic surgery to look like a Tom Cruise lookalike (kind of like the main character from Phoenix). It was a staggering moment.

worth stanning. And with good reason —> worth stanning, and with good reasonthe studio and its release —> the studio and its releases (??)often the types —> often the typeAll of this is to say, Nicolas Cage —> All of this is to say Nicolas Cageaptly titled —> aptly-titled (2 instances)Of course, Dream Scenario is also a comedy —> Of course Dream Scenario is also a comedy

I think their use of commas is debatable rather than definitively wrong.

      • volunteerproofreader-av says:

Sure, but in light of how lazy the rest of it is I can’t help but include them. There’s no way this dude actually consciously decides where and how to use punctuation. I’m pretty sure he only put a comma in “All of this is to say, Nicolas Cage is going to be in an A24 movie” because that’s where you might pause for a second if you were saying it out loud, which is balls-ass wrong

    • peon21-av says:

I think the “Of course, Dream Scenario” comma is justifiable. It changes the clause from being a declaration of how obvious it is that Dream Scenario is a comedy, into a “That being said…” juxtaposition with the previous sentence.Of course, you’re still doing God’s work, so keep at it.

I’m not saying producers have *no* influence on a film’s aesthetics or content, but this film isn’t written or directed by Aster.

To answer your last question, Nicholas Hoult is playing Renfield. Although for all you Dracula Daily readers, the film is about the popular conception of Renfield (set in the modern day) rather than Stoker’s middle-aged Victorian asylum inmate who is persuaded by Dracula’s offer of rats to eat. This is actually one of two different Dracula films scheduled to come out in 2023, with The Last Voyage of the Demeter focusing on just that one section of the book which usually gets only a small amount of screentime.

    • mifrochi-av says:

The Demeter segment tends to be a highlight of Dracula adaptations – the crates full of rates in Nosferatu, finding Renfield in the hold in the 1931 version, crazy editing and buckets of blood in the Coppola version. Even the wackadoodle BBC/Netflix adaptation turned the Demeter episode into a fun mystery.

Worth noting: per IMDB Kristoffer Borgli had a feature-length film prior to Sick of Myself titled “Drib”, whose description is “The inside story of an energy drink marketing ploy gone wrong.” In case Sick of Myself’s language barrier makes the trailer difficult to understand, its description is “Signe
and Thomas are in an unhealthy, competitive relationship that takes a
vicious turn when Thomas suddenly breaks through as a contemporary
artist. In response, Signe makes a desperate attempt to regain her
status by creating a new persona hell-bent on attracting attention and
    sympathy.”

When you write “whose description is” you mean “Which is described as”, since a film is not a person.

“What do you want to wear to SXSW, Nic?”
“How about the double breasted Black Stewart Tartan tux” “This one?”“No, the one with the shawl collar.”

  • dwarfandpliers-av says:

Nic Cage as DRACULA? Holy fucking shit how have I not heard about this??? When can I buy my ticket?? LOLI just hope the production designers buy extra scenery because that shit is gonna get chewed to pieces with sharp pointy fangs, NOMNOMNOMNOM LOL
