No, Taika Waititi is not directing Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, so stop asking

Aux Features Newswire

Ever since Disney fired James Gunn from Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 after some old, problematic tweets resurfaced last summer, the media mega-corporation has been scrambling to find a director to replace him, even putting the production on hold until they find someone. A number of names have been tossed around as potential replacements—like Vice director Adam McKay, who was approached by Marvel in December, or Jon Favreau, who kickstarted the MCU with the first two Iron Man movies.

But the fan favorite choice for the gig seems to be Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, who brought comedy, splashy visuals, and critical acclaim to the Thor franchise. But unfortunately for those fans, Waititi isn’t looking to step into James Gunn’s shoes any time soon. When asked about directing Guardians 3 at a TCA panel for What We Do in the Shadows, Waititi had this to say:

For me, those are James’ films. Going into something like that with his stamp all over his films, would be like going into someone’s house and saying ‘Hey, I’m your new dad, and this is how we make peanut butter sandwiches now.’ It feels kind of awkward.

Fans who want to see Waititi direct another Marvel movie can rest easy, though. The director made it clear that he still wants to do another movie with Marvel, and assures us that he and Marvel are currently “talking about new stuff.”

At this point they should probably just cancel it. Maybe have some of the characters pop up in other movies at most.

Probably the best option at this point, other than getting Gunn to ghost direct it with his twin brother that is.

I’m fine without any more GotG movies. If he wants to do more Marvel films there are so many he could do well, from Ms Marvel to Silver Surfer or even the FF. Especially the FF. Maybe even Remender’s X-Force. If he’s not doing any more Thor, I’d love to see him on Eternals but IIRC there’s already a director on that. Maybe some kind of God-squad introducing Herc and Cho. Plenty of stuff he could do an amazing job with.Still, now that I think of it, Fantastic Four. He’d get to play with all that Kirby greatness… the Negative Zone, Annihilus, and who could do better with Galactus than him? Plus he is so able to do authenticity and heart. Who better to direct Ben Grimm, Johnny Storm, Franklin and Valeria and eventually the Future Foundation? At the same time I hope to see some more smaller, personal fare in the vein of Hunt for the Wilderpeople. I’m grateful for the new What We Do in the Shadows.RIP, Guardians. Taika on Fantastic Four.

I think Jojo Rabbit is going to be smaller, personal fare so I don’t think he’s going all in on the big movies and only big movies front. He seems to mostly be alternating.

As much as Taika would nail the Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer and Galactus, I think they’re still off the table rights-wise.I can’t think of a new name I’d want to pull into the MCU for Taika to handle, largely because I’m not super aware of the Marvel universe enough to think of one (he might have some fun with Moon Knight I guess?), but throw him at Doctor Strange 2 and we’re golden in my book, that’s perfect.

      • fozberry13-av says:

A Taika FF movie is the movie I didn’t know I needed until now. He’d be a really great choice to bring them home to the MCU.

Also now it occurs to me, who better to add some color to the First Family of Marvel, whether Wyatt Wingfoot or other classic  characters represented more diversely?

    • b1gdon5-av says:

In what world do you not make a movie that will gross $700M just on pure momentum alone? This movie is going to be made.  I just hope they find someone that can do it right and not make a shity movie.

I think you mean “problematic” tweets, not problematic tweets.

  • lmh325-av says:

Also, as much as I’m looking forward to Jojo Rabbit, I can’t imagine having a guy who is literally playing Hitler in a comedy satire would keep those who brought down James Gunn from getting riled up again. I’m actually surprised that hasn’t been freaking Disney/Marvel out already.

I get it.  Phillip always tried to make me eat peanut butter sandwiches on marble rye.  Marble rye is gross, and you aren’t my real dad, Phil-Up!

when my step-son says i’m not his real dad i point out that his real dad and i are pretty similar because neither of us love him.

The level of drama and desperation this whole debacle seems to invoke is exhausting.  A part of me wants Disney to make this right and hire back Gunn, but another part of me wants them to respond to the folks who are screaming in desperation at them like they murdered a baby by coaxing Uwe Boll out of retirement.

Honestly let’s just start making more Marvel cosmic movies and have the Guardians show up in them from time to time. Give us an Adam Warlock movie. Or Silver Surfer(assuming we get a F4 movie first.  Or a Beta Ray bill spin-off(after he shows up in the next Thor because he has to at this point).

    • lmh325-av says:

Allegedly from past discussions, it is believed they are going more Cosmic. Given Adam Warlock was supposed in the Guardians 3 script, it would follow to have him become a “spin off” instead and have anyone who is still game pop up without being the main focus (a bit like Tony Stark in Spiderman). I think Silver Surfer and F4 will be a ways out just because of the logistics of the merger.

      • nilus-av says:

I thought that as well regarding the Fantastic Four but from what I understood the Skrull were part of that licensing deal and we are finally seeing them in Captain Marvel.

        • lmh325-av says:

That could be. I’m honestly not sure. Narratively, I definitely think it makes the most sense for the X-Men to come in whenever Captain Marvel is being retired because of the Rogue – Carol Danvers connection.

        • velvetal-av says:

Fox and Marvel had joint custody of the film rights to the Skrulls. Marvel was allowed to use the Skrull race but couldn’t use any specific Skrulls from the comics, like Super Skrull, as they were exclusive to Fox. After Googling this to fact check myself, I found out that the Watchers were subject to the same deal. Marvel could use the race of Watchers but not Uatu specifically.

Just put GotG and Thor together. Or atleast Rocket and Groot on a roadtrip with Thor and Valkyrie.

  • warroko-av says:

I really liked Guardians of the Galaxy, and will be sad if there is no GOTG3. I think Taika would be excellent at taking over the GOTG3 franchise, but I think he walks in his own shoes, not others. I do wish they would bring Gunn back.

  • gdtesp-av says:

Let me know how Kenneth Branagh feels about that sandwich nonsense.

Where’s the big red NO? There was supposed to be a big red NO…

  • bigbks-av says:

This dude already made GotG 3, it’s just that he called it Thor: Ragnarok. Still waiting on the actual Thor sequel I was hoping for.

  • mfdixon-av says:

Here’s a great idea…. hire James Gunn back and admit you cowered to right wing trolls, Disney. It’s the just thing to do.

Bob Iger is a disgrace to Jews everywhere, and should be forced to eat nothing but plain matzoh and bitter herbs for the next several months.

He would make Howard the Duck great again!

  • sandywedge-av says:

Disney hiring a Troma guy always felt like it was going to end badly. It’s sad what happened but (tweets or no) Gunn as a Disney guy always seemed like it had a limited shelf life.

To be honest the GotG3 Taika Waititi crowd struck me as the same people who bring up Idris Elba any time a black British actor needs casting.
We get it, the only comedic directors you know are Wes Anderson, Edgar Wright, James Gunn, Taika Waititi, and Paul Feig.

.. You want an over-the-top space adventure, and to demonstrate you do not kow-tow to the radical right? Well, the Wachowski siblings are not currently buzy…

  • halloweenjack-av says:

Let’s just be clear here: Taika Waititi has permission to be my new dad.

Between thinking about how Drax called Gamora a whore for no reason and reading stuff like this http://msenscene.com/2017/08/19/need-talk-mantis-abuse-guardians-galaxy-2/I am pretty ok with no more James Gunn Guardians movies.
